From the Chronicler

Greetings unto the populace of Summits! It is with great pride that we deliver unto you the new Echoes newsletter! It has been astray for awhile and its return comes with hope for a splendid and prosperous future. It is written for the populace of this grand Principality, by members of this Principality, with love for this Principality! It comes at a time of change. This month brings us the stepping down of our Alpine Highnesses and the Coronation of their Heirs. The seasons have changed and the waning of cold weather finds tournament and war in our midst. While it is true that change is everywhere in our lives, it is a tremendous comfort to know that there is a common constant here in the Summits; Every last one of us shares the love of The Dream.

Words from Their Royal Alpine Highnesses

Greetings Summits! It is with much sadness that we find Our first missive to you is also Our last as your Prince and Princess. We have enjoyed Our reign more than anyone who has not had the privilege of ruling the Summits can possibly imagine. We have had the opportunity to meet so many wonderful and talented people, both inside and outside of Our fair principality. We have been received warmly everywhere we have visited. The shire of Tymberhavene held an amazing Investiture for Us. The beauty and the magic of that hall is something We will never forget. Despite the distance and the weather, Our Coronet tournament in Southmarch was well attended. To see so many fighters and their consorts arrayed before Us was a truly inspirational sight. We are proud of our Heirs, Brogan and Johanna, and know they will serve you well. We look forward to placing the Coronets on their heads and taking a step back to see them grow and learn. Thank you for all that you do to make this the best Principality in the Knowne World! Brian and Acacia

Words from our Seneschal

Greetings Summits!!

I am happy to see the ECHOES up and running again. I hope that with this new format comes a new wave of interest in the inner workings of the Principality, and a new feeling of unity in our fair Principality!

I would like to extend heartfelt congratulations to HE Brogan and HE Johanna for Brogan’s victory in the Coronet list. I look forward to working with them during their reign.

June will bring change to our principality. Their alpine Highness Brian and Acacia will end their reign and the Heirs will begin. I wish Brian and Acacia luck and long life as they embark on new adventures. It has been a joy to serve under your reign.

We need officers!!

Part of the joy of this game is the generosity of the populace. It is my sincere hope to see this generosity pointed in the direction of service to the principality. In serving we make this game easier for others, we preserve tradition, we begin new traditions, and we allow others to continue to enjoy events and activities all over the Principality.

There are currently officers who have served this principality well past their term of office. I thank these individuals for their dedication and sacrifice. I ask all members of the populace to consider serving, not only at events, but as branch and regional officers.

Looking for deputy; a couple of people have talked to her. Recruitment plans for offices: a lot of offices are open, a lot of tired officers, and a lot of offices coming open in 2010. A lot of offices are already proactive, but we can always do more. Lindis would like to see a Summits Officers’ Retreat – looking for a volunteer to autocrat, looking for a space and date; hoping for a central area – Roseburg area. It will be paid for by the principality funds. Would like to cover SCA policies and procedures, conflict resolution. Brainstorm on how principality runs, some specific officer classes. Need contingency deputies. There is a difference between contingency deputy and a person who will replace you: a contingency deputy is there in case of emergency. Everyone needs to apply for consideration for an office. Please cc Kingdom officer and Coronet and principality seneschal on quarterly.

June 7, 1099: Siege of Jerusalem begins

In this climax of the First Crusade, the Christian army encamped before the city and began the siege that was to result in the capture of the city more than a month later.

June 23, 1314: The Battle of Bannockburn

This significant battle helped the Scots regain independence from England and secured the throne of Scotland for Robert the Bruce.

During a performance of Shakespeare's Henry VIII, the thatched roof of the original Globe Theatre was set aflame by cannon fire and the building burned to the ground. Shakespeare himself was in Stratford-on-Avon at the time. The theater would be rebuilt in the following year.

Chardewardon

While a related recipe, Chardquynce, (Chardewardon) is more like a fruit mousse, this version turns out much more like a custard. It is very reminiscent of pumpkin-pie filling, but lighter and slightly less sweet. As shown in the photo, it's excellent when topped with snowe.

