NAPIT ExpressesEnthusiasm OverGreen Deal LaunchThe much discussed “Green Deal”initiative was launched onMonday 28th January, designed tosave householders and businessesmoney on their energy bills andimprove their energy efficiency.NAPIT believes this can helpbring homes out of fuel poverty, help reduce the country’s carbonfootprint and provide a muchneeded boost to the energyefficiency industry.

Through the Green Deal, householders and businesses willbe able to pay for certain energyefficient improvements throughtheir energy bills, withoutexceeding the savings made as aresult of the improvements. Forexample, should a householderwant to install double glazedwindows in their home, they canhave this work paid for throughthe Green Deal scheme and havetheir costs covered through theirreduced energy bills.

A Green Deal cashback incentivehas been available since 14thJanuary, with the energy efficienthome improvement installationslaunched on the 28th January.

NAPIT Certification is a UKAS-accredited organisation whichprovides Green Deal Certificationfor Installers and AssessorOrganisations. NAPIT Trainingoffer training for Green DealAdvisors.

NAPIT Director of StandardsDivision, David Cowburn, said:“We are highly enthusiastic aboutthe launch of Green Deal and

what it means for the industryand householders across thecountry. Householders haveaccess to affordable, energyefficient measures for the first timeand this will have a positiveimpact on the energy efficiencyindustry. Also, it will help toreduce this country’s carbonfootprint.”

As well as leading to lower costenergy bills, the Department forEnergy and Climate Change(DECC) also fully expect theGreen Deal to provide a jobs boostfor “green” industries, inparticular, the insulation industry.Ed Davey, the Energy and ClimateSecretary, said. "All our estimatesshow that the Green Deal willincrease the number of jobs of thenext few years... to about 60,000 -that's nearly over double theamount of people working in theinsulation industry now.”

Ever since being written intoGovernment legislation on 1stOctober, the scheme has beenwidely debated in the press andin Parliament, as people havebeen unsure about the impact itwill have.

According to a recent poll, aboutone in five people (19%), aren’taware of the Green Deal. Despitethis, consumers are becomingmore concerned with energyefficiency, with 67% interested inmaking their home more energyefficient with 86% seeing lowerbills as the key benefit. Therefore, with a greaterawareness of the scheme, thebenefits will become clear to thesehomeowners who are looking tosave money on their energy billsthrough energy efficiency.

advanced technology that cancontribute significantly to savingenergy - in many cases as much as10% annually.

Conventional and programmableroom thermostats using the verylatest TPI technology (TimeProportional Integral) have provenfeatures that improve boiler firingefficiency and contributesignificantly to energy savings.

It is TPI technology around whichthe latest HRT room thermostatsand C-Stat programmable room

Kemper Systemshowcases complete

sustainable roofing solutionsKemper System’s stand (S1930) at this year’s Ecobuild (5-7 March) will markthe company’s return to the show for the second time building on the success of

last year’s Ecobuild with its Kemperol 2K-PUR solvent-free liquid waterproofing system and Stratex Warm Roof System.

The past year has seen a 33% growth insales for the hard-wearing and durablewaterproofing membrane, which bonds toalmost any substrate to create a totallyseamless, monolithic, U/V stable, elastomeric membrane. Based on an 80%castor-oil formulation derived fromsustainable sources, the liquid system alsoincorporates a flexible non-wovenreinforcement fleece, which ismanufactured using a 25% recycled plasticbottle content. As the resin saturates thefleece in a single application process, thecured membrane cannot delaminate.Offered with a 20-year warranty, theground-breaking system is both solvent-free and odourless, making it not onlyideal for sustainable new builds but alsoperfect for upgrades to occupied buildingsas the lack of nuisance odours means thatwork can be carried out while the buildingremains in normal use. Suitable forapplication on top of virtually all existingroofing materials, eco-friendly Kemperol2K-PUR can even help to prevent excessivewaste from being sent to landfill duringroof upgrades by avoiding the need tostrip out the existing substrate.

Complementing the sustainabilitycredentials of the Kemperol 2K-PURsystem, Kemper System’s Stratex WarmRoof System offers a completely integratedwarm roof system that incorporatesprimers, vapour barrier, insulation andwaterproofing with a range of optionalsurfacing. Featuring a rigid PIR insulationboard with a unique tongue and grooveinterlocking joint, the system significantlyreduces cold bridging and gives a muchsmoother surface finish.Kemper System will also be showcasingthe company’s Kempergro Green RoofSystem, a three-section system comprisinga reservoir attenuation composite, growing

medium and vegetation. The reservoirattenuation layer includes an upper filterfleece, central reservoir core and lowerprotection fleece, which are manufacturedfrom 90% recycled materials and factorybonded to maximise performance andsimplify installation. Suitable for use withthe Kemperol 2K PUR waterproofingmembrane, Kempergro has a growingmedium that is 100% composed ofrecycled brick, tiles and green compost, which is processed and graded to supportan extensive range of sedum, meadow andlawn roof media.

Visitors to Kemper System’s stand will beable to see how each of the systems havebeen used in practice, including how theKemperol 2K-PUR waterproofingmembrane and Stratex Warm Roof Systemhave been used together on various highprofile projects. There will also be anumber of display areas where visitors tothe stand will be able to view samples ofthe cured product to experience first handthe flexibility and durability it offers.

Comments managing director of KemperSystem, Harry Cowell: “Ecobuild was agreat show for us last year and it’s fantasticto see that there is such a strong appetitefor genuinely sustainable products and ecosolutions amongst both specifiers and endusers. The growth in Kemperol 2K-PURand our Stratex Warm Roof System reallydemonstrates that specifiers are no longerplaying lip service to sustainableconstruction but are genuinely puttingsustainability at the heart of our builtenvironment: Kemper System is delightedto be part of that move towards a greenerfuture.”For further company information visitwww.kempersystem.co.uk

Aggregate cladding panels from Steni UK were specified forone of the UK’s first operational zerocarbon buildings for arange of reasons ranging from aesthetics to practicality.

Some 600m² of Steni’s sparkling white Nature panels, which are manufacturedfrom a fibreglass reinforced polymer composite with a surface of aggregatednatural stones, were used as a rainscreen system at the landmark myplaceyouth centre in the London borough of Havering.

