Why Diversity in Education

• Understand issues that deal with diversity• Relate culture to classroom management,

classroom climate, and learning• Understand minority issues in the educational

system• Become a better teacher and effective

educator

Multicultural Education

• Education that is all inclusive• Looks at concepts from more than one

perspective• ME is: antiracist, basic education, important

for all students, pervasive, education for social justice, a process, critical pedagogy(Nieto& Bode pg. 42)

Social Justice

• Having a fair say, encouraging everyone to participate democratically in decision making

White privilege and Poverty

• Status that Whites have because of race• White culture norms considered to be the norm• Invisible to those who enjoy it and often makes

them oppressive• Reinforces theory of meritocracy• Unfair distribution of resources in the

educational system

• Patient Hope, Critical Hope, Sound Hope, Resolute Hope, and Transformative Hope

• Many injustices have been addressed but there are yet many more to be dealt with
