During this time of the year both 5th grade parents and students feel the

added excitement of preparing for middle school and bidding farewell to elementa-

ry school.

We used this special newsletter as a means to allow our students to process

this reality and gave them the opportunity to say farewell. Thank you, 5th grad-

ers, for all your wonderful submissions! You have done an amazing job!

The reason I love Deer Canyon isbecause of the many good teachers. EspeciallyMr. Parks. I enjoy going to school because Mr.Parks makes class so fun even social study andmath. He makes class interesting. It keeps myattention and I'm eager to learn. He is the bestteacher I have had and maybe in the world.Mr. Parks can do very cool things. He can spinpencils also spin books on his finger!!! I hope Ihave teachers just like Mr. Parks in my 6thgrade class.Thank you for all the teachers at Deer Canyonwho taught me many things I have learned.

~ Naoki H.

Dear Mrs. Dye,You were my favorite teacher in all my years of Deer Canyon. I loved all of

the teachers I got and I never had a year that wasn’t fun, but you really have aspecial place in my school experience here at Deer Canyon. I hope that you willnever retire until you absolutely have to, so that all of kids younger than me canhave the same experience I had. I love how you were so motherly to the whole classand how you always hugged us after school. I also loved the marble jar, Mr. Dalby, and the jobs. The marble parties were also great and the penguin party was so fun!Another fun thing was the starburst jar and I also loved how the place where youkept all the books was like a mini library. These were all great things, but thecamping day was my overall favorite. It was awesome how you let us all bring ourown tents and have a day full of fun and no work! You are such a fantastic teacher! Thanks for making 3rd grade amazing!

Love,~ Olivia K.

Dear Mrs. Abadi,You were my favorite

teacher! The reason you weremy favorite teacher wasbecause you made learning fun,and let us talk and have fun! Iwas really excited when Mrs.Regardie told us you were ourX-Ploration teacher! Also, lastyear, I don’t even rememberdoing that much class workbecause it was so enjoyable andwe did cool things. All theknowledge you taught us lastyear is just in my head. I guessthat’s a good example of howfun you made learning.Hopefully you get a chance toread this. Thank you!

Sincerely,~ Ava L.

Dear Mrs. Seckington, Ms. Summers, Mrs. Castro, Mrs. Abadi, and Mrs. Regardie,These past six years with you guys have been amazing! They have all been really

fun with you guys! Mrs. Seckington, you taught me how to love reading, and I rememberthat mini kitchen playset we used to play with! You also let kindergartners vacuum theroom for fun? I thought that was pretty funny later on! I hope Ben does well in college!

Ms. Summers, I was probably your richest student in your first year at DeerCanyon; 2013-2014. I had every job except the caboose! I loved being in your class too!

Mrs. Castro, I still remember you missed five times in a row throwing thatcrumpled piece of paper until you gave up in 2014-2015. I loved being in your class! Youtook control of things when it really got out of hand, which I really appreciate.

Mrs. Abadi, you were super fun! I remember that you let us play games in thelast week of school! I played charades with Ella, Lani, and Olivia, and it was super fun!You homemade nacho cheese is amazing!

Mrs. Regardie, I dare you to drink coffee and tea! I'll make sure to bring you extramilk chocolate on the last day of school! I loved how you let us have a class “congress”to plan our end of the year party! This year has also been a very memorable and funyear, before going to Mesa Verde. You'll have to find another technology genius nextyear!

Sincerely,~ Audrey C.

Mrs. Wilkerson: You don’tteach at Deer Canyon anymore, butI can still remember how much funit was being in Kindergarten. You

always had fun toys for us to play with, and when wehad good behavior, we put a marble in the jar. When itwas full, you gave us candy.

Ms. Bronson: I remember that we had to read ahard chapter book and build a model of what we hadread. You were always teaching us new things, andworked really hard to build our writing skills.

Mrs. Richards: My friends told me that you werestrict when I was going into Fourth Grade. I didn't thinkso. You tried to teach me at the level that I was at. Youwere such an awesome teacher!

Mrs. Regardie: I will always remember you as myFifth Grade teacher. You always try to add a little humorinto everything. You always have a funny story to tell usin all kinds of situations. You are an amazing teacher!

I'm going to miss Deer Canyon a lot.

Dear Mrs. Castro,

You were the best teacher I had in thisschool. I really enjoyed having you as myThird Grade teacher. When you told theclass about dead words, I’m trying my bestto remember and not use those words inthe letter. When I was in your classroom, Iremember when you told us stories thathappened in the past. I liked it when you

told the story about the “ Golden Squirrels.”  That was myfavorite one out of all. You have the best books in theclassroom library because you had one of my favoriteClassic book, The Wizard of Oz when we get to read afterrecess. I LOVED it when you read us a story. I loved thestory about Red Pen Girl & Sir Conference. Thank you forteaching me how to multiply too. Thank You Mrs. Castro!

