Our Mission is to consistently meet the needs of the community by providing

Emerald Community House has a long history of

incubating initiatives and projects that grow into

bigger things. Some examples are the original

Gemco theatre group, the PAVE Festival, The Local

newspaper and more recently the Emerald Business

Group. This unique community development

strategy has been judged as best practice using an

incorporated body as a legal entity to support worthy

developing projects from the grass roots into going

concerns.

Starting with a fledgling group of 3 businesses and then ECH

Coordinator Mary Farrow, the EBG developed, utilizing Emerald

Community House’s insurance, facilities, promotion and administrative

support. Lynne Trensky, as the next ECH Coordinator was instrumental in

driving this growth with the help and support of the ECH committee, staff

and active EBG members. Emerald Community House wishes much

success to the business group which has now migrated to the Eastern

Dandenong Ranges Association based in Gembrook.

ECH will continue as always to initiate and incubate community development opportunities. In that regard, ECH is developing the Emerald Small Business Group (ESBG). This group will support sole traders, sub-contractors, self employed and micro businesses, including Emerald incorporated associations. ECH has many small business owners who volunteer on the many committees and activities run by ECH, including PAVE, FunFest, Emerald Market and our childcare programs. To find out more about the ESBG, contact the Committee of Management, attn Secretary at [email protected] ECH has been funded by the Victorian government to develop a

business plan to assist school leavers, young job seekers, parents and

job shifters to upskill and become more competitive in getting that much

needed job and increasing their employability resilience. This is a key

component of the Centre of Resilience strategy which is ECH’s

community development operational model. Let’s Learn Local!

QiGong for Health & Healing Course Code QG With Maxine Gardner QIGONG, (chi gong), from which Tai Chi originated, uses the same principles of

combining breath-work, movement and stillness to improve the quality of life on

all levels.

The purpose of these ancient exercises is to seek stillness (relaxation) in

movement (chaos). Bringing these aspects into balance will help to provide

participants with practical tools for coping with the daily stresses of everyday life.

Qigong can improve flexibility, balance, and coordination. It can be beneficial for

arthritis, for those recovering from surgery or illness. Or it can simply help those

who wish to enjoy the practice of a beautiful and gentle way of being,

contributing to their health at the same time. First class is free for new

participants as a trial.

Dates Thursday Jul 16 - Sep 17, 10 weeks Time & Venue 7pm - 8.30pm, ECH Hall Cost $150 Please bring water and a blanket

Exercises for Arthritis

The benefit of regular exercise is one of the most important steps you can take to improve your arthritis. By exercising, you give your body the best possible chance of beating the odds arthritis has stacked against you.

Arthritis exercises include Aerobic, Stretching and Strengthening work. Some benefits you may experience include relief of pain, increased range of motion, improved joint function, better sleep and extra energy. Light weights and bands for stretching will be available for use.

This class combines an Eastern and Western approach to health and will also appeal to those requiring gentle exercises due to ill health, or to strengthen the body after surgery. The class will develop around the needs of the participants.

For more information call Maxine on 0409 193 315 or call Emerald Community House to register your interest.

The Dig In Community Café is an ECH initiative to promote community volunteering, job skills and connections. ECH practices community dining as an exercise in preparedness and community engagement. Managed by community volunteers under the House Coordinator, The Dig In provides a range of volunteer opportunities including menu planning, food preparation, cooking, venue setting, set-up, pack up and dishwashing. Donations are kindly accepted to keep the café going.

Volunteers and diners all enjoy a fun night and it’s a great outlet to make new friends and eat together around the community table. Takes place on the last Friday of every month. Emerald is still going solar!

As part of the Emerald Going Solar project, and

in conjunction with Peter Cook of the

Dandenong Ranges Renewable Energy

Association (DRREA) and Emerald for

Sustainability (EmFSus); ECH plans to install a

solar array on the roof of the ECH Church Hall

owned by Cardinia Shire Council. "We intend to

turn our "chocolate box' hall into a 'power box'

hall as an example of resilience, sustainability

and local em-POWER-ment", says Mary

Farrow, ECH Coordinator.

The solar upgrade is intended to reduce ECH's reliance on fossil fuel

generated power and therefore reduce their power bills and carbon

footprint. It will contribute to the Emerald Going Solar project, using the

highly visible roof space on the main thoroughfare in Emerald.

"Building on the community’s resilience by providing an alternative

power source for ECH for community use when the power goes out is

a key sustainability objective of ECH's Strategic Plan and our efforts as

part of the Centre of Resilience network" says Fiona Perrin, Secretary

of ECH Committee.

