Active Aging, Inc. Services Available For Age 60 And Older

Care Management/As-sessments also called Service Coordination: This service assesses an older persons needs to identify what help they need. Help could be provided either in their homes or in a nursing fa-cility or other supervised living arrangement based on the needs identified by the comprehensive as-sessment.Emergency Response System: The placement of a personal emergen-cy response unit in the homes of eligible older persons. A unit is placed in their homes and when help is needed or there is an emergency, the unit is activated and signals for help through the tele-phone lines. Signals go to a base station that is monitored 24/7. The base station responds to the signal and sends the ap-propriate help.Family Caregiver Sup-port Program: Supports an unpaid/uncompen-sated caregiver while they are caring for either an older relative or an older person providing services such as reim-bursement, education and support to the care-giver. Caregivers are re-

imbursed for caregiving needs of the older person while the older person is living at home or in the community. Home Delivered Meals: Nutritious meals are de-livered to eligible per-sons on a weekly basis if they are unable to pre-pare their daily meal. Meals are delivered fro-zen and then heated as needed during the week. Meals include an entrée, sides, bread and milk.In-Home Care: A va-riety of services an eli-gible older person may receive in their homes so they can continue to live at home. This could include services such as nursing, personal care, home support, home delivered meals and personal emergency re-sponse units. Typically different subcontractors provide these services. Nursing Home/Pre-Admission Assessment: Assessments are com-pleted for persons enter-ing a nursing home to as-sure that this is the level of care they need.Personal Assistance: Provided to eligible older persons in their homes and includes pri-marily hands-on care to

assist because they can-not complete the care on their own due to disabilities or physical limitations. Examples of care which could be given includes assistance with bathing, grooming, dressing, ambulation, transferring from bed or wheelchair, assisting with meal preparation and light housekeeping.Personal Care/Home Support: Services pro-vided in the homes of eligible older persons needing hands-on care to assist them with bath-ing, skin care, grooming, dressing, ambulation or supplemental house-keeping. Persons re-ceiving this help cannot complete these activities on their own and need this help so that they can stay living in their own homes.

Happy fall everyone. It has been a warm stretch of weather that feels much more like summer, but this too shall pass. I got my first electric bill since the boys have been away at college. It dropped 68%! That was an actual reading, not an estimate. I always knew those buggers were expensive. Now I have definitive proof. The house is still too quiet, but on the bright side, I’ve cleaned out my closet and pantry and the house has never been cleaner. I’m not sure what I will do when I run out of things to clean and winter sets in. I guess I better start thinking about that!

As I’ve mentioned in every article since July, we still do not have a state budget and Active Aging, Inc. is still receiv-ing no funding at all from the state. We are closely moni-toring spending and beginning to contemplate what bigger decisions will need to be made if a resolution is found to this impasse soon. Our Foundation is still working to raise money to support us during this difficult time and we are very thankful that we have them to do that. Please consid-er supporting us by participating in the Big Cash Treasure Hunt or one of our other fundraising functions.Thank you and have a wonderful month Krista Geer

EmployeeSpotlight

Are you wondering what this new feature is in the Echo? Good, we are glad you noticed! The ‘Employee Spotlight’ is

a fun way to learn more about the ser-vices we offer here at Active Aging, Inc. Each month we will feature an employee, explain their job and what services they offer to our community. This month we are featuring Cathy Kyle who works in Information and Referral along with Apprise. Cathy “Cat” Kyle has been with Ac-tive Aging, Inc. for an impressive 20 years considering she’s originally from the golden state of California. She currently resides in Conneaut Lake where she enjoys the lake view and the many different animals she sees every day (including the skunk that sprayed her dog) and the won-derful people she calls her friends. Cat works within Information and Refer-ral and Apprise. Her job duties vary widely depending on the day. When it comes to Information and Referral, she assists seniors and their families with information on services available such as in-home care and home delivered meals along with finding resources that may be helpful to them such as phone numbers for Senior Housing or the LIHEAP program. The referral aspect is screening a call to see what services may be appropriate and helpful to the consumer. She then processes the referral for the consumer to be sent to the right department that can aid them. When Cat takes her role in Apprise, she’s helping consumers with Medicare needs. This can include answering general questions, counseling new to Medicare consumers and prescription drug plan searches for both new to Medicare consumers and during open enrollment. Cat also screens for financial assistance for programs such as PACE/Low In-come Subsidy and Medicare Savings Plans. There is one more service that Cat helps with and that is PDA Waiver. She assists with the application process where she gathers information from the consumer and reviews it to be sure all the information is correct and necessary before sending it off for processing. It’s no surprise that there is no ‘typical’ day for Cat. She often comes into the office with a plan on what she would like to accomplish for the day before calls come in that completely change it. There is never a day that is completely the same as the one before. This doesn’t bother Cat in the least bit because she’s able to help consumers receive health care that they might not get otherwise and she’s able to learn about their lives and help them in the best possible way she can. The biggest lesson Cat has learned from her role at Active Aging, Inc. is to always listen and be kind. Watching the seniors keep active and attend exercise classes to stay healthy and young is one of the biggest things that have inspired her throughout her 20 years.