4 pears 1 cup white wine 1/2 cup sugar

4 egg yolks 1 tsp. cinnamon 1/2 tsp. ginger

Peel and core the pears. Cut into small pieces and place in a sauce pan along with white wine. Bring to a boil, and simmer until pears are soft - about 15 minutes. Allow to cool and then grind with mortar and pestle (or in food processor). Mix with remaining ingredients in a saucepan. Heat until it boils and becomes very thick - it will resemble oatmeal in texture. Serve warm or cold.

To Make Snowe

• 1 cup cream

• 1 egg

• 1 Tbsp. sugar

• 1 tsp. rose water

Separate egg, discarding yolk. Stir egg white in a large bowl. Add cream, sugar, and rose water. Whisk until mixture will not drip out of whisk. Strain to remove whey if necessary. Serve with wafers or as topping.

Halatafl

The game Halatafl is known from at least as early as the 14th century, and it is mentioned in Grettis saga. It probably originated in Scandinavia, as a variant of Tafl. In fact, Halatafl is still played in

Scandinavia with rules similar to Tafl; see below. Edward IV of England is known to have purchased

two foxes and 26 hounds to form two sets of Marelles, believed to be Fox and Hounds. As Fox and

Geese, the game was a favorite pastime of Queen Victoria.

Halatafl means "tail board", in Old Norse, and "tail" presumably refers to a fox' tail. As in Grettis saga,

rävspelet (modern Swedish for "the Fox game") is still played with holes and pegs.

Halatafl is the smallest of the Tafl games, and the rules go as such:

The players take thirteen (13) pieces of one color, and one (1) piece of another. The thirteen are known

as the geese and are arranged as shown above. The fox of course is the other piece and is placed on any

vacant space on the board. The pieces

may move along a row in any direction (except diagonal) to the next point. The fox may jump a

goose,"killing" it and removing that piece from play. More than one goose may be jumped in one move,

as done in Checkers. The geese cannot jump the fox, but instead try to immobilize him in a corner. If the

Fox cannot move, he loses, but if he can "kill" enough geese, they will be unable to corner him making

the fox the winner.

What does it take to be an officer?

Being an officer in the SCA is a very important way that you can contribute to the society. Without its officers, the SCA would cease to exist.

The SCA is a 501 (c3) nonprofit organization. In order to keep this status certain federal requirements must be met. The officers of the SCA help to insure that these

requirements are met at all levels of the organization. Local or branch officers assist in the day to day functioning of our groups. In these positions officers will help to

organize activities, recruit new members, teach others in the area of interest, maintain files that detail what activities that the branch participates in and compiles reports to send to their superiors at principality or Kingdom. The Branch officers are

a vital part of the SCA.

Branch officers A branch office needs to be willing to learn about their respective area. You do not need to be an expert in Arts and Science to become an excellent A&S minister. This

is a great way to learn about your area of interest. This person should be willing to contact resources throughout the area to come to the branch and teach classes,

encourage others to go to focused events and organize social nights to work on projects in the respective area. A branch officer should be organized and a good

communicator. Branch officers should be willing to have their contact information published in the local newsletter and on the website. Branch officers must have a telephone; preferably all officers will have email access. Branch officers are often

the first contact with newcomers in the SCA. Be friendly, welcoming and learn as much as you can about your area and the Society.

Regional officers (Kingdom, Principality level) Officers at this level manage others. There is less contact on a daily basis with the

populace. Primarily in this position a regional officer will mentor and train branch officers, compile reports and other information and write quarterly reports to their

superiors on the status o the region, answer questions, maintain regional files, attend Regional meetings and assist branch officers in recruiting replacements and organizing special activities. A person in this position must be extremely organized,

professional, be willing to have their contact information published in newsletters and on websites, be a good communicator, be willing to learn about the area in

question, be willing to serve as a mediator, be willing to speak to newcomers about their area and the society, encourage others, follow Kingdom and Corpora laws and policies. An officer at a regional level must have reliable phone and email access.

