It has proven to be a very effective treatment for many patients. Our ECT program includes an initial evaluation by board certified psychiatrists with specialized training in ECT. We take a multidisciplinary approach, and have an anesthesiologist evaluating all patients and monitoring all treatments, as well as nursing assessments and interventions. ECT is provided in a safe, secure, and monitored environment. There are both inpatient and outpatient treatment options, with patients monitored in a post- procedure recovery room. The frequency and duration of treatments is determined collaboratively between the ECT team and treating psychiatrists based on the patient’s symptoms and input. TMS Transmagnetic stimulation (TMS) is another effective therapy; this treatment will be available at the 1130 South Avenue location. Richmond University Medical Center will be the first hospital offering this therapy on Staten Island.

ECTIf you or someone you know is suicidal and not responding to medication or cannot tolerate the side effects of medication; or is suffering from severe mental illness such as depression and bipolar disorder, especially if accompanied by psychosis, then electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) may be an effective treatment for you.

There are both inpatient and

outpatient treatment options, with patients monitored in a post-procedure recovery room.

The frequency and duration of treatments is determined collaboratively between the ECT team and treating psychiatrists based on the patient’s symptoms and input.