Older Adult Protective Services Many older adults are abused, neglect-ed, and exploited by others. Many of these older adult vic-tims are frail and vul-nerable, cannot help themselves and rely on others to meet their basic needs. At Active Aging, there is a specialized unit that is responsi-ble for investigating allegations of abuse, neglect, exploitation and abandonment. Passed and signed into law in 1987, the Older Adult Pro-tective Services Act was implemented to provide assistance to older Pennsylva-

nians who are not able to protect them-selves and who are at imminent risk of abandonment, abuse, financial exploitation or neglect. This spe-cialized unit is made up of case managers that receive special-ized training yearly.Active Aging works closely with Craw-ford County Hu-man Services, Men-tal Health Mobile Crisis, local law en-forcement, in home service providers, personal care homes, nursing facilities and Women Services to provide services to reduce or eliminate

the risk to the older adult. Anyone who sus-pects abuse of an old-er adult, age 60 and over should report it to Active Aging, Inc. at 336-1792 or 1-800-321-7705. Calls are taken 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Callers may remain anonymous and all calls are confidential. If not in this county, you may also call the Statewide Elder Abuse Hotline 1-800-490-8505 and your call will be routed to the nearest Area Agency on Aging.

UPCOMING TRIPS & EVENTSFrom the Foundation

Hello once again fel-low Echo readers. I hope you all had a fantastic Labor Day and were able to make the most of your holiday week-end and the hot & cold September weather we have had. As quickly as I’ve said hello, I’m afraid I must also now say goodbye. This will be my fi-nal FtF. My fiancé has accepted a new job opportunity and both she and I are relocating to North Carolina. While we are saddened to be leaving our home here in Meadville,

not to mention my regular FtF readers, we are also very ex-cited as to the new opportunities that lie ahead for both of us. It’s been an absolute honor and privilege to be able to share the latest and great-est news and in-formation from the Foundation with you all each month. I will truly miss all of you as well as my fel-low colleagues and those I’ve met and began building rela-tionships with here at our senior centers and weekly bingo game. Active Aging has truly restored

my faith in humanity by seeing the impact they have on our lo-cal senior citizens first-hand. They are helping change lives within the commu-nity, and they do so unconditionally. I’ve never been more proud to be part of an organization than I have with Active Aging and the Active Aging Foundation. I wish them all the best in their contin-ued mission of sup-porting the senior citizens of Crawford County now and well into the future. It has also been my privilege to see the

generosity of the many individuals and businesses help-ing support the mis-sion of Active Aging through their phi-lanthropy. Without that level of sup-port, Active Aging would not be where it is today, so for that, we can’t thank you enough! There is an ever growing need when it comes to helping the se-niors within our communities here in Crawford County and that is why I

hope all of you read-ing this will be will-ing and able to offer your support now and in the future. Every gift no matter how large or small, means so much in helping Active Ag-ing to continue their mission. This job has truly been one of the most rewarding and touching experiences of my professional career. And with that, it is time for me to say goodbye and, once again, thank you all

very much! I’m sure the new Develop-ment Coordinator will continue writing FtF and providing you all with the lat-est and greatest from the Active Aging Foundation beyond my departure. As al-ways, be sure to like us on Facebook to keep up-to-date with all the latest news and announcements from Active Aging and the Foundation.Best wishes,Edward R. Barton

Halloween Candy RecipesHave you experi-enced having too much leftover Hal-loween candy? Try some of these fun and easy to make rec-ipes to turn your sim-ple Halloween candy into something more!Halloween Candy Bark – All you need to make Halloween Candy Bark is some chopped up Hal-loween candy and melted chocolate. Spread the melted chocolate onto some foil and top it with the chopped candy. You can use assorted candy such as Snick-ers, M&Ms or Reese’s Pieces or simply just choose your favor-ite. Refrigerate the chocolate mixture for 1 hour to completely set it before breaking it into large pieces. Marshmallow Pop-corn Balls – For this recipe all you need is 8 oz mini marshmal-lows, ¼ cup unsalt-ed butter, 8 cups of popped popcorn, ½ cup of pretzels and ½

cup of mixed salted nuts. Place the pop-corn in a large mix-ing bowl and melt the butter in a sauce pan over medium heat. Once the but-ter is melted, stir in your marshmallows. This will get poured over the popcorn and you can also pour in your pretzels and mixed nuts (or any other ingredient you would enjoy!). Using greased heatproof gloves, roll the pop-corn mixture into a ball and place on a baking sheet. Repeat this process until all the popcorn is used which should make about 12 balls. Let sit for 15 minutes and they’re ready to serve!

