Echoes of Christmaspresented by Minnesota Monthly

Winter in Minnesota. Remember how it began this year with three inchesof sloppy snow on the Iron Range-on September 30? And nowDecember is the month of the long night, the thermometer restingperhaps for days at single digits. But December has its rewards: asunrise that turns windows into frosted canvases of a thousand shapes;a fresh dusting of snow looks as if diamonds had been thrown onto ourfields and trees. And the sky-only in this kind of cold do we see thispurity of blue.

Christmas, of course, is the great reward of the month. And the icing onthat cake is Christmas music. This program by the DWS offers familiarcarols in bright new arrangements, and brand new works that may oneday become old favorites. Welcome to Echoes of Christmas 20031

n, A CHRISTMAS CLASSIC

Quatre motets pour le temps de Noel Francis Poulenc

One day as a boy, Francis Poulenc dropped a few coins into a player-piano and was smitten by the sound that spun out. Lavished withlessons (his father was the head of Rhone-Poulenc, Europe's largestpharmaceutical conglomerate), he quickly mastered the piano and beganwriting his own music for it. In his twenties he became a Parisian piano-playing dandy, but in 1935, after the death of a dear friend, Poulenc wroteless for the piano and more for his favorite new 'instrument,' the choir. His Four Motets for Christmastime dates from 1951-52. Each motet isbarely three minutes long but is a little masterwork, full of Poulenc'saffection for these ancient texts. In order, they tell of the great mystery ofJesus' birth, the angels' annunciation to the shepherds, the Magi'swonderment, and the angels' song of joy.

m. CAROLS IN NEW DRESS

Christmas Lullaby Jeffrey Van

If you're of "a certain age" you'll remember LP records, and if you werebuying Christmas music in the 1980s you probably snapped up at leastone of the DWS' Christmas LPs on the Augsburg label. The turntablenever got better, or more use. For many of us, the vinyl was practicallysee-through and unlistenable when the DWS re-issued the Augsburgrecordings on CD a few years ago. How wonderful to get reacquaintedwith those pieces, none yielding more pleasure than Jeffrey Van'shauntingly beautiful Christmas Lullaby-which like many of his pieceswritten for the DWS show him to be a triply-talented man: guitarist, lyricist, and composer.

Christmas Lullaby

Lullaby, lullaby, sleep wondrous child to my lullaby.

Heaven's light radiantwithin the hay,All gathered here sing thy mystery,How can this babe the answer be?Yet hear the angels so surely say: "Here! Here's the One."

Lullaby, lullaby, sleep wondrous child to my lullaby.

Peaceful and still all around thy bed,Outside in darkness a world of dread,Rest thy head near us, 0 holy child,Stay, stay awhile.

Lullaby, lullaby, sleep wondrous child to my lullaby.

Selections from A Festival of Carols Frank Ferko

Frank Ferko, former DWS composer-in-residence, wrote his A Festival ofCarols last year for the Dale Warland Singers. The five texts come fromnineteenth-century American poets and hymn writers, and these twocarols conclude Ferko's set. "Do You Know" begins with all voicessinging a melody that will form the basis of a canon. The next time itcomes around the sopranos will start, followed a bar later by the altos;later, the tenors and basses join in and together they'll make the churchring. "Christmas Bells" begins with a Latin text (Glory to God in thehighest, and on earth peace) but then quickly shifts into the old hymntext, "I heard the bells on Christmas Day ... " In its original form, thathymn can be one of the stodgiest in the book-but Ferko sets a fireunderneath the words with a flickering harp accompaniment. By the end, when the Latin words come back, the choir is in big eight-part peals ofglory.

I. Do You Know the Song That the Angels Sang

Do you know the song that the angels sangOn that night in the long ago,When the heavens above with their music rangTill it echoed in the earth below?

Refrain:All glory in the highest,Peace on earth, goodwill to men,Glory in the highest,Peace, goodwill to men;Glory in the highest,Glory in the highest,Peace on earth, goodwill to men.

Do you know the song that the shepherds heardAs they watched o'er their flocks by night,When the skies bent down, and their hearts were stirredBy the voices of the angels bright?

Refrain

Do you know the story that the wisemen learnedAs they journeyed from the east afar,O'er a pathway plain, for there nightly burnedIn their sight a glorious guiding star?

Refrain

--Text by Abner P.Cobb (1854-1923)

And thought how, as the day had come,The belfries of all ChristiandomHad rolled alongThe unbroken songOf peace on earth, good-will to men!

rv THIS NIGHT

This Night (world premiere) John Muehleisen

DWS Composer-in-Residence John Muehleisen was inspired to write hislatest work, This Night, by poetry from a collection called CarminaGadelica, amply subtitled "Gaelic Songs and Hymns with IllustrativeNotes on Words, Rites and Customs, Dying and Obsolete; OrallyCollected in the Highlands and Islands of Scotland by AlexanderCarmichael." Carmichael (1832-1912) was a British civil servant whogathered and documented the oral poetry and song of, as he said, "ourdear lovable people." Many of the songs and poems he collected reflectthe unique forms and styles of Celtic Christianity, which combinesbeautiful images of nature found in early Celtic pagan traditions withChristian themes and songs for festivals throughout the year. Amongthese are a great number of songs for Advent and Christmas. Muehleisenwrites: "I wanted to create a celebratory Christmas work built aroundthe theme of the eve of the Nativity that started with a sort of mysticalopening and progressed to a joyful, dancelike conclusion. I also wantedto portray both the poignant and the festive aspects of the Nativity.

