GLOW 2018

Glow is a two month creative festival taking place at exciting venues across Edinburgh.

This new generation of creative individuals showcase their projects in music, theatre, dance, photography, sculpture, illustration, and many other areas within the creative industries.

In this programme you can find out more about the events and exhibitions during Glow festival. Come along and celebrate the success of Edinburgh College’s fantastic students.

How to book

All performances and exhibitions can be booked online at ctzn.tk/GLOW except PASS Out and Cross Currents which should be booked directly through Traverse and King’s Theatre respectively.

Where an event is free, you can still sign up for reminders and more information online. Some events may charge higher prices if tickets are purchased at the event itself. Guarantee a saving by booking online.

Acting and Performance

Performing Arts Studio Scotland (PASS) returns to the Traverse with their unique take on showcase performances for graduate actors. This year, the students will work for two weeks with cutting edge European directors including Aleksander Ivanovski (National Theatre, Macedonia) and Laurentiu Blaga (National Theatre, Romania) to create new pieces on the theme of ‘Revolting!’. Are the cast revolting? What are they revolting against? Find out in these new pieces.

Make-up Artistry

Ministry of Make-up is an event organised by first year HND students to showcase the fantastic skill and expertise of Make-up Artistry students studying SQA and VTCT courses. There will be a range of visual mediums on display including collaboration with other performing arts and photography students. Please note: There may be nudity (live model) and/or photography.

Acting and Performance

Bradley Manning is the 24-year old US soldier accused of releasing 250,000 secret embassy cables and military logs from the Iraq and Afghan wars. This play is a fictionalisation inspired by his story which follows his journey from being a teenager in Wales to facing a court martial and life in prison. How did this happen? And who is responsible for his radicalisation?

Acting and Performance

The London riots of summer 2011 rocked the UK to its core. The events that took place are still at the forefront of discussion between the public and the government. This verbatim and political performance builds a real-time picture of the riots as they unfolded, from tweets by taxi drivers, interviews with politicians, community leaders, victims, to moment-by-moment accounts by riot police. The Riots is both an enthralling discussion and a powerful reminder of the anger boiling up in society today.

Dance

Cross Currents 2018 celebrates the magic and majesty of Hollywood movies, taking inspiration from the heroes of tinsel-town and blockbuster hits. The show has a unique choreographic collaboration, combining the expertise of staff with the passion, energy and creativity of our student body. Cross Currents is performed by dance students from NC to degree level. It highlights the diversity and variety of dance disciplines and genres on offer at PASS.crosscurrents

Join us in our Granton Campus ballroom for an evening of glitz, glamour and everything ballroom! 10 couples will compete to become The Ballroom Factor champions of 2018. The event celebrates the diversity of skills, talents and creativity of our student and staff; it’s going to be epic, definitely not to be missed! Edinburgh College Development Trust is an independent charity that supports Edinburgh College students by providing enhanced opportunities and experiences through partnership working and provision of funding.

Theatre Costume Interpretation

This exhibition of Edwardian inspired ladies wear perfectly displays graduates attention to period silhouettes and tailoring applications. Students were tasked with keeping to a strict budget, and replicating effective and often labour intensive period craft skills. Heads, hair and hats were produced in the Edinburgh College costume studios using a wide range of newly learned and applied sculptural skills.

Photography

Photography course students will showcase their portfolios for one evening only! The NC course introduces both the technical and creative aspects of photography. Students work from tutor led briefs and are directed through a creative process. The briefs are pitched at a beginner’s level and include scope to grow both soft and hard skills. Portraiture, advertising and architecture are just some of the genres covered.

Exposed 18 is the official Edinburgh College graduate photography exhibition, celebrating the outstanding award winning images from our HND2 and BA Photography students. Opening night, 05 June, 7pm - 9pm.

Film and Television

HND2 Television students have created videos inspired by collections at National Museum of Scotland. The videos will be available to view on the National Museums Scotland YouTube channel, as well as showcased alongside the exhibits which inspired the videos. National Museums Scotland have supported this project as part of Year of Young People 2018.

Photography

Access to Industry is a charity which helps excluded people to move into education and on to employment. Partnering with Edinburgh College the students on the Access to Photography course, many of whom had never used a digital SLR camera before, planned and executed photo sessions at various locations to capture some of the magic that makes Edinburgh a World Heritage Site; the architecture, the street scenes and the people.

Free Range is a showcase of the best new graduate work in fashion, design, photography, art, interiors & architecture from around the UK. This exhibition will be showing in London at The Old Truman Brewery. The Edinburgh College Photography department will again be exhibiting the outstanding talent of our students as one of the leading centres for creative photography in the UK.

The iconic Edinburgh Filmhouse plays host to the fifth annual Spliced Awards Show. Edinburgh College film-makers will vie for the prestigious awards selected by a panel of industry judges. The audience will also cast their vote for the ‘audience award’. The screening will feature a variety of shorts including animations, music videos, comedies, documentaries and dramas. Spliced presents the opportunity to see the fresh and emerging talent of the next generation of film-makers.

Feastival will showcase the debut signings to some of Edinburgh’s most exciting new record labels. The labels, run by the HND Music Business students at Edinburgh College, are due to release singles from each of their signed artists which will be available from online retailers on the day of the show.

The Great Big Art Show is a fantastic opportunity to see the breadth of talent studying at one of Scotland’s most exciting and vibrant centres for creative education. The Great Big Art Show

Art and Design

This year’s Edinburgh College Creative Arts end of year show is bigger than ever, bringing together the combined talents of the HND year 2 students from 3D Design (Interiors), Animation, Computer Art & Design, Contemporary Art Practice, Graphic Design, Illustration, Interactive Design and Textiles all under one roof. The exhibition will showcase the work of students in their final year of their HND courses within Creative Industries. The quality of work on show this year is particularly high, with previous graduates going on to successful careers in the design industry.

Contemporary Art

Edinburgh College Contemporary Art Practice graduate students have developed their skills from an interdisciplinary approach encompassing painting, sculpture, performance, photography and moving imagery. This exhibition is the culmination of two years intense and rigorous personal artistic investigation and we are once again delighted to be exhibiting at the internationally renowned Edinburgh Sculpture Workshop. Visual Communication: Graphic Design

This annual one-night only event showcases graduates’ award-winning design work, and celebrates our close ties with industry and secondary schools. All of the work on display is a celebration of educational achievement and working in partnership. Last year over 60 design agencies from across Scotland came to meet the graduates and see their work. This year the event is sponsored by Creative Scotland.
