In 2014-2015, we focused on building resiliency and adaptability, two key components in the new economy.

We put our new niche into action, our vision established in spring of 2015, based on what makes our kids shine:

Our social learning in action has granted us the opportunity to officially been accepted as a UNESCO associated school as of 2015-2016. It is an honour to be among the first three elementary schools in this school division and the first French Immersion elementary school in Pembina Trails to be part of a network of schools who are all working towards building cultures of peace. Indigenous drumming experienced with elders and Clint McDonald we will continue to honour our First Nations with a recent K-12 provincial curriculum: (http://www.edu.gov.mb.ca/k12/abedu/foundation_gr12/index.html) through the arts. As a culturally responsive school, we received a generous grant through the Manitoba Arts Council to invite reputable Manitoban artists to continue promoting the Seven Teachings and building a culture of peace. These include:

Margaret Shaw MacKinnon, story writer and former student from this school who continues to appreciate coming back as a special guest

Buffy Handel: Aboriginal School of Dance

Casmiro Nhussi and Jay Stoller: African Dance through the Rhythm of the Heart

Ursula Neufeld: Collective Mural summarizing our artistic journey, acknowledging where we are and where we are headed

As feedback from students, parents and staff was very positive, we will continue to start off the day with Active Start, also known as Active Smart. This will continue to create the conditions for:

Mark Your Calendars Our kick-off assembly took place on Sept. 15. We congratulate Julian and Emily for being our MC’s as well as Zoe and Kade for having rang the bell to initiate this positive school year. All families are welcome to attend every assembly, including the extended family as we know they play a significant role in child development. There is no need for families to sign into the office when they come to assemblies. Welcome to My Classroom, a special and informal evening greeting families and setting them off on the right foot for a successful school year was a huge success. Thank you for your presence. Creating the Conditions We continue to create the conditions to build trust through love and belonging with the enhancement of our school grounds and building. Such renovations include:

New drainage base for 2 main play structures

New fencing on the north side to enhance student safety

Freshly painted brick walls to brighten up our space

A freshly painted shed, an unexpected surprise by the school division

Brand new doors in certain regions of our building

New Canadian and Franco-Manitoban flags to celebrate our rights,

We are grateful to Gabler’s Construction for the impeccable job in installing the crushed limestone underneath our blue tables. We are also validating Karlee Spiers’, Andrea Couling’s and other parents’ support in watering new sod, the pumpkins and flowers. Our students are looking forward to experimenting with the pumpkins they planted. Wishing everyone a successful school year in which we will all feel and make others feel acknowledged, accepted and appreciated throughout all our interactions with everyone we meet.

Active Start is a program developed by a group of early years educators within the Pembina Trails School Division that were intrigued by the results of very recent research connecting physical activity to increased school engagement and academic achievement. Active Start allows students and staff to begin their school day with movement!

Since Active Start programs began, teachers, education assistants, administrators and clinicians alike have seen remarkable decreases in a number of common childhood anxieties. Decreases in impulsive decision making, depression, anxiety, restlessness, anger, and aggression by students have all been noted since the introduction of an Active Start program. Not to mention, students love the chance to be active and get some extra socialization in before the day begins! Last year our Active Start program was a success and we received lots of positive feedback from the École Tuxedo Park community. It was noted by many staff members, students, and parents that our sense of community was strengthened and our feelings of well-being were increased. We will be continuing our Active Start program here at École Tuxedo Park for all Kindergarten to Grade 6 students, but have made some small changes. All students and staff members will begin each day with a 15-20 minute walk or run around the exterior of our beautiful school, unless it is raining or colder than -20ºC. Attendance will be taken before Active Start begins, therefore punctuality is essential! We are optimistic that this initiative will continue to enrich our school’s sense of community and the well-being of all participants. Pembina Trails School Division Information