Chewy S’mores Snack Mix – This is so simple and fast to make that you won’t believe it! You’ll need 2 cups of popped kettle corn, 1 cup cinnamon-sugar cereal squares, ¾ cup Cocoa Puffs cereal, ¾ cup mini marshmal-lows and 10 Tootsie Roll Midgees that are chopped. Combine all ingredients mi-nus the Tootsie Roll pieces into a seal-able plastic bag or container and shake. Add the Tootsie Rolls and thoroughly shake again. Now en-joy! Don’t be afraid of trying any other in-gredients you would like. Any chopped up candy would work.

The Meadville Senior Center of Active Aging hosts “Ask a

Counselor” October 12Jennifer Yeager Lloyd, MA, NCC, LPC, of Woodbridge Counseling LLC, will be answering ques-tions in a public fo-rum that may help you with the follow-ing life questions. Feeling tense, ner-vous or unhappy? Experiencing con-flict in your relation-ships? Struggling to “parent” your grandchild? Overly concerned about your age, weight or body image? Feeling confused about the direction your life is going? Feeling like no one cares? Come to the Meadville Se-nior Center of Ac-tive Aging, Inc. on

Monday, October 12 to our “Ask A Coun-selor” event at 10:30 a.m. where Seniors 60 and over will be able to write a confi-dential question that will be addressed by Jennifer Yeager Lloyd MA, NCC, LPC. Contrary to popular belief, coun-seling is not sim-ply “giving advice” and isn’t for “weak” people who need a “crutch.” Counsel-ing helps you gain insight into your thoughts, feelings and behaviors. If you have had a fear of counseling and want to see what it is about, come to our “Ask a Counselor”

event. You thought you could face your is-sues alone, but now feel overwhelmed. A counselor can help you understand the “biology of stress.” Once you realize how to harness your brain’s power, you can become more ef-fective in all of your relationships. Come ask your questions in a confidential for-mat. Seniors, age 60 and over can also stay for our lunch that day, if you re-serve your spot two days in advance. For more information or to order your lunch, call Paula Jo Harakal at 336-1792.

Social Security Questions & Answers

My name is John Johnston and I am a Public Affairs Spe-cialist for the Social Security Administra-tion. Every month I get questions from people all over Penn-sylvania on all as-pects of the Social Security program. I offer this column to share some of those questions and an-swers with the read-ers and to strengthen their understanding of Social Security. To contact Social Se-curity by phone, call 1-800-772-1213 or visit our website at www.socialsecurity.govQuestion:Is there a time limit on how long I can re-ceive Social Security disability benefits?Answer:Your disability ben-efits will continue as long as your medi-cal condition has not improved and you

cannot work. Social Security will peri-odically review your case to determine whether you con-tinue to be eligible. If you are still receiving disability benefits when you reach your full retirement age, your disability ben-efits will automati-cally be converted to retirement benefits. Learn more about disability benefits at www.socialsecurity.gov/disability. Question:Why is there a five-month waiting peri-od for Social Security disability benefits?

Answer:The law states Social Security disability benefits can be paid only after you have been disabled con-tinuously through-out a period of five full calendar months. Social Security dis-ability benefits begin with the sixth full month after the date your disability be-gan. You are not able to receive benefits for any month dur-ing the waiting pe-riod. Learn more at our website: www.socialsecurity.gov/disability.

This Month in History• On October 1st, 1908 Henry Ford’s Model T, a “universal car” designed for the masses, went on sale for the first time. It cost $825.• President Abraham Lincoln issued a proclamation on October 3rd, 1863 designating the last Thursday in November as Thanks-giving Day. • The first “talkie” opened in New York on October 6th, 1927. The Jazz Singer starring Al Jolson was the first full-length feature film using spoken dialogue. • On October 8th, 1871 the Great Fire of Chicago erupted. Ac-cording to legend, it started when Mrs. O’Leary’s cow kicked over a lantern in her barn on DeKoven Street. Over 300 persons were killed and 90,000 left homeless as the fire leveled 3.5 square miles, destroying 17.450 buildings. Financial losses totaled over $200 million.• John Lennon was born on October 9th, 1940 and was murdered in New York City on December 8th, 1980. • On October 12th, 1492 Christopher Columbus made his first landfall in the New World in the Bahamas after a 33-day voyage. He named the first land sighted as El Salvador, claiming it in the name of the Spanish Crown. Columbus was seeking a western sea route from Europe to Asia and believed he had found an is-land of the Indies. He thus called the first island natives he met, ‘Indians’. • Former President Theodore Roosevelt was shot by a fanatic while campaigning in Milwaukee on October 14th, 1912. He was saved by his thick overcoat, a glasses case and a folded speech in his breast pocket, all of which slowed the bullet. Although wounded, he insisted on making the speech with the bullet lodged into his chest. He didn’t go to the hospital until the meet-ing ended and full recovered in two weeks.• The War of the Worlds radio broadcast panicked millions of Americans on October 30th, 1938. Actor Orson Welles and the Mercury Players dramatized the story by H.G. Wells depicting a Martian invasion of New Jersey. Their script utilized simulated radio news bulletins which many listeners thought were real.

