The environmental impacts o classical

oil pollution are well known largespills can result in the smothering o seabirds and marine lie, causing physicaldamage to marine habitats with toxicand bioaccumulative eects throughoutthe ood chain.

Marine lubricant spills and releases areusually smaller scale, more requent, butless obvious. The mixture o crude oilbase stocks and additives (up to 30% othe fnished products) result in persistent,bioaccumulative and toxic chemicalsentering the marine environment.

The eects can impact marineecosystems at all levels and result inchemicals working their way throughthe ood chain up to humans.

Each year, up to 224,000 tons ooil-based lubricants enter the worldsoceans, releasing potentially persistent,bioaccumulative and toxic chemicalsinto the marine environment.