Children with Severe Allergies At this time of year, we are often asked by parents whether their child needs to carry their Epi- Pen on their person. According to our Policy JLCD and specifically Regulation JLCD-R — Administering Medicines to Students, students MUST have their Epi-Pen on themselves at all times. JLCD-R Administering Medicines to Students: Page 11: "9. Medication that may be required urgently shall not be stored in a locked location. Such medication shall be carried at all times on the student or adult responsible to administer the medication. Such medication includes, but is not limited to: (a) inhalers; (b) injectable adrenalin ("Adrenaline auto-injector (EPI-PEN) or equivalent). Page 16: 112. Care and control — except for inhalers and auto-injectors (EPI-PEN) (which need to be on the student at all times), medication shall be in the care and control of a responsible adult." When a child is on a field trip, the teacher needs to ensure that the child has their EPI-PEN on them before they leave, and again the child needs to wear their Epi-Pen on them at all times. Strong Beginnings 2016-2017

What is Strong Beginnings? It is an assessment process designed to enhance assessment and planning, which begins in all classrooms on the first day of school and continues throughout the year. The Strong Beginnings assessments are not tests and therefore will not be graded. They are assessments to determine the level at which each student is working so that the teacher can provide appropriate instruction to promote learning and academic growth.

How does Strong Beginnings work? On either Friday, September 16th or Monday, September 19th, each student from Kindergarten to Grade 9 will attend school by appointment for 60-90 minutes to participate in assessment activities in English Language Arts, Mathematics and Français, if applicable. (Details about each student’s appointment time and the assessment process will be provided by the school.) During this time, they will meet individually or in small groups with their teacher. This is an opportunity for teachers to gather data about each student’s learning that may not be evident during whole class assessment activities. It is also a chance to further build a positive student-teacher relationship. What will teachers learn through Strong Beginnings? Teachers working with their students in an atmosphere of support and encouragement will collect firsthand information on each of the students about:

how they learn;

the learning strategies they possess and their approach to problem solving;

their reading, writing and mathematical skills;

their attitudes toward school and learning;

their confidence as learners. How will the assessment information be used?

To set goals for learning. Typically, information about your child is shared at conference time; however, if there is a need for specialized instruction, parents are contacted early in the fall term.

To enhance teachers’ instructional planning.

To improve curriculum implementation.

Welcome to Music! – September Newsletter 2016 Hello, and welcome back to an exciting year of music-making at École Tuxedo Park! Mme Phillips is teaching French Immersion music instruction to the Kindergarten to Grade 6 students, as well as École Tuxedo Park Chorale. In the music classroom, your child can look forward to working on beat, rhythm, notation, song, instrumentation, movement, listening, and other musical elements, all within the frame of a variety of themes. The music classroom will be a source of creativity, enjoyment, and community for our school. We will update you concerning musical events and news by way of the music website (www.etpmusic.weebly.com), monthly school newsletters, and/or notes home.

We welcome any community members and family to our classroom to share their musical talents, thus enriching our program. If you would like to be contacted when these events are being planned, please let the office know, or contact me as above. IMPORTANT MUSIC INFORMATION FOR THE START OF THE YEAR: 1) In Grades 3/4, 5 and 6 your child will be learning to play the recorder! Your family has two options: a) use the good quality recorder that you already own (Aulos, Dolmetsch, or Yamaha name brands) b) use the Yamaha recorder provided to your child the first week of school by Mme Phillips. Please have recorders at school by Friday, September 23rd. 2) École Tuxedo Park Chorale begins on Tuesday, September 27th, for those students in Grades 3 to 6 who have returned a signed contract to Mme Phillips. Rehearsals will run every DAY 4, starting at 12:10 p.m. in the Music Room. Rehearsals will run from 12:10 p.m. to 1:05 p.m. on Day 4’s. 2. Message from Mme Allard, Physical Education for Kindergarten to Grade 4

Our school believes that physical education is an essential aspect of every child’s life. A quality physical education, based on active participation, respect and responsibility, will help promote children’s health and a positive self-image. The focus of the program at Tuxedo Park is to develop basic movement, manipulation and rhythmic skills, to improve overall fitness and to increase knowledge and understanding of the factors associated with the development of fitness, strength, flexibility and agility. Safety, teamwork and fair play are other essential components of our physical education program. All students are expected to actively participate in every physical education class. To ensure their ability to participate safely, students must wear clean, non-marking indoor running shoes for all indoor gym classes and outdoor running shoes for outdoor physical activities. If your child is unable to participate in a physical activity, please send me a note with the particulars. Thank you. Terry Fox Run Due to scheduling concerns, we have moved the Terry Fox Run from September 30th to Friday October 7th. Tuxedo Park will have our annual Terry Fox Run/Walk, from 9:20 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. I encourage all students to either bring in a loonie or a twoonie to help support this cancer research fundraiser. All family members are welcome to join us if they can.

