Microsystem A microsystem is the immediate setting in which an individual is directly exposed too on a daily basis. This level has a major impact on the adolescent. Community New surrounding, new neighbours and friends. Total change in culture and attitudes which he was accustomed too. Religious Beliefs Used to be a very devout Catholic and close to his parish. Due to his experiences of his father passing away, he has in turn lost faith. School Due to his mother new job, he has had to start a new school. Anti social a bitter due to having to start over. Family Single Mother, Father passed away 6 months ago. Only child His mother has recently been offered a new job, in Canberra. They originally had lived Sydney. His sudden changes in life have caused him to become resistant and rebellious. Failure to interact with others within his new community.

Mesosystem Mesosystem The second element in Brofenbrenner’s model is the mesosystem. It provides a link or connection between the different settings in the adolescents life, significantly within their microsystem.

Charlie’s relationship with his mother has become bitter since the move. This is linked to concepts withinhis microsystem, due to his family lifelacking stability.

The relationship Between Charlie and hisschool, is off to a negative start. This links in with his outlookon education, thereforehe may be effectedacademically. Also having a negative relationshipwith his teacher.

His new community and peers has made it difficult for Charlie during his time of need. A large part ofhis microsystem has changed whichin turn effects his ecological system as a whole.

Change inpersonality in order to fit in with peer expectations of his new class mates.

Relationship with his teacher and mother is one of concern for Charlie, which therefore allows Charlie to feel smothered and trapped.

ExosystemExosystem

Having to leave home has greatly effected by Charlie, his entire world as he knew it has changed and has had to start over as a result. This is a structural part of his life yet he has no effect over it. He does not chose were to move to, yet it effectshim. Sydney has a different way of life as opposed to Canberra, a different mindset on what significant in life. This move can alter the development of Charlie’s personality and values.

Due to his Mother’s income being minimal

he cannot afford such leisure's as

his peers. Their financialposition has effect

Charlie socially.Subsequently as a resultof his mothers new job they are now able to

live a more comfortable life.

Feeling as though hemust assume the maledominate role withinhis family. This hascaused him to feel as though he must grow up before his time. His fathers death is something he had no control,yet it effects him greatly.

The Exosystem is a layer in which the adolescent does not deal with directly, but can greatly effect the inner layers. An can play a large roll and significant impact on their development.

His lack of spiritual life and structure, could potentially lead him to bad habitssuch as smoking and associating with what society perceives as bad crowd.

Due to coming from a suburban a area of Canberra he was never exposedto the different peopleand cultures encompassedin Sydney this could cause a slight culture shock for Charlie who led a sheltered life.

and atmosphere he was accustom to, his

new town which is more fast paced, that has

little time for religious orspiritual obligations. It

therefore contributes toCharlie's already lack of faith to move further

away from his spiritual life.

The Macrosystem is based on the global and ideological aspects of the adolescents life. It contains the core values an structures that compose a particular culture. ( White . F, B. Hayes, D.Livesey, Developmentally psychology (pp. 1-29). )

His value of education is not as it was before. His mother places a great value on education and enforces this value on Charlie.

The expectations of society, and feeling ofhaving to conform tofit in, rather than being a individual.

Charlie (Avatar) Statistical “Average”(The Australian population at the time of

census in 2006 was 19,885,288)• 14 year old male

•Single mother

•The median age for an Australian according to the Australian bureau of Statistics, is 37

therefore in relation to age Charlie does not meet the statistical average.

•Based on the 2006 census there were 141,732 14 year old males within the Australian

population. Due to Charlie being 14 in 2009, meant that he was 11 at the time of census

therefore there are 140,926 boys in Australia that are his age.

• The majority of adolescents’ with in Australia belong to a couple as a opposed to a single parent family. According to the 2006 census

there were 162,7165 couples with children as opposed to 823,254 single parents.

• Family composition in reference the to ABS states that there are 353,683 one parent

families with children under 15 and no dependent students and non-dependent

children. There are 1263,724 couples in the same situation.

•These statistics indicate that Charlie's circumstance does not meet the statistical

average.

•There seems to be a common trend within Australia, with a significant amount of people consistently moving residence.•According to the ABS , every years approximately 3,093, 23 people move houses within a year. Whilst 7,458,217 moving every 5 years.•Hence Charlie moving houses is not beyond the Australia norm.

•In 2006 there were 5, 126, 884 which associated with Catholics. This means that in 2006 25.82% of the population acknowledged themselves as Catholics.•Therefore Charlie's religious affiliation is makes up the major religion within Australia.
