MSA offers various Supplied Air Respirators [SAR] that functionindependently of the ambient air.

The self contained breathing apparatus system, including theAirGo and AirMaXX models, is independent of the ambientatmosphere and not tied to a specific location. It offers a widevariety of features and applications. The same applies to theshort duration breathing apparatus PremAire Combination. MSA offers the monitoring systems alpha Personal Networkwith telemetric capabilities and the personal alert safety sys-tem motionSCOUT.

MSA’s chemical oxygen apparatus are ideal for escape or work-ing applications wherever outbreaks of toxic gases, particles orthe sudden occurrence of oxygen deficiency are to beexpected.

The Airline system is designed for applications of extendedduration; e.g. in confined spaces. This system connects to anexternal air supply, offering cost effective protection. If youhave to be prepared for situations where sudden oxygen defi-ciency can occur, an MSA compressed air escape device is anoption well worth considering.

MSA’s self-contained breathing apparatus systems aredesigned for long life and low maintenance. To meet everyapplication and budget the long duration SCBAs can be con-figured according to individual requirements.

Based on its decades of experience, MSA has also developedfour SCBA presets, which offer the ideal configuration for themost common applications. The allrounder preset "AirGo pro" is a high quality system for awide range of applications. The preset "AirMaXX" offers opti-mum wearing comfort and technological sophistication forfrequent and demanding use. "eXXtreme" is the optimalchoice for flash-over trainings. For occasional rescue andescape operations the "AirGo compact" provides superior pro-tection in the low budget range.

The patented SingleLine air management system combinesfive features in just one hose. Another enhancement is thealpha Personal Network, a modular personal monitoring andalarm system with telemetric capabilities.

The personal alert safety system motionSCOUT detects thecessation of bodily movement and offers manual alarm capa-bilities as well.

The PremAire Combination Respirator with its very small sizeand profile is ideal for working in confined spaces or tightplaces.

Weight is dis-tributed evenly and kept close to your body to reduce stress and fatigue. The alpha SingleLine pneumatic system integrates warning signal, second connection and gaugein an easily accessible manifold at your chest [for details see page 19]. The optional alpha PersonalNetwork offers extended electronic and telemetric monitoring and communication capability.

On ships or industrial facilities where such units are mandatory, theAirGo compact is an obvious choice. The lung governed demand valve AutoMaXX-AS is fixed tothe medium pressure line [for details on AutoMaXX see page 24]. The no-frills system keeps costsat a minimum without sacrificing safety. Filtered respiratory protection is dependent on the ambientatmosphere. Local regulations concerning the use of filteringdevices must be observed.

In order to use filtering respirators, the type, properties andcomposition of the hazardous agent in the ambient air mustbe known. The oxygen content in the inhalation air must besufficient [for example according to German regulations: atleast 17 vol %].

When using particle filters, no hazardous gases may bepresent; when using gas filters, no hazardous particles. In caseof doubt, a combined filter must be used.

The most frequently used filters are of the ABEK type, whichprotect against many hazards at the same time, due to thewide range of protection that they provide. Based onEN 14387, these filters have an application range covering thecode letters A, B, E and K. Benefits for the user include: safeselection, no mix-ups, economical procurement, simpler stock-keeping.

High-grade multiple range filters have an even greater sphereof application, e. g. the combined filter 93 ABEK CO NO Hg/Stor 93 A2B2E2K2 Hg/St.

Applications, Markings

The service time of respiratory filters depends on the condi-tions of use. For gas or combined filters that are used againstgases, the end of a filter’s service life can usually be detectedby odour, taste or irritation during inhalation. Some filtershave a specified maximum service time [CO filter cartridges,combined filters 93 Hg/St].

For particle filters or combined filters that are used againstparticles, the end of service time can be detected by anincrease in inhalation resistance.

With combined filters – depending on the predominant pro-tective function – both criteria must be observed. Particle fil-ters must only be used once against radioactive contaminants,spores, bacteria, virus and proteolytic enzymes.

The 9X series of MSA gas and combination filters are in fullcompliance with the REACH regulation and do not include anytoxic materials listed in the European Regulation.

F2 X-TREMThe F2X-TREM is a high performance helmet for a variety of rescue missions like forest fires, natu-ral disasters, traffic accidents and industrial environments. It protects against falling and laterallyimpacting objects as well as perforation and offers high resistance against lateral deformationand exposure to elevated temperatures.

The different helmet versions are available in numerous colours [including high visibility andphotoluminescent] and can be ordered with customizable retro-reflective stickers, goggles, chin-straps and neck curtains. Not only is the skin the largest organ, it is also one of the mostsensitive. Special protective work-clothing provides a “thickskin” to protect the “thin skin” that nature has given us.

