    MILLER THOMSON LLP

IS PROUD TO SPONSOR THE 2013 - 2014

SEASON OF THE FC EDMONTON SOCCER CLUB

A Note fromFree Footie Manager Tim Adams

Sometimes its about more than the game

I must admit that when I went to the seasonopener at Clarke Stadium on April 28th, mymain concern was would we have a good show-ing. Coming on the heels of the highly con-troversial home leg of the Amway CanadianChampionship game against Vancouver, I was

very concerned about how the Eddies wouldperform against a hungry San Antonio team.As I settled into my seats, I acquainted my-

self with those around me, as a season-ticketholder, these will be my Sunday neighbours f orthe next few months. In the row in front of me

was a wonderful family with four young girls. As the game progressed, I realized that thiswas not simply a case of the parents bringingthe kids to a game, but rather the four youngladies seemed to have a strong understandingof the game.

Having experienced the game in many roles

as a player, a referee, a coach and a leagueadministrator I provided insight for these level. I must admit their attentiveness to whatI had to say caught me by surprise, but waspleasantly refreshing.

Just prior to halftime, the Eddies hard workand pressure was rewarded with a penaltykick, which Shaun Saiko placed perfectly forthe goal, must to the joy and satisfaction of all.

I have to admit that I paid only casual at-tention to the second half of play as my newfriends had now become the focus of the after-noon. Their questions about the game, as well started to overtake the action that was takingplace below us.

The second half featured some close calls, al-ways rescue d by Lance Parker and company, and a near fatal incident that was, thankfully, -

ments ticked away, my attention was drawn -lief as our beloved Eddies captured win num-

    ber one on the season.

neighbours I had just met, would now be head-ing to their home, and I to mine. Having theopportunity to spend my afternoon with such a

wonderful bunch of fans was enjoyable, and itprobably kept me from getting too vocal abouthome, I noticed that I was very much refreshedfrom that chilly afternoon at Clarke Stadium, and I know its because of the wonderful neigh-

bours I had that afternoon.Thank you Eddies, for a wonderful game and

a great result; and thank you to my fellow fanswho make the experie nce just that much bet-ter.

Free Footie is an after school soccer league inEdmonton. The league is totally free a nd primarily

for kids who may not otherwise have the opportu-nity to play. It is 100 per cent volunteer run withthe goal of ensuring every kid has a blast!!A BIG THANK YOU!!!!Wow, what a great start to our year thanks to our

sponsors!!!Reach Edmonton is back again. This season theyve helped Free Footie access a

major grant from the City of Edmonton and theAlberta Government.

tournament last year, is back again in an even big-ger way.

Dan Brazinha, president of Look Master Builder, wrote a cheque for $10,000.

FC Edmonton is here this season as well. Thisyear instead of donating time and merchandise toour Kick in For Kids equipment drive, members

will be volunteering their time to help refereesome of the games and mentor the kids.As well, we once again welcome the Edmonton

and District Soccer Referees Association. Theirwonderful members give up paying games andvolunteer their time to do the bulk of the referee-ing. They do a fantastic job of not just teaching therules of the game, but also providing guidance tothe kids and coaches and ensuring everyone has

    fun.NEW SPONSORS!!!

We also welcome some new sponsors this year. The Edmonton Civic Employees Charitable As-sistance Fund is giving Free Footie the largestdonation weve ever received!!! This donation isensuring the sustainability of the league. It putsus in a position where we can really start focus-ing on programming rather than running aroundtrying to beg and borrow money from family andfriends, which has historically been my fundrais-ing method.

This year we also gladly welcome Jonathan sponsor. His support will allow us to make somecapital purchases of goals and nets to ensure the

    year end tournament goes smoothly.

MEANS A LOTYou should know it hasnt been easy for these

sponsors to give Free Footie money. There havebeen all kinds of complications on my end in termsof receiving the money.

I want everyone to truly appreciate that each ofthese kind folks stuck by Free Footie to make sure

we could get everything the kids and volunteercoaches need to make this season happen.

    Thank You,Tim

A Salute to the Soccer MOm

    Chris Nurse

    Shaun and Mom

    Antonio and Mom

    Lance and Mom

Behind every great soccer player, there are people in their lives that have shown true dedication and sup-port. With every aspiring Lionel Messi, there is a mother who has given up weekend sleep-ins, lazy afternoons

and quite nights to make sure that their child has the support they deserve from the sidelines. All of this and more is true for FC Edmonton players. To have made it to the professional level - their moth-ers have been one of their biggest supporters and cheerleaders, pushing them to the peak of their profession. We asked some of FC Edmontons leading players just how important their moms are to them.

