Greetings:

I am proud to present Atlanta’s Emerging Economic Developments, which high-

lights the latest developments around our city.

It’s an exciting time in the City of Atlanta. Every year, companies are voting with

their feet and choosing Atlanta as the destination to expand their campuses and

build their headquarters. Over the past four years, companies have discovered

what makes Atlanta a thriving, vibrant, and international city. Atlanta remains

home to the world’s busiest passenger airport, and we are the leader in global

and domestic air transportation.

Ranked as the number four top metropolitan region for entrepreneurial activity

by the Kauffman Foundation, Atlanta has also proven to be a destination for

technology and innovation. Our world-class developments and up-and-coming

attractions have created new opportunities for individuals and companies to

start and grow their businesses. Every ribbon cutting event and groundbreaking

ceremony is not just a win for our business community, it’s a win for Atlanta be-

cause these new developments create new jobs and revitalize neighborhoods

across our great city.

Our diverse and skilled workforce provides the ideal pool of talent for some

of the country’s most revered and fast-growing companies. Their presence in

the City of Atlanta sends a clear message to companies around the world that

Atlanta is open for business.

Thank you for your continued support.

Sincerely,

In 2013, The City of Atlanta announced its selection as

a 2014 Code for America City. The Code for America

Fellowship is an 11-month program where developers,

designers, researchers, and product managers work

alongside governments to solve community issues with

new technology. “Code for America offers our city

an unparalleled opportunity to encourage collective

problem-solving through civic collaboration, while

creating a more open and transparent government,”

said Mayor Kasim Reed. Over the past three years, the Fellowship program has produced more than 75 web

applications and partnered with 20 municipal governments. Past apps have supported citizen engagement,

criminal justice and public health. The City of Atlanta will work with fellows to develop a platform aimed at

connecting city services and operations to improve customer service.

Startup Atlanta introduces, connects, supports, and expands the entrepreneurial ecosystem within

the greater Atlanta region to bolster the creation of jobs, companies and wealth. The nonprofit was

and to compete with other venues across the country and world for national and international sporting

events. To promote full and equal business opportunities in connection with the design and construction

of the new stadium, the Atlanta Falcons and the GWCCA have agreed to develop an Equal Business

Opportunity Plan that will ensure at least 31 percent participation by women and minority business

enterprises. The stadium deal terms will ensure that the Atlanta Falcons will remain in the city for 30

years, and includes more than $30 million in direct investment for the English Avenue, Vine City and

Castleberry Hill neighborhoods, and a $50 million investment in infrastructure improvements in the area

adjacent to the proposed new stadium.

aims to increase urban mobility, sustainable development, and livability in the City of Atlanta. Following

the initial launch, additional lines are planned, and there will be expanded destinations and landmarks

throughout the city. The project was partially funded by the $47.6 million TIGER Grant, which is designed

to help upgrade transportation networks.

atlanta beltline

The sustainable redevelopment project combines 22 miles of pedestrian-friendly rail transit with 33

miles of multi-use trails and is the most comprehensive transportation and economic development

effort ever undertaken in the City of Atlanta. The Atlanta BeltLine is one of the most wide-ranging

urban redevelopment programs currently underway in the United States. The project supports Atlanta’s

growth by creating an unprecedented expansion of park land and public spaces, while supporting the vital

expansion of the regional transit and transportation network. To date, the $325 million spent on land

acquisition and development is expected to generate $1 billion in revenue. The BeltLine received the

2013 National Smart Growth Award from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, beating 77 cities

nationwide for the agency’s highest honor, and was recently awarded the prestigious Prix d ‘Excellence

Award from the International Real Estate Federation (FIABCI). This is the first international award for the

BeltLine, which received recognition as the best environmental rehabilitation project in the world.

Office of Entertainment opened in 2013 and has worked to: streamline the film permitting process, assist

with facilitating employment of local talent, create production-related educational and training opportunities,

and safeguard the interests of residents and businesses affected by film productions. The state of Georgia

estimates that in 2012, the economic impact of the entertainment industry in Georgia exceeded $3 billion.

Out of 253 productions filmed in Georgia last year, 75-80 percent were filmed in the metropolitan Atlanta

region. Atlanta has recently been selected as the number three city in America for film and entertainment.

Mayor Kasim Reed has committed to a $150-$250 million bond offering to address the city’s $900 million

infrastructure backlog. This bond referendum will expand our green spaces and improve our roads,

bridges, and sidewalks. To achieve this goal without the need for a tax increase, Mayor Reed appointed a

16-member Commission on Waste & Efficiency in Government to identify potential cost savings in City

of Atlanta government. The results of the Commission’s work will be instrumental in proceeding with the

bond referendum. The investment in infrastructure will further stimulate economic activity, and make

Atlanta more accommodating to traditional and alternative modes of transportation.

Mayor Kasim Reed has been an adamant supporter of programs and initiatives that support immigrants,

refugees and foreign-born visitors, who are all critical contributors of Atlanta’s social and economic

fabric. Metropolitan Atlanta has the second fastest growing foreign-born population in the country, after

least one employee. Since its launch, more than 1,400 companies participated in the year-long campaign,

leading to more than 16,200 jobs for people. The “Hire One” job fair drew more than 3,000 people, of

which several hundred were placed in employment.

in our state, new immigrant business owners generate business revenue of $2.9 billion a year, which is no

small amount, and equates to more than 12 percent of all business income in the state.

Atlanta has joined the Welcoming Cities and Counties Initiative, a national program created by Welcoming

America that brings together leading local governments from across the country to create immigrant-

friendly communities that maximize opportunities for economic growth and cultural vitality. The program

positions communities as globally competitive, 21st century leaders.

eConomiC reCovery

during Mayor Kasim Reed’s first four years in office, the City of Atlanta implemented a

comprehensive pension reform program that has been nationally lauded and has reduced the annual

pension cost by about $15 million while addressing a $1.5 billion unfunded pension liability. The pension

reform will save the city $270 million over 10 years and up to $500 million over the next 30 years. For

four years in a row, the city’s budget has remained balanced without a property tax increase. In addition,

the city’s unemployment rate has dropped to 6.8 percent, which is the lowest it has been since 2008.

In 2012, Atlanta was selected by CNBC as the number one city for stock performance. “Atlanta has

had amazing growth the last 20 years. It’s anchored by some well-known Fortune 500 companies but

is filled with mid-caps on the rise, has a nice climate, a manageable cost of living and along with it, plenty

of transplanted New yorkers who now call it home,” said Brian Sullivan, anchor of CNBC’s Street Signs.

“Atlanta can also brag it is the only city of the 23 indexes we created where none of its biggest company

stocks dropped during that time. That is pretty spectacular.”

Also in 2012, Atlanta was recognized for being voted as one of the top 25 most innovative cities in the

world as part of Citi’s “City of the year” program in partnership with The Wall Street Journal and the

Urban Land Institute.