Whether for natural disaster, decontamination work or theplugging of toxic leaks, MSA has the right type of garment forevery conceivable eventuality.

Gastight chemical protective clothing is designed to protectagainst solid, liquid, gaseous or vaporous hazards. Total encap-sulating suits completely enclose the body and isolate it fromthe ambient air. The air supply is provided by a compressed airbreathing apparatus or a compressed airline breathing appa-ratus with air supply from an airline or a compressor.

MSA suit materials are proven products, such as Vautex SL+and Chempion Elite, but the range also includes the latestmultilayer film compound material Vautex Elite, a combina-tion of elastomer-coated fabric and film laminate.

Portable measuring instruments and personal monitors can begrouped into three application areas:

Combustible Gases

There are three elements required to ignite combustiblegases:

1. Fuel or flammable gas

2. Heat or a source of ignition

3. Oxygen to support combustion

This is known as the fire triangle. If you remove any one of theelements, combustion will not occur. The percentage of com-bustible gas in the air is also important.

According to the ATEX manufacturer directive 94/9/EC and theuser directive 99/92/EC, any personal monitor for flammablegases, if used as a safety device to reduce the risk of explosion,has to be performance approved.

Any manufacturer seeking ATEX EC certification must demon-strate that their product conforms to EN 60079 a minimumrequirement for gaining ATEX approval. All MSA combustiblegas detectors are designed to comply fully with ATEX stand-ards and can therefore be used as safety devices.

Oxygen

Instruments to monitor oxygen deficiency or enrichment[measurement in vol.% range], to warn of the danger ofasphyxiation or to monitor the inerting of tanks and containers.

Toxic Gases

In order to recognise and measure toxic substances in theambient air [typically in ppm – parts per million], single ormulti-gas instruments, such as ALTAIR 5X, are used.

to their long storage timedetector tubes are most suitable foroccasional measurements. The handling of detector tubes isvery simple and easy.

Detector, Action and Trainer Tubes

Detector, Action, Trainer & Sampling TubesDetector tubes are used to measure hazardous substances in the work-place and in the environment.

Action tubes have a shortened sampling procedure [only 2 strokes] forthe rapid evaluation of dangerous situations, e.g. for fire services [withwarning marks].

Trainer tubes are for demonstration and training. They contain a gaseoustest substance which reacts with detector tubes when connected to themby a hose.

Sampling tubes contain various adsorptive materials as sample carriersfor active sampling of hazardous materials in the air using two compo-nent tubes with sampling and backup layers. The samples are analyzed ina laboratory. MSA recommended laboratory services are available onrequest.

GALAXY

The multifunctional GALAXY provides simple but intelligent testing andcalibration of MSA portable gas detectors, e.g. SIRIUS, ALTAIR, ALTAIR PRO,ALTAIR 4X and ALTAIR 5X.

This easy-to-use Automated Test Stand offers high performance, from astand-alone unit to a multi-unit system linked to a PC. Since all wiring andtubing is preconnected within each GALAXY Test Stand and optional cyl-inder holder [patent pending], the required workspace is kept to a mini-mum. Once the gas detector is placed in the GALAXY it will be tested,calibrated and/or charged without the touch of a button.

CompressorsMSA offers compressors that charge 200 and 300 bar compressed air cylinders at the same time.The quality of the breathable air meets the specifications of EN 12021.

The range includes models that offer a variety of different features: standard or noise – suppres-sion enclosures for “superquiet” compressors [64 dB], filling panels with up to nine cylinder con-nections, air supply from 160 – 450 l/min., compressors with three pressure settings. Otherfeatures include: fully automatic condensate removal and the easy replacement of filter/dryingcartridges.

ATEX ATmospheres EXplosible is French for poten-tially explosive atmospheres. According to ATEX Directive 94/9/EC all electronic gas detectors and personal monitors used in potentially explosive atmospheres must be marked and “ATEX”. If the gas detection system [detectors and controller] or personal monitor for flammable gases is used as a safety device to reduce the risk of explosion, it has to be performance approved in addi-tion to the “ATEX” marking.

Performance ApprovalAccording to the ATEX manufacturer direc-tive 94/9/EC and the user directive 99/92/EC any gas detection system [detectors and con-troller] and any personal monitor for flamma-ble gases, if used as safety device to reduce the risk of explosion, has to be performance approved. The ATEX EC type certificate for the product must then show compliance at least to EN 61779 [formerly EN 50054].