Jungle Gym Every school day 1, we will have our Jungle Gym set up for the entire day. A variety of stations will be set up so that students can rotate from one station to the next and have fun while developing their manipulation and movement skills. Sports Leaders Grade 5 and 6 students will have the opportunity to become our school’s official Sports Leaders. What do Sports Leaders do? They help set up and take down the Jungle Gym every school day 1. They help with special physical activity events such as the Terry Fox Run, Wheelies Day, Festival du Voyageur Activity Day, and Jump Rope for Heart. They help younger students figure out what to do and where to go on special event days. Being a Sports Leader is being a helper and an inspiration to others. We will have our 1st Sports Leaders meeting on Tuesday September 13th at 10:30 a.m. This is a great opportunity for Grade 5 and 6 students to have fun together while helping younger students at our school! More details will be sent out to the Grade 5 and 6 students within the next two weeks. Extra-Curricular Clubs I teach physical education at Tuxedo Park every morning, except school day 4. Since I teach at Van Walleghem School almost every afternoon, I will offer extra-curricular clubs in the mornings, before our school day begins. I will begin with a Sports Leaders Club for Grade 5 and 6 students every Tuesday and Thursday morning, from 8:15a.m. to 9:00 a.m., beginning on September 13th and ending on October 13th. I will also have a Jungle Gym Club during the lunch hour on school day 1 and this would give each class the opportunity to have one extra period of time having fun with our Jungle Gym. I am honored to have the opportunity to work with the Tuxedo Park students and their families this year. I look forward to meeting all of you. My goal is to make physical education at Tuxedo Park a 5 Star 5-A Program: 1. Absolutely 2. Amazing 3. Activities 4. Always 5. Awesome! Mme Allard Éducation physique de 3e/4e, 5e, et 6e – Grade 3/4, Grade 5, Grade 6 Physical Education It is my pleasure to continue working as a physical education teacher at École Tuxedo Park, and this year my teaching responsibilities will be exclusive to Grades 3/4, Grade 5, and Grade 6. Our school believes that Physical Education is an essential and unique part of a child’s education, and that a quality Physical Education program will improve students’ health, decrease stress, increase independence and self-esteem, develop social skills and provide the necessary foundation to enable children to choose a healthy lifestyle. The Phys. Ed. program at École Tuxedo Park is based on participation, responsibility and respect. The focus of the program is on the development of basic movement skills, individual and team activities and rhythmic skills, fitness skills, and knowledge. The program exposes the students to a variety of activities, with a strong emphasis placed on skill development, fair play and safety. All children are required to participate in every Physical Education class. If your child is unable to participate in a physical activity, please send me a note with the particulars. Gym class is one part of our program. Intramurals, clubs, special workshops and clinics, and interschool athletics provide an opportunity for all students to get involved. All students are encouraged to participate. Grade 5 and 6 students are expected to change for Physical Education. All other students may change if they do so quickly. Students should bring a bag to carry their gym clothing. Just a friendly reminder that we are “scent-aware” school so students are encouraged to use a deodorant/antiperspirant as necessary, but no body sprays please.