The £4million project is the town’s first operational zero-carbon building andone of the first of its kind in the UK. It has delivered a BREEAM Excellentrating with energy efficient features such as natural ventilation anddaylighting, high insulation levels and solar panels.

The Steni Nature panels, which were face-fixed with colour-coded screwsand the lower levels finished with an anti-graffiti coating, were specified byarchitects Jacobs for main contractor Apollo Property Services Group for atrio of main reasons.

Available in 17 different natural stone colours and up to five different gradesincluding the micro-fine used at myplace, the panels are water, impact andUV-resistant. As a rainscreen system, they are also installed as a dry tradeand as such are not subject to the vagaries of the British weather.

Designed in the form of a caterpillar, to represent change and development, with a curved timber and steel roof, the 2,000m² building comprises a danceand music performance hall which has used curved glulam timber beamsto create a double-height space. In addition, it features a recording studio, bike workshop, computer suite, juice bar, café, crèche and informationservice.

Jacobs’ design was approved over four others by the centre’s youth boardwho met with Shelley Smith fortnightly to check the project’s progress. Itsdevelopment was the result of the Harold Hill Ambitions consultation whereresidents said they wanted more for young people to do.

“Havering Council’s aspirations for the building were inspirational from thestart,” said Shelley Smith.

Catering for 11 to 21-year-olds but with a particular focus on 14 to 19-year-olds, the centre replaces the former Albemarle centre and was funded bygrants from the Big Lottery and Veolia Cleanaway Trust as well as fundingfrom the London Borough of Havering. Rockfon makes quick-service restaurant moresustainable Catering for athletes and visitors at theworld’s largest sporting event involvedconstruction of the largest quick-servicerestaurant in the world. Designed to betemporary, the building had to be trulysustainable, so everything from thefurniture and kitchen equipment to lightbulbs and switches was transferred to othernew and existing outlets across the UK afterthe event. This accounted for around 75%of the building, with almost everything elsebeing recycled, including the colourfulRockfon ceiling tiles.

A re-use or recycle policy was applied toevery item possible in the restaurant. Whenit came to the ceilings, it was felt that thetiles might be damaged after installationand subsequent removal, making it moredifficult to re-use them.

Around 1200m2 of Rockfon’s 1200x600mmBlack ceiling tiles were specified for therestaurant to enhance the design andatmosphere of the space. The tiles also offervery high sound absorption, which isessential for busy fast-food outlets, alongwith excellent fire safety and resistance tohumidity. 480m2 of Rockfon Color-all Beigetiles were also supplied to a smaller outleton site.

Rockfon’s new Color-all range comprises34 colours from subtle to bold, withimproved surface smoothness and a mattfinish to give colours their true expression.

Most importantly for the temporaryoutlet, all Rockfon ceiling tiles are fully recyclable.

Rockfon worked closely with the maincontractor, Barlow Group, to coordinate thereturn of all the ceilings to the Rockwoolfactory in South Wales when the restaurantswere decommissioned. The 24 pallets ofreturned materials were then crushed andcombined with raw materials to create newRockwool insulation products.

This process is more than just recycling, it’supcycling, since the resulting products areof equal quality to those made entirely fromnew or virgin materials.

With an annual energy bill of £1.4m for non-tenant areas, the owners of Bluewater will use software developed bySefaira (http://www.sefaira.com/) to lower its costs andcarbon footprint, which is currently equivalent to 14,000homes.

“These sorts of figures are typical across the retail industry,”said Sefaira CEO Mads Jensen. “Combined, the country’s40 biggest shopping centres consume about £40m of energyannually. Our challenge is to raise the efficiency atBluewater – halve its energy consumption – to make it anindustry leader.”

Using its ground breaking technology, Sefaira has beguncrunching huge amounts of data from Bluewater thatinfluences the centre’s carbon footprint such as the buildingfabric, heating and cooling systems, lighting, as well asdaylight and building controls.“The process starts with pinpointing inefficiencies acrossthe public areas of the centre’s 1.6m square feet of floor

area,” said Mads Jensen. “Then over the next two monthswe will work closely with the Bluewater team to design aprogramme of upgrades and improvements to unlockmaximum savings at minimum cost – before sequencingthese enhancements in the most capital efficient waypossible.”

Describing Sefaira’s groundbreaking approach as “anexciting, integrated, holistic way to enhance energyefficiency”, Lend Lease – who manage and part ownBluewater – said the approach may be extended out acrossother parts of its property portfolio.

“Over the past years we have worked very hard to manageenergy use at our retail centres, achieving reductions ofaround 20 percent,” said Pascal Mittermaier, Head ofSustainability for Europe, Middle East and Africa at LendLease. “But we are reaching the limits of what traditionalmethods can achieve. If we want to make another majorstep, we need to rethink our overall approach.”

“Traditionally building operators have taken a piecemeal approach to managing facilities. For example by focusingon lighting one year, doors the next and the boiler system

the year after, it's possible to capture regular efficiencies ofbetween two and three percent.

“Bluewater has been successful here achieving significantreductions – but now we need a different approach.”

"But what we are now embarking on with Sefaira is a deep, integrated analysis of huge amounts of data – and thensequencing the changes in such a way as to deliversubstantial savings for a significantly smaller capital outlay.

“Our ambition is to reduce common energy use by 50percent – saving us and our clients money and reducingthe centre’s carbon footprint even further.”

GOING GREEN- radical new technology tohalve Bluewater's massive

energy billWork has begun to halve the seven-figure energy bill at Bluewater, the leading

retail, leisure and events destination, and transform it into Europe’s mostenergy efficient retail complex.

An innovative product - which is alsoincredibly easy to process - Dendrolightis manufactured entirely from renewablematerials. The panels are produced to becombined with any surface layer, offeringnew design possibilities to the interiordesign, furniture and constructionsectors. The key feature of the product lies in theunique manufacturing process. Its

middle-layer is made of Spruceor Pine which are gluedtogether in perpendicularangles and sliced into layersthat can be surfaced with solidwood, plywood and MDF.As well as producing a material

that offers exceptional stability, theinnovative manufacturing processutilised by Dendrolight reduces theweight of solid wood by 40% reaching aslow as 250kg/m3. In addition,Dendrolight offers a number of otherbenefits including low swellingcharacteristics, high surface rigidity and

good screw holding. Plus, during production of theDendrolight core, 1m3 of raw timber ismade into 0.65m3 of sawdust for biomasfuel pellets, therefore producing 1.4m3 ofproduct from just 1m3 of raw timber.Latham’s director, Andrew Wright, commented, “We have a great trackrecord for bringing new and innovativeproducts to the market and Dendrolightticks all the boxes for us. As well asbeing highly sustainable, it offers interiordesigners, furniture makers and theconstruction sector another option whichgoes beyond the borders set by thestructural and technical characteristics ofsolid wood.”