SAYING GOODBYE TO ELEMENTARY SCHOOL

In just few days, I will walk the blacktop of Deer Canyon for one last time. Sayinggoodbye to the school I’ve come to know for the last 4 years. It seems like only yesterday Iwas in 2nd grade meeting one of my first and best friend, Sami. When I think back on allthe happy moments we had, I can’t help but feel grateful for it all.

Elementary school helped me discovered the stuff I was made of, and I feel I grewwith every victory of a good grade or defeat by getting a ‘sign-in’ for forgetting homeworkor being to chatty in the classroom.

So thank you, elementary school! For helping guide me, for the wonderfulteachers, parents volunteers, my closest friends (Sami, Elissa, Kailani, Micayla, Brayden, James) and school staff, who all joined forces to prepare me for my next big step. And if elementary school is any indication, I just knowit’s going to be great!

One After AnotherAs the children scream,

For when the school year has ended,I gaze off into the distance and dream,

If I shall pick a favorite of the 5th Grade memories,Which one shall I deem?

●I sprint across the grassy field, I trip, I fall

I scrape my knee,I cry, and bawl,

And let out a plea,This cannot be the right one...

●Hands slam on the table as friend #1 yells “objection!”

She explains her point is stronger than friend #2’sFriend #2 sneers and stalks away in defeat

Now that’s not a merry memory,So surely this cannot be the one…

●I turn to a friend, one that sits next to me

We chat, we laugh, the air is filled with happinessI want to live this moment forever, so badly,

But good things end, many of them do,I would love to pick this one, but it’s just not right…

●I flip through the page of my textbooks, frantically studying,Making sure I have all my homework and all the knowledge I

should know,Who are they to blame? They tell me I should be playing,

But here I am studying so I can get into an advanced college,Now, when I think about it, this may be the one, but it's too

boring for me to consider it one...●

I have many more to tell, but I just don't have the time,I have many friends to engender, and books to read

through,If I were to say which one was my favorite,It would be the day, I entered 5th Grade.

Why? You ask?Because that is where I made my joyful, sorrowful, and

memorable memories; one after another.

The one thing I likeabout Deer Canyon are the people. A lot of my friends are really weird (I am also really weird). Forthe 4th graders ballroom dancing is something you should not look forward to. Farewell, Deer Canyon! Farewell, Deer Canyon, a place that I will spend 1080 days in by the time I’m leaving, aplace where I learned so much, a place I will never forget in my life. There are so manymemorable moments here. Thank you, all my teachers, who taught me everything I need tomove on to middle school. I had many memorable moments in Deer Canyon. How could I forget the fun field trips? How could I forget the trip where I got pecked by a chicken? I would also need to wave good-bye to all the fun activities we do. I will miss the free play, art, science lab, PE where we playfun games. I would also miss the recess. Without it, when would we take a long break from thevery long morning? I also miss the days when we would have to score against the presence of 4goalkeepers. Mrs. Romero, why did you have to ban it when we were having so much fun?! I would also neverforget the time where we had raffles at Mrs. Mendoza’s or Katsiapis’ (did I spell her new name right?) class, because on the last raffle I put all my tickets in and won 11 times. Hello, Mesa Verde, I’m coming and I hope you will be as good as Deer Canyon.

My Years At Deer CanyonI have been in Deer Canyon Elementary School

for 7 years. Preschool all the way to 5th grade. Allthose years has been a blast! Yes, I have been bullied.I have fought through all of those years. All theteachers that have been teaching me are super nice.Every year, I build lots of knowledge. I have made lotsof friends along the journey. I encourage toddlers togo to DCES. The teachers make learning fun in a way. Icannot forget P.E of course! Instead of running, Iloved how we played games that included running.Band and orchestra has always been so fun. Theconcerts were very fun. When I was in 4th grade, Icouldn’t wait until I was going to orchestra. I canalways continue doing violin in middle school. I alwaysthought that Safety and Parking Patrol was a greatidea. I joined and was invited to do Safety Patrol. I willnever forget the memories I made at Deer Canyon.

