World Stroke Day - October 29 th Stroke (also known as cerebrovascular disease) occurs when a blood vessel that carries oxygen and nutrients to the brain is either blocked by a clot or bursts. The extent and location of the brain cell damage from the strokedetermines the severity of the stroke, which can range from minimal to catastrophic. Because different areas of the brain control different functions, the specific effects of a particular stroke depend on which area of the brain is injured. Because brain cells do not regenerate, damage to the nerve cells is permanent. Millions of brain cells die each minute a stroke is untreated. Ruptured blood vessels cause hemorrhagic or bleeding strokes. Here are some stroke warning signs: Sudden numbness or weakness of the face, arm or leg, especially on one side of the body Sudden confusion, trouble speaking or understanding Sudden trouble seeing in one or both eyes Sudden trouble walking, dizziness, loss of balance or coordination If you see someone in the hospital with these symptoms call x1212. If you are at home call 911. October 13 th October 20 th October 27 th November 3 rd November 10 th The Buggy Bunch launched a new bereavement ministry in connection with Indian River Medical Center to support moms and families who lose children to late term miscarriage, stillbirth, tubal pregnancies, fetal demise and infant loss. Working with Megan McFall, Director of Women’s Health Care at IRMC, The Buggy Bunch was given a list of ways Labor and Delivery physicians and nurses believed The Buggy Bunch could help. The development of the Memory Box ministry was established with a generous grant from Christ Church. Memory Boxes are a gift to each family experiencing child loss. Included in the Memory Boxes are items such as soft tissues, poems, handwritten letters, infant Bibles, a devotional for parents that have lost an infant, teddy bears, fabric hearts, forget me knot flower seeds, blankets, art work and more. Burger Day RecapThank you to all who participated in our Burger Day to benefit the United Way. It was a great success!

Peanut butter and jelly. The deadline for these items is October 31st. For any questions regarding the Food Pantry please contact Mindy Serafin at x1124 or [email protected]. As always the IRMC Food Pantry will accept any nonperishable items any time of the year.

We worked on the “Keep Indian River Beautiful” project by cleaning up severly littered areas along Old Dixie Highway and 5th Avenue SW. Team IRMC collected a whole pickup truck load of trash bags!

Medical Ultrasound Awareness Month

Medical Ultrasound Awareness Month (MUAM) is held every October to create awareness of the role diagnostic medical sonographers play in the medical community and to educate the public about medical ultrasound and its many uses in healthcare. When you see someone from echo or vascular and general surgery ultrasound - tell them “thank you” for all that they do!

For a donation of $2, $5 or $10 (your choice) employees may bring their family and friends to enjoy 3 free games. Bring the kids in their cutest Halloween costumes.