Anne Sheridan, the business manager of the school,

made this statement regarding why the new building

was named ‘The Tree House’: “Sustainability is a very

prominent ethos throughout our school; it is something

that we try to inform all of our students about. We are

happy to announce that we are the first school in

Slough to get a green flag rating; this was one of the

key incentives behind the name. Another factor is that

the school is immersed in nature, entirely surrounded

by trees...so it simply seemed applicable.”

The school opted for a modular building because it

required an increased capacity in a short space of time;

furthermore, the cost of the build was inherently far

less than that of regular construction. Anne Sheridan

also informs us that a great deal of research went into

the building: Word of mouth speaks volumes, and

through a continued correspondence with other schools

in Slough we found that one name featured heavily,

that name was Wernick. we visited other schools that

had recently expanded to take a look at the work that

had taken place and were very impressed with the

results.”

Penn Wood Primary and Nursery Schoolbranches out with new building

'The Tree House'

In line with the eco-friendly ethos of Penn Wood Primary and NurserySchool (PWS) based in Slough, the school has called in the servicesof Wernick to produce a building to meet their ‘sustainable’ themed

criteria, a building justly called ‘The Tree House’.

The primary aged population is at the highestit has been for 50 years, an increase that isunlikely to subside, with primary schoolsexpected to face a further 18% rise in pupils by2020. Discussing the concept of an expansion, head teacher Jane Girle was adamant thatany new building was aesthetically pleasingand a mirror image of the main school building. The other primary objective was to ensure thatthe building conformed to the eco-friendlyphilosophy of the school. Fortunately, the highlyreceptive architects listened and workedalongside the school to produce a new‘sustainable’ building fit for teaching in the 21stcentury.

Constructing 3 new classrooms, together withtwo breakout rooms, Wernick, in conjunctionwith the appointed architects and the school’sown consultant cleverly utilised the space so asto not encroach on the outdoor areas andplaying fields. The cedar wooden cladding wasmatched carefully to the existing building andthe roof of the new building was in line withthe first floor of the main building.

The classrooms themselves are bright, airy andwell ventilated with air-conditioning. The new

building does not appear to be out of place andblends in effortlessly with the whole schoolenvironment.

The colour of the walls and carpets match thecurrent school décor and the children in theTree House do not feel segregated in any wayfrom the main building.

The construction was seamless – the modularbuildings were delivered over a period of twodays, and then the finishing work began inearnest. The construction team wereunobtrusive, and the noise levels were kept toa minimum and did not impact on the teachingand learning of the school.

All of the staff are delighted with the newbuilding and the classrooms; so much so thatthe school is currently in talks with SBCregarding a phase 2 expansion. All of theteachers conveyed a desire to move into thenew building as soon as possible, expressinghow much they believed it was in sync in termsof design, and welcoming the integration ofstate of the art ICT and air-con.

Eco-credentials and SustainabilityRatings are Key to Success

Over the last 20 years, the dynamics of the construction industry have beenrevolutionised and the importance placed on the environment has seen an

unprecedented upward turn.

The eco-credentials of Dura Cladding were a sellingpoint for Darin Shaikly, Managing Director of LanswoodLtd, when specifying products for his Lanswoodparkdevelopment in Essex:

“The use of high-end, eco-friendly and sustainablebuilding materials has been at the heart of this projectright from the very beginning. That’s why we were sopleased to hear about Dura Composites and team up

with a supplier with such world-leading sustainabilitycredentials.

“We were originally planning to use wood claddingboards, but once we became aware of the benefits ofDura Cladding it was the obvious choice. Dura Claddingis an exceptional product that will serve Lanswoodparkwell for many years to come.”

It is expensive and time-consuming to manufacturecladding and decking that is eco-friendly; In fact, the NPDprocess which resulted in the creation of Dura Cladding, our timber composite alternative to natural woodcladding, was elongated substantially by the need tocreate a sustainable and ‘green’ product.

However, where manufacturers of cladding which can’tboast these credentials have suffered in the recession, those that spent the time and money have flourished.

There are cynics that said that a timber composite couldnot be as green as natural wood but this simply isn’t true.

Stuart Burns, Director ofDura Composites, looksat how investing heavilyin the environmentally-friendly sourcing and thesustainability ofmaterials at the outsethas minimised theimpact of the downturnover the past few years.

An independent report from CERAM UK confirmedthat our products meet the highest sustainabilityspecifications. Not only is Dura Cladding made of 87%recycled materials, we achieved a world first earlierthis year when we became the first timber compositesupplier to become FSC ® 100% certified, guaranteeingthe use of FSC ® certified forests in our productionchain when specified.

And that’s not all when it comes to the environmentalcredentials of timber composite - products like ours arenot only made from recycled materials, they can alsobe recycled themselves - although in practice their longlife expectancy means this should rarely be necessary.

In terms of sustainability and cost-efficiency, a goodquality timber composite cladding rates highly. Wherehardwood cladding needs replacing after 15 years andsoftwood cladding every 10 years, a good qualitytimber composite should last over 25 years, evenwithout painting or staining and just a basic clean everyonce in a while.

It’s easy to identify quality timber composite productson the market because the best manufacturers offerwarranties of up to 25 years. If in doubt, ask for a listof results from their rigorous testing procedures.

It is likely that the popularity of eco-friendly claddingwill grow even more over the next few years, with theroll-out of the governments’ ‘Green Deal’. A claddingrange which has such a high recycled content and useswood which is procured through sustainable forestry isthe perfect finishing touch to an eco-friendly, lowemission house or office.

As the UK benefits from the costs savings associated withinsulating walls, timber composite cladding provides acost-effective and easy-to-install solution for transformingthe outside of any building.

