A flavour of Kenyas Wildlife&Community based Conservation

We have tailored this itinerary for those who wish to experience wildlife in Kenya as wellcommunity based and wildlife conservation giving you a taste of a true Kenyan adventure touchingsome of the prime game viewing spots.

This itinerary will give you a life time experience of accompanying experienced trekkers and armedrangers on a short anti poaching patrol within the Mara Game Reserve. The patrol takes you topoaching hot spots along wildlife trails where snares are placed to trap wildlife for both commercialand subsistence use.

You will also experience a community based project in the Tsavo area where a school will be visitedas part of a conservation programme to see how students and parents learn and supportconservation activities to preserve their heritage. Female students selected on merit are thensponsored for higher education and given a chance to enhance their career, where in normalcircumstances they would be denied the opportunity due to lack of funds and are less privilegedcompared to their male counterparts. It is here that you will be able to plant a tree in your name aspart of the reforestation programme to counter the global warming effects.

Part of the proceeds collected on this safari will be donated back to the conservation programmes.

After an enlightening experience, proceed for a short game drive and stop over for picnic lunch at MdandaRock, a scenic location within Tsavo East National Park and where you are guaranteed a breathtakingview of the Great Plains below.

Mdanda Rock has a historical background where in the early days of barter trade, two communities of Kenya, namely theKamba and Taita used to meet to exchange goods. The Taita brought strips of dried meat whereas the Kamba brought in saltto trade. Hence the name Mdanda which actually means Strips of dried meat. It is a great point to view the water catchmentarea below where you are most likely to view some elephants coming to have a refreshing drink to cool down in the scorchingTsavo heat

Short game drive afterwards en-route to the lodge. Spend the rest of your evening at leisure. Meals andovernight at VOI WILDLIFE LODGE (FB)

Day 5: Tsavo East National Park to Tsavo West National ParkSpoil yourself to an early breakfast at the lodge before proceeding on to Tsavo West National Park. Enjoya game drive en-route to your lodge with a visit to the famous Roaring Rocks & Mzima Springs.

Roaring Rocks are named after the buzz of the Cicadas that inhabit them. It is a great scenic point in Tsavo West where youcan sit at the look out post from where you can watch game in the deep valley below and it is not unusual to see a herd ofelephants moving through the bush. On a clear day, you can also catch a fantastic view of Mt. Kilimanjaro on one side ofRoaring Rocks. It is an eerie feeling to sit on top of the world and, at certain seasons of the year, to hear the wind rushingpast the rock-face, making a roaring sound.

Rain falls on the Chyulu Hills (48kms away) and seeps through the porous volcanic ash and collects to emerge at Mzima asclear, sparkling water, forming the Mzima Springs. The beauty of Mzima lies in the extraordinary contrast between the clearwater and the surrounding lava dust; the profusion of green palms & shady trees in the midst of the wilderness in Tsavo. It ishome of many animals who live in and by the water, a welcome oasis in a desert of dust. Hippos and crocodiles can be seenfrom a wooden platform built to overlook the pools, and there is a short walk where you can stroll to a glass-sided tank.

Tsavo West, the more famous of the two National Parks, lies to the west of the Nairobi Mombasa road, equidistantbetween Nairobi & Mombasa, and is painted on a sprawling canvas of endless skies, emerald hills, liquid lava flows, palm- fringed rivers, teeming wildlife and sparkling oasis set against the unforgettable backdrop of mile upon mile of cloud-shadowed African savannah.

The sounds and noisesheard on the hill have been given a scientific explanation that they are made by wind whistling through a tall narrow cone, formed by thrown-up splashes of lava.
