The last morning saw much hilarity with late commemorationsof wedding anniversaries and presentations to a worthycontroller.

An innovation was the giving of CDs to all the players with thegame scores from the event, a permanent record of the event.

Grateful thanks are due to David Welch for his calmcontrolling, especially of riotous blitz tournaments,Bromsgrove School for providing excellent accommodation, location and food and the Championship Trophy which waspresented by Phil Bird, the enterprises manager of the school. We look forward to going back next year.

EUROPEAN YOUTH CHESS CHAMPIONSHIPS

Herceg Novi, Montenegro September 2006

Rather more young chess players than normal competed in theEuropean Championships. It seemed that the World YouthChampionships were doomed when not only the original hostspulled out, but those who had agreed to replace them. As aresult the ECF decided that rather than disappoint someyoungsters the intended candidates for the 2 events would allgo to the Europeans. Although Georgia (ex USSR rather thanUSA) came in at the 11th hour to run the World event, it wouldhave been an expensive location for travel & is not exactly thequietest place to send youngsters to.

CONGRATULATIONS TO 3C’s on beingawarded the ECF Club of the Year award !!!

Junior Squad Team Triumphs in Poland

The Junior Squad sent two teams to the international Under 16tournament at Jastrzebie Zdroj in Southern Poland. There were32 teams from at least 11 different countries at the event and,for the purposes of the event our teams were christenedLiverpool and London. The former were represented by DanHall, Vedantha Kumar, Robbie Coats and Selina Khoo whilst“London” was represented by Sebastian Pozzo, Xi Yang Guo,Edward Basham and Amisha Parmar. The tournament is verywell organized and also funded by a European grant. As well asthe chess there is a good social and sporting programme withvisits to local mountains and spas as well as Table Tennis,Volleyball and 4-a-side soccer competitions. The teams werealso invited in to a local organisers home for a typical Polishmeal. The teams had also, independentrly, spent a night inKrakow to see what is one of the most beautiful cities inEurope.

In the chess, Liverpool started like a rocket and won their firstfive matches. The third day of the event saw the final fourmatches. The first, against St Petersburg, was drawn; Tallinnwere dispatched 4-0 and the penultimate match against Rownewas also drawn. At this point nerves crept in and the matchagainst Chrzanow (who were fighting for third place) was ouronly defeat. However 1.5 points was enough to ensure that wewon the event even if it did mean the third tie break system(top board’s result) to split us from Frydek Mistek (Czech).London had suffered from a computer!! The event awardedthree points for a win and one for a draw. The computerawarded 2 for a win and, as London drew 6 games theysuffered some horrendous upfloats. Thank goodness we stillhave arbiters who can arbit!! Despite this London only lost toOrlova and ended up in the prize list. Fortunately for“Liverpool” our hosts had checked if Easyjet would take four

mountain bikes – they would and these were proudly returnedto England. Vedantha Kumar, on board two, went through thetournament undefeated to be the 4th highest scoring playerwith 8\9.

One other success needs to be mentioned, Liverpool won thesoccer (although a soccer headline “Liverpool triumph inEurope” is quite commonplace). Selina (who has won manychess medals) was really proud to have won a soccer medal! She played in goal and only conceded one in the competition –Reina needs to watch out!

Our thanks go to our hosts for their excellent organisation,Victor Cross and Nancy Mortimer for their encouragement andguidance and the players for their commitment andfriendliness.Peter Purland

I.C.S.C. World Deaf Team Chess Championship,Hungary, 8-17 September 2006

The England team finished a very creditable 7th, above their10th seeding. The team got off to a bright start after a 1st round2.5 - 1.5 victory against the 2nd seeds, Ukraine, thanks to ChrisKreuzer's miniature against an 2291 ELO-rated opponent. Formany rounds the England team were in contention for a medalbut came up against the strongest opposition in Russia andGermany and suffered their heaviest defeats. The team finishedthe competition on a bright note by holding the 5th seedsPoland to a 2 - 2 draw and preventing them from gaining thebronze medals.

Russia won their 4th successive World Championship goldclosely followed by Germany with the silver and Hungarybronze.

2006 Glorney & Faber Cups, Swansea

The 2006 edition of the Glorney and Faber Cups saw Englandcomplete a hat-trick of wins in both events. The EnglishGlorney players outclassed the Irish and Welsh teams in adouble-round all-play-all. Scotland did not take part this year, but Wales B (composed of local players) made up the numbers. The Faber was a lot closer, until a 3-0 victory against Ireland inround 4 propelled the English girls well ahead of the rest.

As ever, Welsh hospitality was equal to the occasion and theevent acted as the curtain-raiser for the British Championshipsat University College, Swansea. There were no untowardincidents.

English Chess Federation Grand Prix 2005/6

Despite strong late showings from both Mark Hebden andDanny Gormally, Andrew Greet could not be overhauled in theGrand Prix. In the Female Prix both Selina Khoo and DinahNorman reached maximum points but it was KetevanArakhamia-Grant whose outstanding performance in the Smithand Williamson British Championships enabled her to finish aclear first. In the Junior Prix, a host of players reached themaximum score mark following the Junior events in the Smithand Williamson British Championships – however AnkushKhandelwal increased his total with an outstanding first placein the Young Masters Tournament and thus maintained his leadover his rivals. In the Disabled Prix, Jack Rudd overhauledDean Hartley at the top by increasing his %score at the SouthWales International. As suggested previously although theminor places changed there were no late challenges to thewinners of any of the Graded Prix sections. Finally to theSenior Prix where both Harry Lamb and Ray Gamble reachedthe maximum courtesy of fine results at Chester but they werestill well behind runaway winner Richard Desmedt.