Levolux goesto the Wyre

The recently completedheadquarters development forWyre Forest District Councilbrings together its office-basedstaff into a building designed toachieve BREEAM “excellent”rating. It benefits from a host ofenergy efficient features, includingan external Timber Fin SolarShading solution from Levolux.

Levolux devised a custom solutionincorporating Western Red CedarTimber Fins arranged into verticalstacks and into a horizontalprojection at high level. Fingerjointed, laminated aerofoil-shapedFins, each measuring 285mm deepby 45mm thick are alignedhorizontally to form an externalshading structure, measuring 7.2metres high with a projection of2.3 metres. Fins are fixed atvarying angles and with agraduated pitch to compensate forthe sun’s changing position andintensity.

This ensures the building receivesgreater protection from the sun inthe summer, but less in the winter, when solar heat gain is welcomed. At the same time, the Fins allowgood outward visibility foroccupants. The Fins are arrangedinto vertical stacks spanning 6metres between steel columns, with the help of vertical drop rodsrunning through the centre of allFins.

Metal-web joists pointthe way to efficientbuilding solutionsMore and more designers andspecifiers are choosing metal-webjoists as pressure mounts to reducecosts while improving energyefficiency and performance.

According to Karl Foster, sales andmarketing director of WolfSystems, the originators of thesuccessful easi-joist system, metal-webs are continuing to takemarket share from timber I-joistsand traditional sawn timberdespite tough trading conditions.

“Metal-webs continue to winmarket share over the competitionby simply being a better product”says Karl. “Once converted tometal-web, many contractors andbuilders won’t go back to usingproducts that don’t have theadvantages of metal web” headds.

Metal-web joists are lightweightcomposite structural beams

consisting of timber flanges joinedby a lattice of pressed steelconnector plates. The result is astrong joist with plenty of spacebetween the timbers toaccommodate wiring, pipeworkand other services.Metal-web joists share the samenail-plate design concept asmodern trussed rafters and havebeen seized upon by trussmanufacturers seeking a secondstring to their bow.“For many, the opportunity to sell

an engineered floor with anengineered roof is a bit of a ‘no-brainer’” observes Karl.

And, although developedspecifically as a floor joist, metal-webs offer such flexibility thatthey are increasingly used in walland roof constructions, particularly as a component inprefabricated “cassette” systems.

The performance of openrainscreen clad buildings can beenhanced with an innovativedevelopment in membranetechnology.

Glidevale, already one of the UK’sleading suppliers of membranesfor the building industry, underthe established Protect brand, hasadded Protect 200 Façade to itsportfolio, to optimize a structure’sweather resistance and vapourpermeability behind the cladding.

The new material is based onGlidevale’s popular TF200 ThermoBRE certified reflective lowemissivity breather membrane forwalls, bonded with a black, UVresistant fleece for maximumdurability. As a result, Protect 200Façade effectively allows vapourwithin the building to escape, whilst preventing rain, windblown snow and dust frompenetrating inside. UV and heatstabilised, it will not deterioratethrough exposure at open joints, and can be used with mostpopular cladding materialsincluding timber, aluminium, clayand stone.

As architects continue to push theboundaries there is an increasingneed to look at exciting newtechnologies that incorporaterecycled or renewable materials intheir construction, lessening theenvironmental toll. Green

architecture does not only benefitthe environment, investing ingreen materials also reducesenergy costs for structures byusing more efficient products.

The Russell Envirotile is the firstfully sustainable interlocking rooftile: manufactured from recycledpolypropylene (mainly from carcomponents such as bumpersnormally destined for landfill) itis also fully recyclable at the endof its life. Understanding theorigin of construction materials, including their environmental

impact, is an essential skill-set ofthe green specifier.

The innovative product has beenlaunched by leading independentmanufacturer Russell Roof Tiles,in collaboration with the GreenRoof Tile Company, and offers aserious response to the Code forSustainable Homes – theGovernment owned nationalstandard intended to encouragecontinuous improvement insustainable home building.

The Code for Sustainable Homescalls for a step change in the waynew homes are designed andconstructed. It is part of theGovernment’s programme toimprove the sustainability of newhomes, with a view to nationaltargets for reducing carbondioxide emissions, but taking amore holistic approach byconsidering a wide range ofenvironmental and social impactsof new build properties.

Offering unrivalled technicalperformance along with excellenteco-credentials, the BREEAMcompliant Russell Envirotile wasdeveloped by a seasonedexperienced roofer over a fouryear period in association withWolverhampton University andthe Green Roof Tile Company andit provides a technically advancedalternative to traditional roofingmaterials. BREEAM is the world'sforemost environmentalassessment method and rating

system for buildings and sets thestandard for best practice insustainable building design, construction and operation.

The precision design andmanufacture fully utilises thelatest in recycled materialstechnology, which ensures everytile meets the highest standards.

The Russell Envirotile’s lightweight (just 720g) means they canbe transported efficiently, thusreducing transport costs andcarbon footprint. They are alsomuch easier to handle, being upto 25% quicker to fit thantraditional roofing products andcan be cut with a handsaw ratherthan requiring a petrol saw againlessening its environmentalimpact.

They provide a viable alternativeto flat roofing as they can be usedon pitches as low as 12.5 degrees, and with each tile interlockingwith the adjacent tiles in eightplaces, the roof’s integrity acts asa whole so no individualtile can easily dislodge. The Russell Envirotilealso comes with a 25year guarantee againstlamination and decay. The product has beendesigned not only fordomestic new build butis also expected to beparticularly attractive topublic sector buildprojects and social

housing. Specifically where localauthorities require the relevantCode for Sustainable Homesstandards to be met as a conditionof planning consent, for examplein the case of the new eco townapplications.

This is the latest product fromRussell Roof Tiles, who deliver agrowing range of innovativeleading products for housebuilders and commercial projects.

Andrew Hayward ManagingDirector at Russell Roof Tilescomments; “Despite a verychallenging construction sector, not helped by the global bankingcrisis, there are still opportunitiesfor UK manufacturers willing toinvest and innovate. It isimperative that manufacturers oftraditional construction materialsrespond to changing marketdevelopments and look at thechallenge of sustainable roof tiles.”