Breast Cancer AwarenessWere you aware that 1 in 8 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in her lifetime? Octo-

ber is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, which is an annual campaign to increase awareness of the

disease. While most people are aware of breast cancer, many forget to take the steps to have a plan to detect the disease in its early stages and encourage oth-ers to do the same. Help those detect the early stages of breast cancer by encourag-ing breast self-exams and scheduling clini-cal breast exams and mammograms based on age and healthy history. Wear pink throughout October to help make every-one aware and create pink ribbons to wear by following these 4 easy steps. All you need is ribbon, scis-sors and safety pins.1. Choose the ribbon you would like to use for your Breast Can-cer Awareness rib-bons.

Did You Know? Are you looking to attend a class or event at an Active Aging Senior Center, but funds are low? Help is possible through our scholarship program when donation or class fee is required.Active Aging, Inc. offers scholarships in order to help seniors who may be in fi-nancial hardship. This scholarship can be used to attend classes that they couldn’t attend otherwise without additional help. Partial scholarships are also available based on the level of need the senior requires. Applying for a potential scholar-ship is easy and simple and includes a scholarship form that must be filled out and given to the Senior Center Services Director. Scholarships are available at our six senior centers that include Meadville, Lakeland Valley, Titusville, Cambridge Springs, Guys Mills and Canadohta Lake. Without the Active Aging Foundation, this funding and additional help would not be possible. Active Aging, Inc. is dedi-cated to enhancing the lives of persons age 60 and older in Crawford County.

2. Find the right size and length you want your ribbon to be. Once you find the right size and you would like to make more than one, sim-ply use the first one as a template for the rest. 3. Folding the rib-

bon properly might be a little hard to understand, but will become simple once done. With the piece of ribbon horizontal in front of you, take the two ends and cross one over the other while keep-ing the same sides of

each end facing you.4. Now it’s time to fasten the ribbon. Simply slide the safe-ty pin through the ribbon and pin it to whatever you would like. This could be a jacket, shirt or even a purse. Get creative!

Some of the many ways that we are helped by our volunteers are: fund raising activities, special events personnel, APPRISE Insurance counseling, exercise teachers and monitors, food servers at Centers, Caring & Sharing readers, Vet-erans Day Salute, Octoberfest, Senior Fest, Ombudsman and Senior Farmer’s Market Nutrition Program—to name a few. You are so helpful in so many different ways. We appreciate all that you are doing for us. Thank you.

How the Echo is MadeIt’s easy to flip open a book or newspa-per and start reading but have you ever stopped to wonder what really goes into producing it? Our Echo newsletter made its first run in 1987 and has expe-rienced many differ-ent forms. It was at first created in house, then went to the Tri-bune and is now cur-rently printed by the Area Shopper. The Echo is possible by the collaboration of many different per-

sons. Information comes from our six different senior cen-ters, the Foundation, Link, Apprise, So-cial Security and the Executive Director. Deadlines are cre-ated so all the ben-eficial information can be compiled and presented to our con-sumers in the best possible way. Once all the information is together, it is then sent electronically to the Area Shopper. This is where the magic happens. The Echo starts as one big sixteen page puzzle that the information must be fitted into in the most consistent way possible. It takes the designer about 6 hours to fully fit everything onto the electronic pages so it can be sent to print. The Echo takes sev-eral hours to print and is processed through a machine called a plate mak-

er. The plate maker makes plates used for reproducing il-lustrations or print-ed matter. The Echo takes several hours to print and then needs to be stuffed into the Area Shopper which comes out the last Saturday of every month. This action is done by hand down a line of around 4-5 people. It is a tedious and long process that leaves the employees hands black from the ink. Fortunately, the ink used in the Echo is completely non-toxic. This means that if you’re read-ing our Echo, get ink on your fingers and happen to touch your mouth or eyes that it won’t make you sick. We believe that the long process of creating the Echo is completely worth it so our consumers and local senior citi-zens get our informa-tion every month.