    Lance Parker

A: My mothers a great woman. She has lived in OklahomaCity almost her entire life. When she was younger, she was a great dancer - a ballerina

    - and was still dancing when I was born. After that, she took-sional action and sports photographer and has been for about

    10 years.

mother helped you towards one or both of these careers?

A: Shes been extremely supportive with whatever Ivewanted to do. With soccer, she was supportive of me quittingother sports and helping me focus on soccer, because it was

what I wanted to do. With mode ling, she was also there and

been really supportive of whatever I do.

A: Im not much of a homebody - but its always refreshingto see her when I can. Shes been able to catch a few of ourgames in the States and even was able to travel up to Edmon-ton for a few. She was a huge life saver when I broke my armthankful that she stayed and for all her help.

A: For sure. She watches every game and cheers me on. Shealways calls and texts me before and after every match.

    Shaun Saiko

A: My mom played for the Canadian Womens NationalTeam way back in the day. People have told me she was the

best player in Canada - she came from a family where her par-ents both played. My aunt also played on the National Teamand went on to play in a World Cup. My mom never made itto the World Cup because she decided to have a family - andto be honest, I dont think she would have ever changed thatdecision.

    skills from your mom?

A: I think I got some of my skills from my dad - he was apretty good soccer player back in his day. Obviously my momwas a great player, but she was a little softer on me and neverreally pushed me to play.

A: Endless days of her driving me around - going fromschool and driving me to one club and then to a game andthen to another practice after. A lot of credit goes to my momand Im so grateful for all that she did.

A: It was tough. If you ask her, she may have gone insanewhen I left - Im a little bit of a mammas boy... She wasntexcited to see me leave, but shes been the most excited to seeme on the way to my profession. Shes happy Im home rightnow and I never leave for very long.

    Chris Nurse

A: Yeah - everyone has a soft spot for their mom, Im noexception. My parents divorced when I was young and I spenta lot of my childhood with her. Some might even call me amammas boy.

    were younger?

A: My mom was very strict on me when it came to football

was me not being allowed to play over the weekend. I alwaystried to keep myself in check so that Id be able to play. Mymom was also a hard worker - doing shift work and raisingall of us kids so it was hard for her to come out to every gamethat I played. But when she had the chance, she was there andcheering me on. It meant a lot to me, thats for sure.

sort of motivation has that been for you as a professional

    soccer player?

A: My mom passed away nine years ago from breast can-cer. She was a big motivation for me to be a professional soc-cer player - because when I was younger she would also telleveryone that Id become a professional soccer player. Whenshe passed, I took it as my responsibility to live up to herdreams for me.

Q: What sort of role does your family play in your career?

A: I always think of my mom when I play - its always beenfor my family and to be a positive role model for the rest ofmy family.

    Antonio Rago

    soccer?

A: Shes was always there - as a kid she drove me around toall my games. I have three brothers so I dont know how shedid it, driving all of us around, but she did! I remember my-ings, usually at 7am. In the winter when it was dark and cold, she was always there to drive me. We lost every single game,

but that didnt matter and she drove me every weekend.

A: She comes to every home game and watches all the awaygames online.

    you and your soccer aspirations?

A: Growing up, I left home when I was 14. She was alwaysstrong and encouraged me to go after my dreams. I remembershe came to Italy when I was there - and I remember her leav-ing and that was hard for me especially.

all the soccer Moms out there a happy Mothers Day!

keeping them in touch with the leading pack.Weve played better this season and lost, said coach

Colin Miller. Theres such character in the team andIm proud of them. Weve created some good chancestoday but not as many as Id like. Im just pleased thatlady luck gave us a couple of breaks today.

If we continue to play with the same attitude theresso many positives, but I still expect more. The guys performance a little bit. But were delighted with thethree points today.sent the ball in that Scorpions keeper Pat Hannigan

The Scorpions had the next clear chance in the 24thminute when a streaking attack from defender Luka

Vucko saw him send in a dangerous ball that left Ed-dies goalkeeper Lance Parker stranded at the far post,

but there was no San Antonio forward on hand totouch the ball into the back of the net.

injury time when FCE defender Eddie Edward made

brought down in the box. Saiko stepped up to take thespot kick and sent Hannigan the wrong way for the Ed-dies to take the lead 1-0.

Ive been playing well, so I wanted to take the penaltyand make sure we got the three points today, ex-plained Saiko. Youve just got to get the goalie going

the other way and slot it to the other side.

and out of the home box to clear a ball, but was left inno mans land. The Eddies backline was able to coverfor the wayward keeper and preserve their lead as theScorpions pressed.

struck the ball from 30 yards out but Rowdieskeeper Diego Restrepo came up big to make the

save. Both sides looked dangerous the rest of the

half with the Eddies putting on most of the pres-sure in the last 15 minutes. Both teams had theirchances but neither was able to capitalize.