Sound School DesignThe Four Dwellings Primary School inBirmingham, built as part of theGovernment’s Building Schools for theFuture programme, was designed byarchitects dRMM. It is constructed with arange of materials that not only express itsprefabricated engineered timberconstruction but complement aestheticallyand contribute to student comfort andsuperior teaching performance. Forexample, extensive use has been made ofTroldtekt ceiling tiles in the study areasand library which need to be quiet, calmand healthy as well as all the classrooms,in the play areas and sports hall which istraditionally very noisy. The panels werechosen as they offer several benefitsincluding high sound absorption, highdurability, natural breathability, low costlife cycle performance and sustainability.

Designed from the inside out, the schoolfocuses on the typical day of the studentwith a determination to extend learningboth to internal informal learning zones aswell as to the outdoors. TELLING LAUNCHES ECO INTERNAL

INSULATION FOR EXTERIOR WALLS

Homatherm from Telling is a superior internalinsulation material made from wood fibre which has excellent vapour permeabilityand provides high levels of thermal insulation, heat protection and sound insulationfor optimum energy saving. It is ideal for the thermal upgrading of exterior wallswhich are solid with no cavities.

Launched this month is a new internalinsulation made from naturalmaterials designed for solid exteriorwalls, from Telling Lime Products.

Homatherm is a superior insulationmaterial made from wood fibre whichhas excellent vapour permeability andprovides high levels of thermalinsulation, heat protection and soundinsulation for optimum energy saving. It is ideal for the thermal upgrading ofexterior walls which are solid with nocavities.

Manufactured as slabs in three differentthicknesses of 40, 60 and 80mm,Homatherm is made in a singlethickness process, obviating thelamination layer glues that exist in someother systems, which can have adetrimental effect upon the true vapourpermeability.

Application of Homatherm wood fibreinternal insulation is particularlyappropriate for pre 1900’s buildingswhere their solid walls usually ‘breathe’through the lime mortar. Indeed, thethermal insulation of solid walls ofheritage buildings creates an enormouschallenge as external overcladding isnot possible as it would affect theexisting architectural aesthetic.

Here, Homatherm wood fibreinsulation slabs can be appliedinternally, and are the ideal solutionensuring natural ‘breathability’ andthrough-wall performance.

The permeability of the Homathermwood fibre slabs minimises interstitialcondensation in the existingconstruction to a level that enables thelime mortar to hydroscopically extractthese as vapour, thereby preventingdamage to the structure. Telling Limesupply their UNILIT range of naturalhydraulic lime mortars for wallfinishing.

With DIN approval, Homatherm is anecologically sound product using CO2neutral raw materials, free of chemicalsand with practically no emissions ofVOC and formaldehyde. It thuspromotes a healthy and comfortableliving environment particularly suitablefor allergy sufferers. Also wheninstalling the product, it is bothlightweight and hazard-free inhandling.

Further information on the newHomatherm wood fibre insulation isavailable from Telling Lime on 01902797700, email [email protected] or byvisiting the company’s website atwww.telling.co.uk

Single source solution forcompliance with new loftinsulation guidance

New requirements on loft insulation arereinforcing the importance of ventilatingthe loftspace to ensure optimum energyand CO2 savings are achieved.

Through developments at Glidevale, theUK’s leading roof ventilation supplier, contractors have a simplified solution to

achieving the demands, which are laid outin ‘General Requirements & Guidance forthe Installation of Loft Insulation’,published by CITB-Construction Skills.

The document says ventilation in theroofspace shall be the equivalent of acontinuous 10mm gap at low level, achieved either by adding soffit or fasciaventilation, or slate or tile ventilators; athigh level, the equivalent of a continuous5mm gap should also be considered. Italso requires that if no ventilation exists, then it should be provided, in line withBS5250.

But the document goes beyond layingdown requirements: it further emphasisesthe need for quality workmanship, toensure insulation is properly installed anddoes not block the ventilation.

Contemporary ComfortIN LISTED PROPERTY

Nestling in the beautiful Oxfordshire countryside, sections of this magnificentthree-storey Grade II* Listed building date back to the 16th century.

Amongst the many outstanding featuresare two imposing Tudor fireplaces and abeautifully preserved 1614 Jacobeanstaircase. The main part of the building, however, is 18th century and features longwide halls traversing each floor, helping tocreate a house of majestic proportion. Thelandscaped grounds are enclosed by anequally impressive Grade II* listed wallfeaturing a number of late medieval Gothicwindows and an original window fromBrasenose College’s chapel of the sameperiod.

In recent years the property has featured inepisodes of TV’s “Midsomer Murders” and“Amazing Grace” (a biographical dramafilm about the campaign against slave tradein the British Empire, led by WilliamWilberforce).

The house, its groundsand numerousoutbuildings includingextensive stabling, hasbeen a family home forthe past 42 years. Withspiralling fuel costs, theowners felt the timehad come to investigateways of providing awarm and draught freehome, particularly forwhen their younggrandchildren visit.Serious considerationwas, therefore, given tothermally insulating thewindows.

The owners, asmembers of the HistoricHouses Association, frequently attend Association sponsoredconferences. “It was here we met EnergyConsultant Jonathan Clarke, one of thatday’s speakers. Following the conferencewe engaged Mr. Clarke to producerecommendations on our behalf. Theresulting report included particularreference to Selectaglaze’s secondaryglazing systems and their experienceworking with listed buildings. And, ofcourse, secondary glazing is an optionapproved by English Heritage. Initially, wehad the windows on the ground floor

treated and immediately realised what adifference secondary glazing made to ourcomfort. They are also very unobtrusiveand beautifully tailor-made, so we decidedto do the top floors as well”.

A total of forty-seven sash and casementwindows needed to be treated, many withexisting wooden shutters which were to beretained. It was also essential that thewindows remained fully operational tofacilitate cleaning and maintenance, without introducing additional sightlines. To accommodate this exacting briefSelectaglaze recommended a number ofstyles including their very slim sectionedSeries 47 Hinged Casements - a rangedesigned specifically for “heritage”buildings – together with their Series 20Slimline Vertical Sliding units.

Several rooms feature17th and 18th centuryoak and ash panellingwith window framespainted to match. Toblend imperceptiblywith this internaldécor, Selectaglazesupplied secondaryglazing finished in abrown PolyesterPowder paint.

