EPFL Research collaborations: Defined IP Policy
Company pays for a specific research project
GENERAL RULES
• Company priority to patent interesting results
• IP ownership transferred to Company if patent filed by Company
• Subject to specific cases, no royalties are due later by Company in
case of commercial exploitation of results
• Company and EPFL may freely use unpatented results, subject to
possible special clauses on software
• Free license from Company to EPFL on patented results outside of
a defined Field of Use, with the right to grant sublicenses. No
restriction of Field of Use for scientific research and education
• Right for EPFL to publish its scientific results - No secret results
• Background IP to be discussed if any
• 40% overhead on direct costs and expenses

Company is interested in the field and wish to
have a first insight
GENERAL RULES
• All rights on results remain with EPFL
• Company is regularly informed about the results
(reports, meetings, etc)
• Option for Company, limited in time, to negotiate
exploitation rights or transfer of IP (no obligation for EPFL
to conclude)
• Right for EPFL to publish its scientific results provided
company is given the opportunity to exercise its option (rel.
short delay to decide)
• Background IP to be discussed if any
