    Introduction

    Sugarcane is mainly cultivated inPelwatta, Sewanagala and Hinguranaareas in Sri Lanka

    Pelwattaand Sewanagalaare situated inMonaragala district while Hingurana islocated in Amparadistrict

    Total area under cane (with ratoons) 7,317ha

    Area harvested 6,476ha

    Cane harvested 349000MT

    Average yield 56MT/ha

    Sugar production (without sweeping) 38000MT

    Sugar recovery rate 7.4%

    The land extent in Hinguranais around200ha while Monaragaladistrict has a vastextent of 7320ha

    Therefore, Monaragaladistrict contributesmore than 98% to sugarcane cultivatedlands in Sri Lanka

    Off-season

    The time period that sugarcane farmershave not get any income from sugarcane

    Falls on mid September to mid March

    As sugarcane required two distinctweather conditions as follow;

    Off-season falls on rainy season whichtakes place in September to March at

    Monaragala

    For growing season warm days withadequate rainfall, long hours of brightsunshine and higher relative humidity

    For ripening season - warm days, clearskies, cool nights and relatively a dryweather without any rainfall

    Justification

    A considerable time period of off-seasonfrom September-March

    Farmers are not receiving any incomefrom sugarcane cultivation in that period

    Therefore farmers have to engage insome other livelihood activities to earn fortheir subsistence