Myths 1-4th Grade teachers tell youabout 5th Grade#1. Fifth Grade teachers are super strict,

and you can’t make any mistakes or it’sup to the Principal’s office. This isABSOLUTELY false. In my opinion, Fifthgrade teachers Are the NICEST gradeteachers. They are very lax and kind, and

try to make everyday a fun, but educationalexperience.#2. All of your “Upper Grade” report cards are thegrades colleges look at. Yea, this is not true. At all. 3-4th grade teachers only tell you this to scare you intobehaving in class. Do you really think college’s carethat you got an I for legible handwriting in 3rd Grade?Nope. Most colleges only care about your high schoolgrades.#3. That you get excessive amounts of homework andclasswork, and the work is extremely hard. Nope. It’snot Hard at all as long as you know the basics. As forexcessive amounts of work, Not really. I mean if youdon’t finish your homework you stay in at recess, butthe work is not heavily piled on, and homework islight as well.

~ Brianna D.

Deer canyon was amazing. Theteachers, the learning, everything. It wasso exciting to go to school every day. Some of my favorite things were safetypatrol, star of India, and being in Mrs.Jenkins class. And as I go into middleschool, 5 the grade and deer canyon overall will leave a lasting Impression in mymind and heart.

Do: Don't:First grade:        -Be in the Jog-a-Thon -Get lost at school (Don't worry, we all have been.)Second grade:  -Do A-Z countdown  -Be scared at the Monster Mash   (Trust me, it's normal.)Third grade:     -Be in a choir show -Get run over during the Jog-a-ThonFourth grade:  -Join Safety Patrol -Get a sign-in (Oohh...spooky!)Fifth grade:     -Go on the Star of India -Puke in ballroom dancing (Sadly, the rumors are true.)

Ah, Deer Canyon! One of my favorite places in the world! Here, I've experienced some of my favoritememories. From Teddy Bear Travels in first grade, to the Star of India in fifth grade, the list is endless. I'veachieved many things, from my first choir show, to not throwing up in ballroom dancing, to even reaching levelseven in mileage club, it's been a wild ride, but a fun one.

Teachers like Mrs. Graves, Mrs. Ryan and Nisly, Mrs. Jenkins, and especially Ms. Dye, have supported me,and helped me grow. Amazing friends like Amanda A., Ashlyn L., Olivia K., Ava L., Kailani P., Sami S., Emilia M.,Paige K., James B., and my awesome brother Brayden have always been there for me. I can trust that we'll befriends until the very end! To anyone who has ever been in my class, thanks for believing in me. As the years goon, lessons on smarts, Alexander Hamilton, (You knew it would be there!) will fade from memory, (Okay, maybenot the Hamilton part...), but important lessons on kindness, honesty, and friendship will always be in my heart.I love you and will never forget you, Deer Canyon!

My Best Memories at Deer Canyon:10: Work: Although school may be hard, stressful, easy, or tedious, you always know you’re doing it for the greator good. My grades are almost always over grade level thanks to this school. I have learned so much!9: Star of India: The Star of India was a field trip that I took on 5th Grade, and all of 5th Grade faced the strugglesof a sailor! And the reason I put it in this list is because this is the first field trip I have been on which I have slepton.8: Distance: I have been so close to this school my whole life. I live right down Ellingham and I really enjoy walkingto this school7: Playground: I am very close to the school, so I can walk right down the street and play on the playground. I al-ways come here and shoot baskets, swing on the swings, play kickball, (etc…). I love to play here and will be doingit after I go to Mesa Verde.6: Nurse: Every time I got hurt, I would always go to the nurse. She always helps me out, and I always walk out ofthe door feeling better. If by any chance you are reading this Nurse Judy, I appreciate everything you help mewith.5: P.E.: I always enjoy P.E. when my class goes. We did P.E. testing recently, and Mrs. LeClair has pushed me and Ihave got very great scores. I enjoy playing games like dodgeball and Capture the Flag at P.E. I enjoy P.E. a lot andwill miss it very much!4: Teachers: The teachers at Deer Canyon are very kindhearted and sweet. When I don't get a math problem orhave trouble with something, my teachers will guide me through and help me out. Their help always results inabove grade level

3: Parking Patrol: Parking Patrol has been apart of 4th and 5th Grade for me.Every Tuesday, I get to school at 7:20 and I write down tickets for people thatpark incorrectly. I also get out early at 1:45 to write more. I love doing thisjob and I really enjoy writing down people for some reason.2: Lunch/Recess: Even though playing on the playground is much more fun,the 2 laps I run is still enjoyable. I can run super fast, and be one of the firstones on the playground, or walk and be there on time. I usually play Basket-ball or Kickball at Recess and Lunch.1: Friends: All, I am saying all of my friends are 90% from this school! I havemade so many friends here, but sadly, most of them have moved. I still havefriends at Deer Canyon, and they are very supportive and kind.
