Father’s Focus

The relationship between stewardship and fundraising has a rich history of dialogue in the diocese of Wichita. The Stewardship Way of Life has simplified one’s ordinary giving primarily to the act of tithing at a Sunday Mass. However, parishes throughout the diocese have instituted various fundraising activities for various reasons and some people have inquired about these activities at SFA. In my “Weights and Measures” pas-toral address I discussed a future dialogue concerning this topic.

So on Thursday, March 1st, from 7:00pm – 8:30pm, in the basement of Clare Hall, I will be hosting an open forum dialogue entitled “The Relationship of Stewardship to Fundraising at SFA.” It will begin with a presentation on the “do’s and don’ts of fund-raising” as presented by the diocese of Wichita as well as special considerations of fund-raising’s relationship to Stewardship. The evening will help inform people of the various positives and negatives of fundraising at SFA and to think through the pitfalls and bene-fits of such events. This conversation is not concerned with smaller events such as those hosted by various youth groups or Knights of Columbus. I will then use the fruit of this conversation to pastorally discern the appropriateness of such efforts at SFA.

The five parish councils have been asked to offer their input on this topic by filling out a survey. The four questions asked of the councils are:

Do you think St. Francis should create a large event for the primary purpose of raising money?

Do you think such an event conflicts with the Stewardship Way of Life?

Do you think such an event would be acceptable if all funds raised would go to charities and not to parish operational expenses?

How can we communicate to parishioners that funds raised by such an event would be considered “extraordinary” gifts given in addition to, not in place of, ordinary gifts (e.g. tithe)? This survey was only given to the members of our councils; but it will help prepare

the discussion for March 1st.

All members of the parish are welcome to attend this presentation and join the dialogue. Rev. C. Jarrod Lies

Parents in forming their children to become

a chastity retreat, will be held at St. Francis of Assisi Parish on Saturday, March 24th from 8:00am-3:00pm. While at Project Freedom youth will learn more about the virtue of chastity,

deepen his/her relationship with Christ through the sacraments, participate in games and skits, and hear testimonies from the Project Freedom retreat team!

Project Freedom is unique in that a parent retreat will be offered at the same time as the student program and parents will hear from a parent who has dealt with the struggles of

living chastity within their marriage, raising chaste teens and will provide parents with resources to face these

challenges. If it all possible, it is highly recommended that both you and your spouse attend the parent retreat.

For more information or to register for Project Freedom please contact Emily Savage by calling 722-4404 or by

PRAYER AND ACTION

Prayer and Action sign up is underway! This year we will be serving in Schulte, KS the weeks of June 10-15 and June 24-29. Prayer and Action is a weeklong mission trip in the Wichi-ta Diocese. The mission trip/retreat begins Sunday evening and concludes Friday afternoon. A mission team of seminari-ans and other dynamic young adults facilitate each Prayer & Action week. This team and the parish adult leaders will be with the students at the worksites, working side-by-side with them to paint, clean, do yard work, and other tasks for those in need. In the evenings, the team will lead Collatio, the re-treat portion of Prayer & Action. Collatio is perhaps the most important part of the day as the students pray, worship, and grow together in Jesus Christ. If you are interested in attend-ing Prayer and Action this summer space is limited so please email [email protected] or call Emily at

722-4404. Cost is $60.
