o Explain- Then I will explain that being a leader is important even if you aren’t famous.

o Discuss- As a class we will discuss some famous leaders we have heard of and why they are considered a leader. As a class we will compile a list of these important leaders.

2. Next the students will be instructed to take out their graph paper and write down the traits of a leader. They will use this as a reference for the rest of the lesson.

3. Then I will have each student choose a leader they want to learn more about from the list of leaders we created previously. Then I will put the students who chose the same leader into small groups.

4. The students will then be instructed to use the Internet and books from the library to research the particular leader they picked. As they research their leader they will fill out their answers on the graphic organizer.

5. After the groups finish their research and graphic organizers they will have one person from each group share about the leader they picked.

E. CLOSURE: I will then close with explaining that all different kinds of people can be leaders. I will also explain that it is important for all of us to try to be the best leader we can be. Sometimes being a leader means doing the right thing even when others aren’t.

F. Assessment: What will you use to measure student understanding?

I will measure students understanding by their completed graphic organizer and presentation.

I will also evaluate the students’ answers in the whole group discussion.

Explain how you will know students understand the concepts from the lesson.

I will know whether students understood the concepts of the lesson by listening to their answers to questions about the concept and by their completed graphic organizers.

Reflection:

1. Which part of the lesson do you think will be the easiest for you to teach?

I think the easiest part of the lesson will be discussing famous leaders and the characteristics that make a leader.

2. Which part will be most challenging for you to teach?

I think the most challenging part will be teaching the students how to find information on the leader they choose. I think it might be a little challenging since they are only in the 1st grade.

2. How will you follow up or extend this lesson?I will extend this lesson by having the students write a few sentences about a leader in their own lives. They will explain who the leader is and why they think that person is a leader.

3. What will you do for students who don’t grasp the concepts?

For the students who don’t grasp the concepts I will spend more time working with them one on one. I will also try to pair them with students who better understand the concepts.

4. Which part of the lesson, if any, do you think might need to change?I may need to change the research portion of the lesson and make it easier. I could give them fact sheets about the particular leader they chose and let them choose the facts to write on their graphic organizers.

6.When you were writing this lesson plan, what was the most difficult part?

The most difficult part of writing this lesson was figuring out what the students will be capable of completing.