"In 'Invocation,' God is linked primarily to images of nature: the sun, themoon, the earth and stars, waters, land, and sky. These are interspersedwith images of the Nativity.

"'The First Miracle' is a fanciful and clearly apocryphal story about Maryand Joseph on their way to the census. The text underscores the specialrelationship between Mary and her 'Babe' and also emphasizes aconnection between Him and the natural world, which He can bend toHis will with a mere command, even from the womb."

17

Page 18: Echoes of Christmas, 6 December, 2003, Basilica of Saint

In explaining the third piece, "Christmas Hail," Muehleisen paraphrasesone of Carmichael's own notes from the original collection: Christmaschants were numerous and their recital common throughout Scotland.Formerly on Christmas Eve, bands of young men went from house tohouse and from townland to townland chanting Christmas songs. Theband was variously called song-men, Christmas lads, or Rejoicers. Theywere dressed loosely as clergy, wearing long shirts for surplices and verytall white hats. When they entered a dwelling, they invited a child to jointhem in the celebration. The child was called "Crist" (Christ) or"Cristean" (Little Christ). The assumed Christ was placed on a skin, andcarried three times round the fire by the head of the band while the song-men sang the "Christmas Hail." Homage and offerings and muchrejoicing were made to the symbolic Christ. The people of the house gavethe visitors bread, butter, and other eatables, on which they afterwardsfeasted.

This Night

I. Invocation

God of the moon, God of the sun,God of the globe, God of the stars,God of the waters, the land, and the skies,Who ordained to usthe King of promise.

It was Mary fair who wentupon her knee,It was the King of life who wentupon her lap,

Darkness and tearswere set behind,And the star of guidancewent up early.

II. The First Miracle

Joseph and Mary wentTo the numbering up,And the birds began chorusingIn the woods of the turtle-doves.

The two were walking the way,Till they reached a thick wood,And in the wood there was fruitWhich was as red as the rasp.

That was the timewhen she was great,

Then spoke Mary to Joseph,In a voice low and sweet:"Give to me of the fruit, Joseph,That I may quench my desire."And Joseph spoke to Mary,And the hard pain in his breast:

V. MODERN VOICES

Corpus Christi Carol Trond Kverno

Even though the words to Trond Kverno's Corpus Christi Carol areseveral hundred years old, there may be a glimmer of recognition inthem: Benjamin Britten used the same text in his classic A Ceremony ofCarols. The dark poem is filled with the imagery of God as a falcon, theVirgin Mary as a maid, and Christ as a mortally wounded knight.Particularly touching in Kverno's setting is the repeated refrain, heard thefirst time as a gentle soprano solo, then harmonized with increasingpassion.

Corpus Christi Carol

Lully, lulley, lully, lulley, the falcon hath borne my make away.He bare him up, he bare him down, he bare him into an orchard brown. In that orchard there was a bed, it was hanged with gold so red.And in that bed there lieth a knight, his wounds bleeding both day and night. And by that bedside there kneeleth a may,and she weepeth both night and day.And by that bedside there §tand@th fl stone:CORPUS CHRISTI written thereon.

--English medieval

Lux Aurumque Eric Whitacre

DWS audiences came to know the music of Eric Whitacre several seasonsago when the composer was only in his twenties. His Cloudburst andWater Night showed a young composer with an amazing gift for choralwriting-and now at the ripe old age of 33 he's expanding that promise. The beauty of Lux Arumque is how Whitacre tightens the screws to theinner harmonies, and then releases them. He took a novel approach to histext, choosing an English poem, then having it translated into Latin forthis setting.

Lux Aurumque

Light, warm and heavy as pure goldand the angels sing softlyto the newborn baby.

Lux,calida gravisque pura velut aurumet canunt angeli mollitermodo natum.

Abbie works for composer Libby Larsen and sings inthe alto section of the Dale Warland Singers. She currently studies withJudith Lang Zaimont.

Betinis writes of her newest piece: "Cedit, Hyems depicts the coming ofChrist into a troubled, confused world. The opening flute is meant tosound lonely and nearly slipping away. The chorus' entrance also shiftsuneasily, as if waiting for something. The flute realizes first the potentialof Christ's coming, encouraging the chorus in faster rhythms, louderdynamics, and soon the voices attempt to drive the world's coldnessaway in preparation for Christ. It is only after the voices accept love thatthe light begins to enter their lives and they shoo out the cold withrenewed energy: "Christ comes! Depart!"

Cedit, Hyems (Be Gone, Winter!)

Cedit, hyems, tua durities, Now, Winter, yieldeth all thy dreariness,The cold is over, all thy frozenness,All frost and fog,and wind's untowardness,All sullenness, uncomely sluggishness,Paleness and anger, grief and haggardness.

Culloton wrote a beautiful arrangement of My Shepherd Will Supply MyNeed for last month's An American Thanksgiving concert, and he returnsthis month with his first original composition for the DWS. Just as TrondKverno's piece may have seemed familiar to those acquainted withBritten's A Ceremony of Carols, Culloton's setting might have a similarring. Britten put this text (from an anonymous fifteenth-century poet) to aroaring tempo in his Ceremony. Culloton went the opposite way: at thefirst bar of the piece he simply tells the singers and guitarist that itshould be done "Gently," and the work unfolds as a lullaby.