All units were glazedwith 4mm toughenedlow emissivity glass toprovide the very bestthermal insulation.

Theatre producer Vanessa FordRobbins and her partner NikHuddy have been restoringLonghurst Lodge, a Victorian gatelodge nestled on the boundaries ofa country estate in Surrey.

In a programme featuring thetransformation project, which wasaired on January 10, RestorationMan presenter George Clarke wason hand to help, advise andsupport the couple during theprocess. Before Vanessa and Nik startedtheir labour of love on the project– which saw them doing all thebuild work themselves and living

in a caravan on site during winter- the Grade II listed property hadbeen derelict for nearly 50 years.

Vanessa said: “We chose SandtexTrade X-treme X-posure for theexterior of the lodge, after carefullyinvestigating what would workbest for the building.

“We wanted to do everythingpossible to protect the propertyfrom local conditions, including theclimate and damp.

Originally we had used a limewash, but that was very difficultfor us to continue with, particularly

with issues over the applicationaround the chimney areas. As aresult, we started to look intoalternatives and were impressed bythe qualities of X-treme X-posure.After checking with our localpreservation officer on itssuitability, we decided to apply theproduct - and the end result lookssuperb. We feel Sandtex Trade X-treme X-posure offers the lodge thevery best possible protection, particularly the heraldic plastermotifs on the walls, which are avery important feature of thebuilding. These have been coatedwith X-treme X-posure to preserveand protect them, and then

coloured lime wash has beenapplied for a decorative finish.”

A highly-durable, smooth masonrypaint, Sandtex Trade X-treme X-posure provides the best possibleprotection against weatherexposure for the long term, and issuitable for use on most exteriormasonry surfaces and exteriorgrade building boards.

It provides excellent opacity, comesin a variety of colours - and hasbeen awarded a British Board ofAgrément Certificate for up to 15years’ durability.

The product’s time-proven, trustedformula combines style withprotection against acid rain, snowand frost, damaging UV rays, atmospheric pollution and adverseweather conditions, as well as seaand salt spray.

It also includes anti-carbonationproperties to protect concrete, aswell as a hydrophobic formulationproviding a highly water resistantfinish that enables dirt to washaway.

Duravit AG has again demonstrated its designcredentials. From a total of 3,011 entries, not justone but three of the bathroom outfitter’s productswere earmarked for distinction by the jury of theiF product design award. The OpenSpace showerenclosure, the St.Trop steam shower and theSensoWash® Starck C shower-toilet are all winnersof this high-profile design award.

For 60 years, the iF Award has been a recognisedtrademark for outstanding design all over the worldand has become established as a symbol foroutstanding design achievements at internationallevel. The jury’s criteria included design quality, workmanship, choice of materials, degree ofinnovation, environmental compatibility, functionality and universal design aspects.

“We are delighted that the independent jury of theiF Award has assessed and honoured our productsaccording to these demanding criteria", says FrankRichter, chairman of the board of Duravit AG. “Inparticular, the fact that these Duravit products, which are also technologically sophisticated, havewon this award is again testimony to ourinnovative strength in developing new solutionsfor the bathroom.”

OpenSpace, designed by EOOS, is an elegantsolution for a shower enclosure that is only therewhen actually needed – namely when taking ashower. Afterwards, the two doors are simply"folded away”. This not only creates a morespacious feel, but it also enables greater freedom ofmovement in the bathroom – a particular benefitfor small bathrooms.

St.Trop is a steam shower that is consistentlyreduced to the essentials. A simple rectangle, it hasa footprint of no more than one square metre. Whendesigning the steam shower, Philippe Starck wasinspired by a painting: the door is akin to a framesurrounding a large-scale painting. The motif is theperson taking a shower, resulting in a work ofnatural beauty.

For the first time, the SensoWash® Starck C shower-toilet seat combines premium design with thecomfort of a bidet integrated in the toilet. Theshower function is so discrete that it only becomesapparent when the toilet lid is lifted. All technicalcomponents have been miniaturised so theconnections for both water and electricity fitbetween the ceramic body and the seat withoutinterrupting the clear design lines.

This is the first time that a greywater system has been combinedwith a heat recovery system in theBritish market. The launch inPampisford, Cambridgeshire wastimed to coincide with theGovernment’s launch of the GreenDeal Scheme.

Scottish and Southern Energy(SSE) has recently started trials of the combined greywater and heat recovery system as part of the Isle ofWight’s Ecoisland project. WaterEvolution estimatesthat the reAqua+ will save up to 60,000 litres of water,3,000kWh of energy and up to one tonne of CO2 peryear for a family of 5, with payback estimated atbetween 3 and 7 years.

The reAqua+ collects greywater from the bath orshower, removes the heat and transfers it back to thecentral heating system. It then uses the cooled waterto flush toilets. The unit fits comfortably into a wallcavity and can feed multiple toilets making it idealfor new-builds and refurbishment projects. ThereAqua+ gives a twofold saving on CO2 emissionsand is Green Deal eligible, helping it maximise thesustainability of a building without compromisingthe end user’s lifestyle.

Ian Marchant, CEO of SSE said: “The reAqua+ systemis a real breakthrough in water and energy recovery.By continuing to throw away hot water in our homeswe are wasting two valuable assets. WaterEvolution

now has a solution and one thatcan make a cost effectivecontribution to the sustainabilityof new and existing buildingstock.”

Stephen Bates, CEO ofWaterEvolution added: “With anincreasing drive to reduce waterconsumption it makes more senseto reuse water rather than rationit. People don’t want to have low-flow showers and low-flush toiletsthat don’t really work when theycan reduce water consumptioneven more by recycling showerand bath water instead.”

Tony Robison of SEP, the UK’sleading growth equity investmentfirm, and shareholder in

WaterEvolution through its Environmental EnergiesFund commented: “WaterEvolution offers an excitingsolution to the key challenges of water recycling andreduction in energy usage. The combination of waterand energy savings offer compelling economic returnsfor property developers and users alike.”

WaterEvolution officially launched the reAqua+ on29 January at the Ridgeons’ ‘Green Light Centre’ inPampisford. The event complemented the launch ofthe Government’s Green Deal. The unit is also ondisplay in WaterEvolution’s central London salesoffice at the Building Centre, Store Street.

