Feliz Navidad... you’ve probably heard the song on the radio throughout the month. This week in Spanish class students will be learning about various Hispanic traditions for celebrating Christmas. For example, in Mexico they begin “posada” for nine nights starting on December 16. Children go caroling from night to night and reenact the Christmas story where Joseph and Mary look for somewhere to stay. On the last night, Christmas Eve, they celebrate with food, dancing, and a piñata before going to midnight mass. The poinsettia is known as the “flor de nochebuena” or the Christmas Eve flower. This plant is native to Central America and there is a beautiful legend of how the poinsettia came to be. Nativity scenes, or “nacimiento”, are one of the most important decorations in the home for Hispanic families. In Peru they have a “nacimiento” competition to show off their craftsmanship in recreating Jesus’ birth. There are numerous Hispanic Christmas food traditions that vary by country. From tamales to buñuelos, to moros y cristianos to rosca de reyes. They all offer a diverse blend of taste and culture.

and create our own magical creature cards based

    on Pokémon cards.

variety of card games, board games, dice games, table-top games and more!
