How many people
in this room have
an Android device?
3 3
Why?
4 4
Lots of good reasons:

How many people
in this room have
an Apple device?

Why?

Thanks for that –now back to the serious stuff…
9 9
The (more) serious stuff…
There is a wide ranging agenda of topics at this conference
10 10

Maintaining Future Existence
Managing Margins
Managing Churn
Customer acquisition
11
All addressing the Challenges facing
MVNO’s today…
12 12
But a notable absence of one…
…The “Elephant in the Room”?
13 13
Especially when everything is all about Data….
14 14
….and even more Data!
15 15
…and more and more Apps!
16 16
So what is
the one thing
that is needed for
an MVNO but is
never mentioned?
17 17
HANDSETS!
18 18
….It was all about SIM cards and low cost voice calls and texts
In the early days of MVNO’s handsets did not matter so much…….
19 19
But in today's
Data Centric world
it is all about...
20 20
Smartphones!
21 21
What impact will
this have on
MVNO’s?
22 22
There is already a trend towards the removal of handset subsidies and the offering of separate finance or lease plans for handsets. Without contracts and SIM-locked phones, operators will be seen as connectivity providers only and will need to stress network quality to differentiate themselves between each other. By selling unlocked phones in a subscriber environment void of fixed-term contracts, it makes it easy to change carriers. It is expected this dilution of the subscriber relationship will result in a higher level of subscriber churn in the market, and could work to the advantage of disruptors such as MVNO’s.
Breaking the link with MNO’s ?
… and creating opportunities for the MVNO’s
23 23
Apple and Google already looking at becoming network providers…
…and providing handset finance programs
24 24
MVNO’s are having to look at their
business models:
• In the days when a “feature phone” cost $100 it did not matter as the low cost was aligned with “Cost Conscious” subscribers
25 25
MVNO’s are having to look at their
business models:
• But when faced with a price point of $300- $600 for a new smartphone to be able to access data services then low cost calling is no longer the key driver for subscribers as before
26 26
Introduce a
handset program?
How can a
MVNO compete?
27
Need a finance program to be able to offer payment by instalments
The cash strain on buying in handset stock needs deep pockets!
27
Most subscribers are predominantly “prepaid” subscribers
Outright sale at a high price point is not attractive to customer base without subsidy
How to handle complaints, warranty claims, shipping costs and as well as customer services and logistics?
OK, but the problems are:
28 28
The Solution?
29 29
• A “take back” programme that converts old phones into to air time calling credit to leverage the margin between wholesale and retail tariffs;
• A stand alone sale of a Refurbished iPhone Handset;
• A financed sale of a Refurbished iPhone Handset.

33 33
What is
“Refurbished”?
34 34
A used phone is sold “as is”. It has not been tested or fixed, and it comes with no guarantee. A refurbished phone is different in that it has been tested, repaired as necessary, and it has been cleaned. The EcoRenew definition of refurbished is returning a used Iphone to an “as new” condition.
35 35
So not just “refurbished”…
The EcoRenew policy is not just refurbishment but is more correctly called Remanufacturing. This is the rebuilding of a product to specifications of the original manufactured product using only OEM parts. It is this process that enables us to offer a no quibble 12 month warranty on every device leaving our production facilities. …but “as new”

Apple have launched a refurbishment program…
… recognising the growth in the “pre-owned” device market