It is essential that all students have proper, clean, non-marking running shoes for indoor gym classes, as well as proper outdoor running shoes. Children wearing sandals, Crocs, dressy shoes, flip flops, boots etc. will be limited in their participation. In September, we often go outside for physical education. Cross-Country Meets Our Grade 4 – 6 students will be participating in cross country running competitions at Marj Edey Park (Varsity View Sportsplex) on September 20th and 27th. (A rain date is scheduled for October 4th.) All students will be participating unless they are medically unable to do so. The races will start at 1:30 and finish by 2:30 and transportation will be provided by the school. All parents are encouraged to come out and cheer on our students. Clubs Cross Country Running Club for Grades 3-6 students started on September 9th and will run during the lunch hour on Days 2 and 6 of the school cycle. Students will run before eating and will then be supervised while eating their lunches. Please do not send heat-ups for your child if he/she is planning on running.

3. Conseillère - Counselling Dear Parents and Guardians, Welcome back everyone! My name is Darci Adam, and I am sharing the counselling role this year with Julie Phillips. I will be here Days 1, 2, 3 and 6. We are also welcoming a new Masters in Counselling student named Andrea Young, who will be supporting the counselling program Day 3 mornings. Andrea is a teacher at St. James Collegiate and has had some prior experience as a guidance counsellor. She also spent several years working in China. We are thrilled to welcome her to our team! We will also be welcoming the youngest member of the École Tuxedo Park into the building. Leo, at a ripe old

age of 4 weeks, is Zinnia’s baby brother, and he will be teaching students in Madame Potter’s Roots of Empathy class, along with his mom Megan. We are grateful to be able to continue this wonderful program, and happy that Madame Potter’s class will be the home class, given that she and baby Eric were our Roots family last year. One of the most important things we learned was that love grows babies. This teaching fits perfectly in our little school with a big heart! I would like to sincerely welcome all new families to ÉTP. I will do my best to ensure all students feel welcome and included at school, by offering Friendship groups and ensuring that student ambassadors in each class follow up to ensure all students have someone to play with. We will continue the many ways we reach out to our community at ÉTP. This will include our ongoing liaison with Tuxedo Villa, which Grade 5 students visit weekly to befriend seniors. In closing, we are pleased to open the school year celebrating Peace Days, which run September 15-22. At ÉTP, we create a culture of peace by sharing our feelings and talking things out, as well as practicing self-regulation strategies such as mindfulness, wherein we bring attention to our breath.

4. École Tuxedo Park Parent Advisory Council Welcome back returning parents, students and staff, and an extra warm welcome to our new parents, students and staff! I hope you all had a wonderful summer and are looking forward to another successful school year at École Tuxedo Park. Our first PAC (Parent Advisory Council) meeting of the 2016 / 2017 school year is on Monday, September 19th at 7:00 p.m. All are welcome! Our PAC meetings occur the 3rd Monday of every month from 7 – 8:30 p.m. in the library at ÉTP. In June, we have our meeting in the home of one of the parents. Please see below for the meeting dates: Sept. 19 Oct. 17 Nov. 21 Dec. 19 Jan. 16 or 23 (to be confirmed) February 27 March 20 April 17 May 15 June 19 (this date may change) We are always looking for parents to join PAC. What’s the time commitment? Well it depends. We work really well as a team to help each out, and you can always count on the parents at ETP to volunteer for the events we hold each year, such as the annual PAC fundraiser, winter festival, spring planting and clean up, summer BBQ, movie nights and fun lunches. Whether you are interested to learn more about PAC and what we do, or you want to take on a specific volunteer role, we would love to see you at our next meeting. Please come on September 19th @ 7 p.m. and check it out. You are always welcome to attend our meetings throughout the year. 1. If you send a warm up for your child's lunch, please ensure it requires less than 1 minute to warm up. 20 kids X 1 Minute = a lot of waiting for lunch

2. Please refer to your classroom communications for any allergy alerts. 3. Please encourage the children to rinse their recyclable containers. So many dirty containers invite bugs and smell.

The City of Winnipeg is proud to provide a wide variety of recreation and leisure opportunities that contribute to the overall well-being of our community. The Leisure Guide is published three times per year and is filled with fun and exciting programs for everyone.

For more information on leisure, sport and fitness programs, please pick up a copy of the Leisure Guide, call 311 or visit Winnipeg.ca. Guides are available for pick up at civic indoor pools, libraries and leisure centres, and at a number of retail locations including Safeway, 7-Eleven and Mac’s.
