EDA bases its actions on science

The dairy sector has proved that milk and dairy are

    nutrient-rich and contain highly bioavailable

essential nutrients. Reducing their intake could lead

to poor nutritional status: a negative impact on health.

In the midst of the debates over the environmental

impact of dairy, EDA has been working on a Nutrition

& Sustainability Fact Sheet on ‘Nutrient Density and

Carbon Foot Print’ including 3 studies . An update

with the very latest science is already in preparation:

    please stay tuned.

    EDA’s nutrition and sustainability factsheets

    are available online.

Annual EDA door knock in Washington

As in former years, an EDA delegation visited Washington this week. They met, with the delegation of the

European Commission, agricultural attachés of several EU Member States, the main dairy farmers’ organisation

(NMPF), the US Dairy Export Council (USDEC), USDA, USTR, FDA and representatives of the AGRI and Trade

committees in the House and Senate. Just a couple of days after the 13th round of TTIP negotiations, the EU –

U.S. free trade agreement was of course high on the agenda, but the EDA delegation stressed that while

supporting the conclusion of the negotiations, the top priority is to get – within or outside the FTA – an agreement

on equivalence to address both Grade A and the challenges of the implementation of the Food Safety

Modernisation Act (FSMA). EDA also stressed once more that EU28 is and must be considered as a single entity,

with all member states complying with the same EU food safety legislation and implementing it the same way.

This visit also gave the opportunity to discuss inter alia the dairy Margin Protection Program, the additional

import duties on butter and cream triggered last year, the Dairy Import Assessment, milk substitutes, whey

and milk permeate Codex standards, the two major issues for the US dairy industry being equivalence and GIs.

Free Trade Agreement EU – Australia

At a lunch meeting in the residence of Australian

ambassador H.E. Dr Mark Higgie in Brussels, the

Australian minister for trade and investment, MP

Steven Ciobo underlined the openness of Australia

for foreign investments and the ‘fairness- approach’

when it comes to FTAs. “Free Trade Agreements

(FTAs) must create win-win situations and an EU –

Australia FTA would help the EU gain market access

in parts of the world, where you don’t have yet easy

    access”.

Mercosur trade deal: What impact on EU

    agriculture?

Various agrifood stakeholders gathered on 2nd May

at the European Parliament to debate on the

potential impact of an EU-Mercosur trade deal on EU

agriculture. Six years ago, back when the

    negotiations with Mercosur were officially

relaunched, the Commission's trade department had

stated that on a general basis, an EU-Mercosur trade

deal “would deliver net economic benefits worth about

€4.5 billion a year to both regions” (Source: EurActiv).

Yesterday’s event highlighted that it would indeed

be a real opportunity for the dairy industry to

grow further, given for instance the continual

increase of the consumers’ demand in the dairy

sector, especially in Brazil and Argentina.
