YOUTH AND MAGEN AVRAHAM TEEN DEPARTMENT

Answers: 1. Yakov and Yosef 2. In the stories of Cain and Hevel and of Yakov and Esav 3. 17 years

Dvar Torah: Parshat Vayechi starts with Yakov getting sick. He calls for his sons to bless them. When he calls Yosef, he tells Yosef to also bring his sons Menashe and Ephraim for a bracha. Yakov famously blesses them, and when doing so puts his right hand on Ephraim and his left hand on Menashe, despite Menashe being older. He then blesses the rest of his sons individually. Yosef promises Yakov, that when Yakov dies, Yosef will bury him in Chevron with his fathers and mothers. When Yakov dies, Yosef does just that; he brings his father's body back to Israel. The other eleven brothers fear that Yakov was the only reason they were still alive and that Yosef will finally seek revenge, so they apologize again to Yosef for selling him. Yosef promises them that all is forgiven. The Parsha ends with the death of Yosef in Egypt. The next chapter begins with the enslavement of Bnei Yisrael.

After Shul Ask Your Children: 1. Which two great patriarchs died in this week’s Parsha? 2. Menashe was blessed before Ephraim even though he was

younger. Where else did that happen? 3. How long did Yakov live in Egypt?

Parshat Vayechi January 10-11 By: David B. Levy

Last Words and Beyond Words

A connection between Parashat Vayechi and the Haftorah are the "last words" of Yakov Avinu and Dovid HaMelekh, which can be illuminated further by reference to the last words in Parashat V’Zot HaBrachah, Idra Zutra in Sefer HaZohar, Sefer Hishtalkut and Megillat Ruth. Midrash Bereishit Rabbah 49:1, Tzror Hamor and Livnat HaSapir relate Yakov’s last words to Moshe’s last words in Parashat V’Zot HaBracha. For example, al pi kabbalah, Yakov’s private criticism of Reuven, is reversed when Moshe makes a tikkun by praying that Reuven should be restored to favor: “Let Reuben live” (Deut. 33:6). Similarly Moses did not assign to Levi a portion in the Land, but blessed Sheivet Levi with the charge of korbanot, as it says, “They shall put incense before Thee and the whole burnt offering upon Thine altar.” Therefore, they were scattered among all Israel to receive ma’aser, as Yakov declared “I will divide them in Jacob and scatter them in Israel.” Hashem is the portion for Sheivet Levi. Jacob did not curse Shimon and Levi but provided them only with private tochahah about their anger, which Rashi relates to Balaam, who observed “How shall I curse whom G-d has not cursed?” (Num 23:8). They were correct in their brotherly love according to the Redak, Ramban, and Alshich to ask, “Shall our sister (Dinah) be treated as a zonah?” (Gen Rabbah 99.7). According to Sanh. 109b, sheivet Levi’s zealous anger resurfaces for the cause of truth when Pinchas ben Elazar ben Aharon Hakohen (Num. 25:14) forbids the flagrant, public pritzut of the intermarriage between Zimri (a Simeonite) and Cozbi, a deed of shame, thus winning for the sheivit a perpetual brit kehunat olam. Lekach Tov further clarifies: “I will scatter them in Israel” was a blessing to Levi, that he might raise scholars to instruct Israel; for afitzem (I will scatter) connotes instruction, as in the text: “Let your springs be dispersed (yafutzu) abroad” (Mishlei 5:16). Moses blessed them in the same vein, “Sheivet Levi shall teach Jacob Thine ordinances” (Deut. 33:10). The last words of King David, a poet, warrior and king whose life is unveiled in an artistic and archeological context, are the blessings and curses recounted in Kings 1 (our Haftorah), Divrei HaYamim 23:27 [elaboration of the Levitical priesthood] and in Shmuel 2:23 where David recalls the chesed done to him by the family of Barzilai and instructs Shlomo to exact Realpolitik justice on David’s enemies. Rambam holds that a great-souled person remembers not the good that he did to others but the good that others did to him. Thus, Dovid shows hakarat ha-tov to his fighting men; in Tehillim, (not just an autobiographical work but poetry with a theological purpose) Dovid acknowledges that his escape from rodefim was in the hands of G-d,

DVAR TORAH

and an act of providence. Rambam in his philosophic magnum opus, Moreh HaNevukhim, holds that regarding providence, G-d guards one in direct proportion to one’s intellectual, ethical, and spiritual virtue attained in olam ha-zeh. This is in keeping with the portrait of Dovid in Maseket Berachot (3b), a faithful servant to the Sanhedrin learning halakhah including the laws of war. “The stone which the builders have rejected has become the chief cornerstone” is a reference to Dovid (Hallel). "Last words" are also significant in Idra Zutra of Sefer Ha-Zohar. Although it is a machloket whether there is anything physical in olam ha-bah — the Rambam says there is not — the Rashbi prepares his talmidim for the heavenly banquet hall (trakolin) in the afterlife where the Rashbi in unio mystica weds the heavenly Shekhinah, and hints of his own resurrection symphony, confirming with Pirkei Avot 4:16 that “This world is a prozdor (hallway) to olam ha-bah, prepare yourselves to enter the trakolin.” This preparation is foreshadowed in the Zohar’s Rav Metivta, an account of a visionary soul journey to the Garden of Eden by Rashbi and the Hevra. The Rashbi’s last words take place on Lag B’Omer when the sefirot emanated as majesty, Hod Shebahod (sod hamishim). Dovid’s last words are timed on the pleromatic emanation of malchut shebimalchut, Shavuot, on which Megillat Ruth’s last words give the genealogy of David via Ruth and Boaz back to the meritorious Tamar. In the 16th century, HaAri HaKodesh practiced techniques of unifications by prostrating himself on the kever of the Rashbi in Meron, or learning Rashbi’s Torah, “to cause the lips to move,” entering into ayn sof. Mikubalim of Safed such as the Remak, Rabbi Chaim Vital, Rabbi Moshe Alshich, Rabbi Trani and Rabbi Yosef Karo practiced causing these cosmic theurgic unifications by learning Mishnah, reciting the Shema and Aseret HaDibrot with intense kavanah, and by meditating on the tetragrammaton, the essence of all divine encryptions of Hashem’s hidden encoded holy-name permutations, according to the Ramban. Last words are also crucial in Hasidic life as noted in Sefer HaHistalkut regarding 42 Hasidic Rebbes from Eastern Europe whose last words and gestures are recorded mirroring the 42 way stations of the pilgrim soul in Parashat Matos-Masei. Many Hasidic tzadikim also give brachot based on the models of Moshe, Yosef and Yakov in the Tanakh. Thus, the Noam Elimelech distributes specific blessings to four of his disciples (similar to Rabbi Akiva’s four disciples). To the Seer of Lublin, he gave the light and insight of the eyes and internal vision. (The Seer, like Rabbi Yitzchak the Blind, a relative of the Rivaad in medieval Provence, had internal (in)sight into the mind’s eye.) To the Maggid of Koznitz he gave purity and strength of heart, to Rabbi Mendel of Prostik, a supernatural Sechel Tov, and to the Apter Rav the powers of derash, a koach peh. Rabbi Zalman of Liadi’s last words were to call over one of his grandsons to teach Torah Li’Shmah in Jewish education. Rav Shmuelke of Sasov sings an exultant joy-filled niggun as the last mystical act that set his soul on its eternal journey to the higher realms, illustrating the power of music in the Jewish arts.