Passivent launchesintelligent solution toefficient continuousventilationPassivent’s new, intelligentapproach to efficient ventilation isproven to deliver ‘Best Practice’for energy saving.

The company’s iMEV (intelligentMechanical Extract Ventilation)uses the established concept ofcontinuous mechanical extraction, but takes it into the 21st centurythrough employment of latesttechnology.

A combination of humiditysensitive extracts and choice ofcontrol levels ensures that indomestic dwellings, apartmentblocks or multi-occupancycommercial buildings (hotels, care

homes, student accommodation),the system constantly deliversappropriate, adequate ventilationwithout detriment and with noexcessive energy usage noroccupier input.

Further, regardless of operationrate the system delivers Best

Practice requirements as laiddown by the Energy Saving Trust.Passivent’s iMEV incorporateshumidity sensitive filaments asstandard in the non-adjustableextracts, which determine when, and how much, extraction isneeded. A choice of extracts andthree fan options enables precisetailoring to individual projectrequirements depending onventilation and/or occupantstrategy and ducting installationpreferences- iMEV, iMEV Localand iMEV Total.

Passivent iMEV delivers a ‘wholehouse’ approach, with ventilationremaining constant until relativehumidity (RH) increases, when itautomatically boosts airflow by upto 88%: more than twice aseffective than other MEV systems.

30 HEATING & RENEWABLE ENERGY www.mcdermottpublishing.com Jan/Feb 2013

‘Green’ Wood Burneravailable in 100different coloursAccording to the energy regulatorOfgem, Britain risks running outof energy generating capacitywithin three years and will relymore heavily on imported gas, making price rises more likely. Itis no surprise that faced with animminent threat of power outagesand rocketing prices of oil, gas andelectricity, UK consumers areready for an alternative heatingsource that is both renewable andsustainable. So say themanufacturers of Pyroclassic Fires, wood burning stoves developedin New Zealand to combat airpollution, and now available inthe UK.

Wood-fuelled domestic heatingproducts are growing inpopularity in the UK. Over onemillion tonnes of wood fuel areburned here every year asconsumers realise the benefit of

utilising an affordable heatingfuel which is not reliant onelectricity or gas while alsobeing a low carbon option. Ina power outage, boilers willnot work and pellet stoveswill shut down but a woodstove will provide heat and, insome cases, even a cookingsurface too.A Pyroclassic fire is one of thecleanest, most efficient woodfires you can buy. As well as

providing a reliable, renewablesource of heat, you can also usethe cook top plate to boil thekettle, slow cook a casserole, roasta joint and even bake bread.

Pyroclassic’s eye-catching andunconventional design sets it apartfrom the rest of the wood burnerson the market. Its exterior powdercoated panels are available in 100different colours and, onceinstalled, if you are updating yourdécor or fancy somethingdifferent, it is easy to change thecolour of the interchangeableexterior panels.

Pyroclassic is available as either adry stove or a boiler stove with a‘wetback’ system, which provideshot water. It retails from around£1700 exc VAT, with VAT of just5% payable on the installation ofthe wetback version. A number ofaccessories are available includingtwo sizes of raised hearth andwoodbins and a cook top dutchoven.

The demand for sanitary hot water is perpetual, which

is why I can’t talk about heating without mentioning

hot water. For hotels, restaurants, care homes and

hospitals hot water is an absolute necessity. When I see

just how much is being spent on water heating, it’s

obvious that there needs to be a change in the way

systems are used.

The economic climate is keeping running costs high on

the agenda. Coupled with increasing Government

pressure on organisations to become more sustainable,

manageable changes that have a tangible environmental

and economic impact should be prioritised. To achieve

this I believe it is necessary to look at a ‘big picture’

view towards energy management to ensure facilities

and equipment works together.

A lack of knowledge about energy costs is fuelling

inactivity when it comes to future-proofing buildings

through energy efficient technology investment. If

All facilities cost money torun – that’s a fact that can’tbe denied. What reallyamazes me is the number ofbusinesses that waste moneythrough poor energymanagement.

Building owners andoccupiers need to implementheating solutions that willensure the most cost effectiveoption is utilised.

Replacing equipment shouldbe viewed as an opportunityto reduce energy use and savemoney. The tools are there, itjust needs to be plannedeffectively.

Comment from Des Franklin, EuropeanSales Manager at Mitsubishi Heavy

Industries AC Division (Mitsubishi Heavy)

customers are unaware how much energy they are

using, how much they are spending and which facilities

are the biggest contributors, they will be far less

inclined to review their current systems. I feel that it is

the responsibility of heating professionals to educate

and inform customers on the benefits of energy efficient

solutions.

The challenge in the past was that products which

supported carbon reduction and lower energy use were

compromised in terms of performance. Thankfully,

things have changed. Modern technology has

responded to environmental concerns by providing

solutions that offer exceptional efficiency ratings. And,

with higher efficiency, comes lower running costs. It’s

time for buildings to be run with the future in mind.

THE NEXTGENERATIONOF ENERGYSAVINGOUTDOOR LIGHTING

Timeguard’s new LED NightEyes are acompletely new concept in PIR lightingdesign. Small and remarkably powerful, these floodlights are compact and stylishenough to be used anywhere, whether aseffective security lighting or attractivecourtesy lighting.

The LED NightEyes giveinstant brightness, justlike halogens, but areunder half the size anduse a fraction of the power.

Available in black or white, the twinversions deliver the equivalent of 200Wlighting using a maximum of 16W (2 x8W) of LED power, and so promiserunning costs a tenth of a comparablehalogen output. The single LED versionsoffer up to 100W from a single 8W LED.

And now super-powerful 32W versionshave been added to the range. With anoutput equivalent to around 230Whalogen, with only 14% of the runningcosts, they are powerful enough for anylighting challenge, without compromiseon design.

With a detectionrange of 10m thefloodlights can bepanned and tilted toensure optimumcoverage. Anadjustable PIRdetector and bothlux level and on-timeadjustments are other refinements of thenew range, as would be expected fromTimeguard.

With a low operating temperature ofLED, these lights are equally suited forindoor and outdoor use.

Advance interest in these energy savingfloodlights has been unprecedented. They are available in wholesalers now.

