The Bolivian jungle is fast becoming an ecotourism hotspot. Instead of sun, sand and

sangria, the brochures here advertise sustainable development, biodiversity and

conservation. Yet despite the growing number of tourists arriving each day, it’s international

tour operators who profit most, not the poor indigenous people who live here. In reality,

young indigenous people are being driven away by poverty, and the ancient cultures that

attract tourists are threatened by extinction. Finding ways to help indigenous people in the

Amazon basin preserve their cultures while increasing incomes has been the focus of a

unique program known as Paria, established by the UN’s International Fund for Agricultural

Development, or IFAD.

esteem or self-respect

2) What difficulty do some inhabitants in very remote areas have? It’s hard for them to

promote the products they offer (lodging and tours) because they don’t necessarily have any

good means of communication.

3) What is the aim of the network mentioned? To connect different groups or communities

and to encourage them to promote things together.

4) What is the new tool used by the indigenous people? The internet

5) What is the great advantage of this tool? It enables them to bypass the big tour operators

and to contact potential tourists directly.

6) How is the money generated by tourism used here? It is used to build schools and health

centers. The money was “much needed”.

7) What are the two other positive consequences mentioned at the end of the report?

The exodus of the indigenous populations slowed down / decreased.

Moreover, some young people develop a greater respect of their own culture as they

intereact with foreign people.(So it’s positive economically and it boosts self-esteem)
