Dear LINC students,

Welcome to the first month of CLB 4 evening classes here at One World One Centre in Edmonton! I hope you have a pleasant time learning English and making new friends this year. Please, follow the school policies and procedures, especially the attendance rules. The part-time evening LINC program runs from Sept. 7th, 2016 to Jun. 22nd, 2017. This September and October we are focusing on the Education theme.

Last year OWOC installed an electronic key entry to get into the school building. Here is what you must do to enter the school building in the evening. Firstly, you must remember the 4 digit code that the teacher gives each student. Secondly, you must type the 4 numbers into the keypad at the side of the east entrance door. Next, when the red light on the keypad turns green, you can open the door and enter the building. Finally, it is important that you do NOT give the code to anyone who is NOT a student at OWOC. Also, in the winter when it is cold, the keys on the keypad might stick. If this happens, please, type in the numbers slowly, so the keypad will work.

All the best,

Teacher Wiktor

An Interview with The Teacher LISTENING TRANSCRIPT

The parent of a young girl discovers she is having problems at school with Math. Listen as she discusses this with her teacher.

Mr. Moser: Miss Pitre, it is nice to meet you. How are you this morning?

Daniel: I am good. Thanks. Please call me Daniel. How are you?

Mr. Moser: I am good. Thank you.

Daniel: I have to say I am quite worried. You’ve never asked me to come to an interview before. Is anything wrong with my daughter, Tara?

Mr. Moser: Well, there is something that concerns both of us. She is facing problems in Math.

Daniel: Is it about her grades? I noticed on the last report card that she’s doing well in reading and writing but she’s slipping in Math.

Mr. Moser: Yes, you’re absolutely right Daniel. Tara is having problems with Math. Overall, she’s an excellent student. She’s a hard worker and she applies herself to her tasks. She excels in reading and writing and she’s very well-liked by her classmates.

Daniel: Why is she having problems with Math?

Mr. Moser: I’m not sure, but lately I see that she can’t keep up with her Math assignments. Yesterday, when I asked why she couldn’t do Math assignment she said she can’t understand some equations.

Daniel: Yes. She works mostly on science and avoids Math.

Mr. Moser: She’s struggling with basic multiplication and divisions. She has problems multiplying small digits.

Daniel: What can we do to help her? My Math is also not good.

Mr. Moser: I think she needs little more practice and extra coaching for Math. But before we decide anything I want her to be tested by our expert, Mr. Taylor. And I have asked our principal, Mr. Murawsky, to tell you more about it. He is waiting to speak with you.

Daniel: Mr. Moser, thank you. We appreciate that you gave us this information and I will go see the principal now.

Mr. Moser: Not at all, thank you for coming in.

September 16, 2016

Dear Parent(s)/Guardian(s),

I am your child’s 6th grade teacher, and I am delighted to have your child in my class this year. My name

is Ms. Krystle Selbee. I am looking forward to a very successful year for your child.

I have 11 years of teaching experience. You can help your child especially in math and reading. I expect

all math assignments to be completed in class. If your child does not complete math assignments in

class, he or she has to complete them at home. I suggest you to ask your child everyday about math

assignment. If it is not done, please help him to finish it.

I am going to work on reading. Your child has to read at least one story book with pictures in two weeks.

He or she has to write a book review after reading it. I want you to ask your child once in two weeks

about reading and book review. If it is not done, please help your child to write a book review. Please

check this link if you wish to know the rules to write a book review. The link is

http://www.readwritethink.org/parent-afterschool-resources/tips-howtos/help child-write-book-

30292.html.

Please help your child buy the following materials for class: pencils, eraser, binder, notebook, glue and

ruler. The binder of each subject has two parts, class work and homework. It will help you to check your

child’s class work and home work. The section Class work will give you the outline of my work and topics

covered in classroom.

Please feel free to contact me at 780 782 0541 ext. 576 or by email [email protected] if you have any

questions or concerns during the year. I am available to talk with you between 3.30 p.m. to 4.00 p.m.

Sincerely,

Ms. Krystle Selbee