Being an officer in the SCA can be fun and very rewarding. It is, like any job,

moderately time consuming and often can be hard work. It can also be a great opportunity to meet people, to contribute to this game and help to make it the fun place we spend our time.

Greetings unto the Populace of the Summits. I would like to introduce myself. I am Rhiannon

de Clare and am the current Preceptor of Pages for the Principality of the Summits. I am very

excited to announce that the Summits now has a College of Pages program and that I am

working on getting things started as this is a brand new office. I would also take this time to

thank Their Alpine Highnesses, Brian and Acacia, and Principality Chatelaine Lindis, for helping

me to get this started.

For those of you who are unfamiliar with the College of Pages, it is a program for young adults

ages 12-17. It is our belief that youths should not have to wait until they are adults to enjoy

the benefits of the SCA and should receive the same opportunities for learning and sense of

belonging. Our fundamental goal is to provide opportunities for our youth to participate,

socialize, develop their own interests and pursue their own dreams. The College of Pages will

allow them to learn the many facets and skills of our current Middle Ages.

If there are any branches that would be interested in having a Dean of Pages for their youths

ages 12-17 or have youth that would be interested in this program, please contact me. I would

be more than happy to get things set up for your area or sign up your young adults so that they

can become more involved within the SCA.

Remember, our youth are the future of the SCA so let’s get them involved!

Yours in Service,

HL Rhiannon de Clare

Information for Parents

In the interest of keeping the children of An Tir safe and allowing them to enjoy

our SCA events , it has became necessary for An Tir and all of the SCA to have

rules in place regarding youth at events.

Most outdoor sites have some natural hazards for children, such as lakes and

fast moving rivers and streams. These should be noted in the site handout. . You

will of course want to be familiar with these natural features.

In addition, please read over these rules and discuss the importance of them with

your children.

“The Society Seneschal Policy for Youth Activities has been expanded to clarify

requirements, responsibilities, enforcement, and repercussions for

noncompliance.

Parents or Guardians who bring minors to an event must ensure their children’s’

activities are compliant with SCA Laws, Policies and site rules that require minors

12 and under to be within sight/sound of a responsible parent/guardian at all

times.

All youth activities must have two adults, unrelated to each other, at all times

and the activity must stop if that number falls below the required 2 .

This policy does not relieve parents or guardians of their primary responsibility

for the welfare and behavior of their children.

All youth attending youth activities and classes will need to be accompanied by a

parent or guardian. The SCA youth events and classes should not be considered a

babysitting service for youth.

Documents, Laws. Policies or site rules they will (for a first offence) escort the

minor to their parent/guardian and issue a verbal warning. A report on the

incident will be tendered to the local and Kingdom Seneschal.

required to keep their minor(s) with them for the remainder of the function. A

report on the incident will be tendered to the local, Kingdom and Society

Seneschal.

3. On a third offense, the minor (s) *and * parent(s)/Guardian(s) will be expelled

from the event, and the matter will be reported to local, Kingdom and Society

What’s MissingWhat’s MissingWhat’s MissingWhat’s Missing…………

This issue of The Echoes was produced a bit more quickly than I had

anticipated, but I sincerely wanted it to debut before the completion of

the reign of Their Alpine Highnesses, Brian and Acacia. It has been a

joyous reign and I wish them success in Their endeavors.

In my rush to produce this issue, I decided (for expediency’s sake) to

leave out most clickable hyperlinks. Next and future issues should be

replete with them so that emailing and link-following will be a breeze

for readers.

Pictures, pictures! I hope to include many more photos of our populace

in action. Please see the plea for submissions!

In the next issue, I have planned two themes (and maybe more!)

Chivalry

Children in Medieval Society

I would very much like to hear from Echoes readers with their wants and

advice!
