LED vs. Fluorescent High Bay

Wattage: Immediate reduction in wattage from 240W w/ballast for the fluorescent to about 120W or 150W with the LED fixtures. An Energy Savings of 50% when compared to fluorescents and up to 80% when compared to metal halides and High Intensity Discharge.

Rated Life Hours: 2 to 7 x longer life with LEDs vs. fluorescent fixtures.

Heat Generated: LED fixtures will operate much cooler than fluorescent fixtures thus reducing the Electrical costs for HVAC units to cool the environment. The DOE studies show 40% of commercial energy costs are from HVAC.

Start-up time: LED lights are instant-on to full brightness. Fluorescent lighting may take up to 2-5 minutes to achieve full brightness (even longer in cold environments).

Mercury Content: LED lights contain no mercury or lead and are RoHS compliant. Fluorescent lights work by passing electricity through mercury vapor, which in turn emits ultraviolet light. The ultraviolet light is then absorbed by a phosphor coating inside the lamp, causing it to glow, or fluoresce. LED are easy to recycle compared to high costs of fluorescent tube disposal.

Safety Features: LED fixtures utilize a solid lightweight design with no glass or other breakable materials. Fluorescent fixtures are very fragile and require shatter protection.

Annual Energy Cost: Results above based on calculations of 0.11 kWh rate at 12 hours/day usage over 10 years. Compared to fluorescent lighting, LED fixtures will cost less than half to operate.

Maintenance: Fluorescent lighting requires service to bulbs and ballast which adds additional costs for personnel, equipment and lights/ballasts. LED fixtures require no maintenance during the life of the fixture.

Health: LED lights have ‘No’ hum, flicker or strobe which creates safer work environments. LED lights also produce visible light only with no harmful UV or Infrared Radiation like with fluorescent lights.

Color Rendering Index: LED lighting has one of the highest CRI values available from any light source. High color rendering increases the human eye perception to visible light (i.e. an Estimated 10,000 LED lumens will appear as bright as 12,000 lumens from most other light sources).

Cycling: LED are solid state electronic and are able to be turned on and off without any adverse effects to lifespan. Fluorescent lights that are not cycled on and off with proper cool down time, will decrease the lifespan of the bulbs significantly.
