The Foundation of Tomorrow Is Built Today By Patricia Miller

D O you remember who first inspired your interest in technology for learning? A parent? A friend? A teacher? An AECT mentor? What did they encourage you to do? Why? What did they value? What was their passion?

It has been said that in our culture most of what we hold closest to our hearts will be lost after only three generations. Considering the rapid rate of change in our ed tech world, today's technology for learning may well be an endangered species. But the people and the causes that we have held dear and that have influenced us along the way need not be. One way to remember how we got where we are (or for that matter, how AECT got where it is) is to invest in the preservation of what we value while we embrace the changes which are inevitable. That's what the ECT Foundation endowment campaign is all about.

An endowment fund is designed for permanence. That's why the building metaphor that the ECT Foundation has chosen for the Capital Campaign is so appropriate. The endowment is a fund invested to accrue earnings which support the good works of its parent organization. The fund is managed and protected by the board of the organization, in this case the ECT Foundation Board of Trustees.

Your $100 contribution at today's rate of return on investment would double in seven years, and in twenty years would grow to more than $650! Leaving half to the principal in the fund, your contribution might be used for a scholarship so that a future AECT leader might attend the AECT convention.

The ECT Foundation Board is attempting through the Capital Campaign to build the endowment, to protect the principal while growing the earnings, thus establishing a legacy for future professionals in our field. When you contribute to the campaign, you are investing in the future of our profession while honoring those who have helped you along the way. And you will know that your generosity in 2005 will continue to contribute to the future of our field for generations to come.
