GLOBALISATION

Introduction to the Unit of Inquiry (UI)

Dear Learners,

This chapter looks at globalisation in a more limited sense. It defines globalisation as the integration

between countries through foreign trade and foreign investments by multinational corporations

(MNCs). Integration of production and integration of markets is a key idea behind understanding the

process of

globalisation and its impact. This has been dealt with at length in this chapter, highlighting the role of

MNCs in the process. Globalisation has been facilitated by three factors highlighted: rapid

improvements in technology, liberalisation of trade and investment policies and, pressures from

international organisations such as the WTO. The final section covers the impact of globalisation.

Some interesting facts

Globalization:

• New technology created the connections that propelled globalization.

Since the 19th century, we’ve built a transportation infrastructure that moved people and goods on

steamships, railroads, autos, trucks, airplanes, and container ships.

• Multilateral trade agreements became a framework for cooperation.

Signed in 1948, the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (GATT) was the first global

multilateral agreement to lower trade barriers.

• An increasingly large proportion of economic activity depends on trade.

If we use the value of the goods and services we produce in a year–our GDP–as the U.S. economy,

then we can say that trade equaled one third of that total. And, it was an even larger proportion of

the world economy.

How does it impact our lives?

Fig:3 Fig:4

Globalization has become part of the modern world, but many are yet to understand how it affects their

lives. Globalization affects every facet of our lives. These include educational system, healthcare, economy,

jobs, technology, and others.

Dear Learners,

It is important for us to explore this topic as it helps:

• Explain the impact of globalization on the economic and social sectors in our country.

• Evaluate economic protectionism in some countries and create alternative plans.

• Identify how globalization impacts individuals.

• Describe how globalization influence government policy.

Essential Questions

➢ How do different economic systems influence individual choices and the incentives to make those

choices?

➢ How do the decisions made by governments affect what is produced and who receives the benefits

of production?

➢ Why is the question of ‘who decides which products to sell to consumers’ important?

➢ Does trade and specialization affect our global economy?

➢ What effect do you think a ‘smaller world’ will have on the world economy?

Setting the Scope of Inquiry

In this Unit of Inquiry [UI] you will study

The UI Design & Journey

Introduce the UI- Unpacking

Introduction

To introduce the UI, Students will be asked inquisitive questions based on the their real life situation

Teacher will gauge the knowledge and awareness of the student through the magnitude of questions asked

and answered during interactive Group discussions.

Journey of UI

If we look at the past thirty years or so, we find that MNCs have been a major force in the globalization

process connecting distant regions of the world. Why are the MNCS spreading their production to other

countries and what are the ways in which they are doing so? The first part of the chapter discusses this.

Rather than relying on quantitative estimates, the rapid rise and influence of the MNCS has been shown

through a variety of examples, mainly drawn from the Indian context. Note that the examples are an aid to

explain a more general point. While teaching, the emphasis should be on the ideas and examples are to be

used as illustrations. You can also creatively use comprehension passages like the one given after Section

II to test and reinforce new concepts.

Integration of production and integration of markets is a key idea behind understanding the process of

globalization and its impact. This has been dealt with at length in this chapter, highlighting the role of

MNCS in the process. You have to ensure that the students grasp this idea with sufficient clarity, before

moving on to the next topic.

Globalisation has been facilitated by several factors. Three of these have been highlighted: rapid

improvements in technology, liberalization. post-liberalisation era. Similarly, international negotiations

under WTO and the uneven balances in power are interesting subjects that can be covered in a discussion

mode rather than as lectures.

The final section covers the impact of globalisation. To what extent has globalisation contributed to the

development process† This section draws on the topics covered in Chapters 1 and 2 (for example, what is

a fair development goal), which you can refer to. Also, examples and activities drawn from the local

environment are a must while discussing this section. This might include contexts that have not been

covered in the chapter, such as the impact of imports on local farmers, etc. Collective brainstorming sessions

can be conducted to analyse such situations.

UOI will consists of:

2 Bridge sessions, 5 sessions for transaction, 1 session for mid UOI review, 2 session for end of UOI

assessment and reflective dialogue.

Session Flow - Key Milestones

The Journey of this UI will be completed in 6 sessions.

The facilitator will show videos related to different types of transport and tell them what word comes in

their mind, how they are useful for the economy This will arouse curiosity among the learners to connect

them from known to unknown. This can be done by showing videos on YouTube.

Session 1: Unpacking of UI

To introduce the UI, Students will be asked inquisitive questions based on the their real life situation.

Teacher will gauge the knowledge and awareness of the student through the magnitude of questions asked

and answered during interactive group discussions.

Learners will be informed about the journey of the Ui and assessment Plan

Session 2: Bridge Session 2

What are some examples of globalization today? (web chart), Is globalization bad or good? Why? (Venn

diagram), Facilitator will facilitate the discussion in the class based on the responses.
