    4 Slip the original stitch (st) off theleft-hand needle, keepingthe new stitch (st) on theright-hand needle.

    5To knit a row, repeat steps 1 to 4until all stitches (sts)have been transferredfrom left-hand needle

    to right-hand needle. Turn the work bytransferring the needle with stitches (sts) into your left hand to knit the next row.3 Draw the yarn through this original stitch (st)

    which forms a new stitch (st)on right-hand needle.

    Casting On

    1 Make a slip knot: Loop the yarn asshown and slip needle underthe lower strand of the loop.

    2 Pull the yarn end attached to the ballof yarn to tighten theslip knot leaving theother end approx 4 ins[10 cm] long. Transferneedle to left hand.

    3 Insert the right-hand needle through slip knot and windyarn over right-hand needle.

    4 Place new loop on left-hand needle.(You now have 2 stitches(sts) on your left-handneedle).

    1Hold the needle with caston stitches (sts) in yourleft hand, and the loose yarnattached to the ball at theback of work. Insert right-

    2 Wind the yarn from left to right over the point ofthe right-hand needle.

    Cast off using knit stitch (knitwise) Knit the first 2 stitches (sts).*Using left-hand needle, lift first stitch (st) over second stitch (st) anddrop it off between points of the 2 needles. Knit the next stitch (st);repeat (rep) from * until all stitches (sts) from left-hand needle havebeen worked and only 1 stitch (st) remains on the right-hand needle.Cut yarn (leaving enough to sew in end) and thread cut end throughstitch (st) on needle. Draw yarn up firmly to fasten off last stitch (st).

    Casting Off

    Cast off using purl stitch (purlwise) Purl first 2 stitches (sts). *Usingleft-hand needle, lift first stitch (st) over second stitch (st) and drop itoff needle. Purl next stitch (st); repeat (rep) from * securing the laststitch (st) as described for casting off knitwise.

    1With yarn at front ofwork, insert right-handneedle from right to leftthrough front of first stitch(st) on left-hand needle.

    2Wind yarn aroundright-hand needle.Pull yarn throughstitch (st).

    3Slip original stitch (st) off needle.Repeat (rep) these steps until allstitches (sts) on left-hand needle havebeen transferred onto right-handneedle to com plete one row of purling.

    Increasing and Decreasing

    Increase 1 stitch (st) in next stitch (st)Work into front and back of stitch (st) as follows: Knit stitch (st), then beforeslipping it off needle, twist right-handneedle behind left-hand needle and knitagain into back of loop. Slip original stitch(st) off needle. There are now 2 stitches(sts) on right-hand needle made fromoriginal stitch.

    K2tog Decrease Knit 2 stitches (sts) together(tog) through the front ofboth loops.

    P2tog Decrease Purl 2 stitches (sts) together(tog) through the frontof both loops.

    Learn to Crochet Instructions

    1Make a loop,then hookanother loopthrough it.

    1 Insert the hook into the work (2ndchain (ch) from hookon starting chain),*yarn over hook (yoh)and draw yarn throughthe work only.

    2 Yarn over hook (yoh) again anddraw the yarn throughboth loops on the hook.

    3 1 single crochet (sc) made. Insert hookinto next stitch: repeat(rep) from * in step 1.

    1Yarn over hook(yoh) and drawthe yarn through toform a new loopwithout tighteningup the previous one.

    2Tighten gentlyand slide theknot up to the hook. 2Repeat to formas many chains

    (ch) as required.Do not count theslip knot as a stitch.

    Insert hook into work(second chain from hook),yarn over hook (yoh) anddraw the yarn through boththe work and loop on hook in one movement.

    To join a chain ring with a slipstitch (sl st), insert hook intofirst chain (ch), yarn over hook(yoh) and draw through boththe work and the yarn on hookin one movement.

    This is the shortest crochet stitchand unlike other stitches is not usedon its own to produce a fabric. It isused for joining, shaping and wherenecessary carrying the yarn toanother part of the fabric for thenext stage.
