April 17 & 24, 2016Christ At the Center

Dear Friends,

In 1952, then U.S. President, Harry S. Truman, signed a bill proclaiming each subsequent president must declare a National Day of Prayer at an appropriate

date of his or her choice. In 1988, the National Day of Prayer found a permanent date: the first Thursday of May every calendar year. On this day, people of all faiths gather in both public spaces and in houses of worship to pray and meditate on behalf of our nation, its elected leaders, and its people.

On Thursday, May 5 at 12:00 p.m. in the Chapel, First Presbyterian Church will host a National Day of Prayer Service. This forty-five minute, non-partisan service will include:

• Three hymns, My Country ‘Tis of The, O Beautiful for Spacious Skies, and Be Thou My Vision (Jens Korndoerfer, Organist);

• A solo by Wade Thomas, Lift Every Voice and Sing;

• Prayers for Atlanta offered by Cynthia Briscoe Brown, member of First Presbyterian Church and member of The Atlanta School Board;

• Prayers for the state of Georgia offered by Beth Beskin, member of First Presbyterian Church and member of the Georgia House of Representatives;

• A meditation by me, and a pastoral prayer offered by Connie Lee.

I would like to thank Anne Neikirk for her vision in organizing this service, all the participants, and the Worship Council (Brenda Gardner, Chair) for calling the congregation to participate in The National Day of Prayer.

I hope to see many of you at this service on May 5 as we make our prayers known to God (Philippians 4:6) for our beloved city, state, and nation.

Blessings,

Tony Sundermeier

WHIZ KIDS TUTORING MINISTRY NEEDS VOLUNTEERS

Are you interested in making a positive difference in the life of a child? The Whiz Kids Tutoring Min-istry needs additional volunteers to tutor elemen-tary school students in math or reading. Tutoring takes place on Wednesday afternoons from 2:15 to 3:45 at Snapfinger Elementary School which is located at 1365 Snapfinger Road in Deca-tur. If you are interested, or if you know anyone who is interested in tutoring a student in math or reading, please contact Granvette Matthews, the Whiz Kids Coordinator, at 404.228.7747 or at [email protected]. Volunteering just one hour per week can help make a significant difference in the academic life of a child who needs to develop basic math or reading skills.

We are excited that the motion was unanimously approved by our Session, and the new 2013 Presbyterian Hymnal, Glory to God, will be introduced in worship on Pentecost Sunday, May 15, 2016. We are inviting members and friends of First Presbyterian to purchase as many hymnals as they would like at $20 per hymnal. Please contact Katie Law for further information: [email protected]. We are a congregation that loves to sing! I am certain that the new hymnal will deepen that love and continue to encourage us to make a joyful noise unto the Lord! – Tony Sundermeier

THEOLOGYMATTERS Short Courses for the Thoughtful Christian

ROADSIDE RELIGIONWednesdays in the Berean Room | April 13, 20, 27 & May 4| 7:00-8:15 pmInstructor: Ryan Bonfiglio

In America today, christianity is not only encountered within the walls of churches or the confines of small group Bible studies. Rather, expressions of faith routinely seep into popular culture, whether in the form of Bible bumper stickers, evangelistic tracks, mega-church billboards, or christian theme parks. how can we understand and interact with these forms of “roadside religion”? What role do they play in shaping popular christian beliefs? And how might a Presbyterian respond to these curious combinations of christianity and culture? This four-week series will explore these and other questions about the everyday artifacts of faith known as roadside religion.