On 2nd October 2008 the Health & SafetyExecutive issued a safety alert to raiseawareness of the potential dangers fromcertain types of flues connected to gas-fired central heating installations in someproperties (particularly, but notexclusively, a large number of flats andapartments completed since about 2000)that may not have been installed properly,or may have fallen into disrepair.

To comply with The Gas Safety(Installation and Use) Regulations(GSIUR), a flue must be visibly inspectedthroughout its route, but if built into aceiling void, the ability to do so isimpaired unless inspection panels are partof the construction.

In November 2010 the Health and SafetyExecutive issued new guidelines and aLandlord had until 31st December 2012 toarrange for inspection hatches for suchflues. After 1st January 2013 any gasengineer working on a system where thecomplete flue is not visible will advise theLandlord that the system is ‘at risk’ inaccordance with the Gas Industry UnsafeSituations Procedure (GIUSP) and with theowner's permission will turn off the gassupply to the boiler so it cannot be used.

Although the gas boiler and flue may becondemned this does not mean that thesystem needs to be condemned. Byinstalling an Electric Boiler the homeownerwill benefit from the same controllabilityand flexibility that their gas heatingsystem offered. As electric boilers are silentin operation and do not require flueing itcan be located in almost any room withinthe property.

Furthermore, as there is no Annual SafetyInspection required on electric boilersthere will be significant cost savings toPrivate and Social Landlords. With electricboiler outputs from 4kW to 14.4kw onsingle phase electricity and 3-phase 24kWand 36kW outputs, The Electric HeatingCompany (EHC) can offer a centralheating solution to most properties. Thereis a misconception in the market thatelectric heating is expensive to operatehowever EHC offer impartial advice onthe best electricity tariffs within the UK toensure that running costs are kept to anaffordable level.

Issues withconcealed flues ?

EHC HAVE THE SOLUTION

The introduction of fan-flued gas appliances in the mid1990s allowed gas central heating boilers to be installedaway from external walls. This meant that builders could

design new-build and refurbishment properties withboilers being installed on internal walls to make better

use of the available space. The flues to these boilers were,in some cases, routed through voids in the ceiling space

(and through stud walls) between properties above.

People are failing to realise that simplyreplacing boilers like-for-like when theycome to the end of life won’t deliver thefull potential to provide a sustainable,long-term improvement. Experts atSustain, one of the UK’s leadingsustainability companies, has proven justthat when working with Great YarmouthBorough Council to carry out communalboiler room audits (CoBRAs) servingsocial housing.

Sustain found that the boilers wereinefficient compared to modernreplacements and higher than necessary gasconsumption had occurred in order tosatisfy actual heating demand, but simplyreplacing the boilers themselves would notaddress all the factors contributing to pooroverall system efficiency.

Sustain identified energy and cost savingsof 20 per cent by replacing the old systemwith new condensing boilers, boiler controlsand variable speed pumps. Even biggersavings of 35 per cent could be made if theheating refurbishment budget could beextended out to the heating distributionnetwork, allowing pipework and emitters

to be replaced, as well as a completely newcommunal system will enable moderncondensing boilers to work at lowertemperatures and provide maximumsavings.

Kevin Boniface, Low Carbon BuildingsManager at Sustain, said: “It pays to makethe extra investment now, addressinginefficiencies across the entire communalsystem in one refurbishment and providingresidents with appropriate training on howto use individual controls in the properties.”Mark Kemp, Housing Finance and AssetManager at Great Yarmouth CommunityHousing, said: “Sustain provided a veryefficient and comprehensive review of ourexisting communal heating installationsincluding site visits and data analysis ofenergy consumption. The resulting COBRAstudy reports provided robustrecommendations for renewal of thoseinstallations along with other measures tominimize energy consumption on thosesites by over 20%.”

£550 million fund toprovide renewableenergy for businessesSolarlec has been announced as anapproved supplier for the SiemensEnergy Efficiency FinancingScheme, which is supported bythe Carbon Trust.

Team building activities have long beenused as a means to improve companyproductivity and efficiency, and yet thebenefits extend further, reaching acompany’s workforce, the widercommunity, and those in other countries.

Funding sustainable initiativesCOINS Foundation, a charitableorganisation, arranges the largestfundraising teambuilding activities in theconstruction industry which over the pastdecade have raised £2.5 million for projectsworldwide. The Foundation is based on thepremise that with any form of privilegecomes responsibility to give back to thoseless fortunate in the developing world, andat home. The Foundation has beensuccessful in funding a range of socialprojects and securing the support of agrowing number of companies year onyear.

The fundraising events also provide anopportunity to network with industrycolleagues; key players brought togetherover the years include Taylor Wimpey, KierGroup, Vinci, Skanska, and Osborne. Thepast ten years has seen 130 companies and3,000 people have participated walking atotal of 72,000 miles.

A once in a lifetime experience COINS 24 Peaks Challenge, which takesplace on June 8th & 9th, is a new initiativepushing teams to the limits both physicallyand mentally.

Small teams trek through the Lake District, conquering 24 peaks, each over 2,400 feet, with a total 13,000 feet height gain, covering32.5 miles. All of this in 24 hours spreadover two days! It sounds tough, but it isachievable for anyone with an averagefitness level, by following the Foundation’s10 week training programme.

The route follows Cumbria’s best mountainridge walks, including Red Pike, ScafellPike, Hevellyn and Great Gable. Once overthe finish line, teams are rewarded with acelebratory reception and presentationceremony. This is also an opportunity toshare photos, video diaries, and tales.

Gemma Jones, quantity surveyor from KierConstruction, took part in a small pilotevent last year and would encourage othercompanies to do so. She said, “Despite thechallenging conditions, we battled theelements, had a wonderful time and passedthe finish line with a smile!

“We certainly felt a strong sense ofachievement having completed thechallenge, not only as individuals andcollectively as a team, but also in terms ofhelping others and the sense of realisingthat our efforts have helped fund essentialprojects in Africa and the UK,” she added.

This year 40 teams will take part, eachpledging a minimum of £5,000. 100 per centof the money raised will go directly to twoprojects; the construction of a secondaryschool in Kawama, Zambia to educate 1000students and the Cookie Bar in the UK: asocial enterprise helping children withlearning disabilities to engage in businessand achieve independence.