Lee Fuller of EmFSus feels this is a move in the right direction to have

the community lead the way in sustainable retrofits. "We can't rely on

government to fund these initiatives and so we are asking ECH

members, supporters, partners and our community to donate to this

Rooftop Appeal. The change we seek starts in the community".

Every dollar helps ECH achieve the goal in becoming a ‘solar’ advocate

for the environment, as well as increasing our business efficiency,

reducing overall costs and promoting business continuity when the power

fails. We have already raised over $5000 toward our goal from

community donations. Should you have any questions regarding this

appeal, please contact ECH on 5968 3881 or at [email protected]

Emerald’s Heritage Bakery by M. Farrow

One of the biggest success stories of the 10th annual Performing

and Visual Arts in Emerald Festival, was "the Hive," a popup wine

bar located in the old Emerald Bakery building at the rear of

Commonwealth Bank. For most, this was an eye opener to a

previously unseen and unknown trace of Emerald's history.

Managed as a fundraiser for the PAVE festival and brainchild of

PAVE committee member Gareth Hart, the Hive hosted music

performances, evening gatherings and local connections, while

enjoying local wines, beer, cider with cheese and fruit platters.

Comments such as "What a magical space" to "Emerald has

needed a place like this for a long time" were recorded in a

guestbook over the 10 day opening.

The red-brick bakehouse was constructed in 1933 for baker and

owner Robert McLean behind an existing bakery shop and

residence (since demolished). ECH has been managing restoration

activities to revive the use of the old bakery with the potential of

resurrecting the century old wood fired oven as recommended in

the heritage conservation plans. Commonwealth Bank, both local

and CBA corporate management have been very supportive

toward the market development and restoration of the old bakery

site.

ECH will continue to restore this site as part of their long term

commitment to heritage protection and community enterprise in

ground breaking agreement with CBA. This kind of community

renewal illustrates the possibilities of community-business shared

responsibility that is beneficial to the local community, saves

important places that tell stories from the past and provides

opportunity for community enterprise to flourish in support of not for

profits in our area.

ECH supports community and social enterprise in the eastern Dan-denong Ranges as part of our Strategic Plan. Our commitment to exercising community self reliance is embedded in the programs and services that we provide. We are funded by DHS for 25 hours a week to encourage engagement and partnerships that build community strength. Cardinia provides some additional funds as part of the Neighbour-hood House Funding agreement and support s our work in the community. We regularly mentor a diverse range of community groups from our area and other regions who wish to emulate the “ECH Model”. ECH is formally recognised by the Department of Premier and Cabinet in the Victorian Emergency Management Reform White Paper as a case study for building community resilience through our programs and activities that make our community stronger. The Emerald Market and PAVE/Funfest festival are two examples of the ECH supported family of community and social enterprises. The Centre of Resilience (COR) network is a pilot project running at ECH that explores best practice and creative approaches which increase a community’s strength and resilience in the face of environmental, economic and social adversity. ECH provides a regular speaker for the Executive Consequences Management Program, part of Emergency Management Victoria. http://www.emv.vic.gov.au/our-work/current-projects/executive-consequence-management/ Community Computer & Internet Access Computer and internet access is available to the public when Computer classes are not being run. Please check availability with the House on 5968 3881. We also offer scanning, laser printing and colour photocopying on a fee for service basis. Other ad hoc technical service is available also.

Building Community Strength

The Centre of Resilience (COR) is a community development model piloted at Emerald Community House committing to resilience building ideas and initiatives that stimulate community strength and social durability. This includes activities that invest in job skills for a stronger economy, sustainability action, social justice, resourcefulness and community asset protection.

The goal of COR is to contribute to "community continuity" by encouraging the efficient and effective use of existing social, natural, economic and built community based assets in a sustainable way.

If any organisation within a community sets out to have a continuity

strategy, that effort contributes directly to:

sustainable economic, environmental and social benefits

enhancement of community governance and leadership skills through proactive processes

increase in community participation in education, volunteering, living and employment skills

safer and happier communities

COR was recently acknowledged in the “Strategies for Supporting Community Resilience” prepared by the Multinational Resilience Policy Group: “ECH’s vision reflects and embraces many of the central themes that have motivated similar communities across the nation to focus on building community strengths through establishing and strengthening trust and mutual benefit in each area of everyday local activities (Emerald Community House, 2014).”
