0.1 Course Description and ObjectivesECE650 Digital Communication II

Communication Systems Overview: Communication System Structure, BasicCommunication Concepts, Modulation Techniques, Digital CommunicationSystems, Information Measures, Channel Capacity Noise, Error and Coding.Signals and Spectra: Sampling of Analog Signals, Discrete Fourier Transform(DFT) and Fast Fourier Transform (FFT).Baseband Pulse Modulation and Digital Signaling: Pulse Amplitude Modulation(PAM), PWM, PPM, Pulse Code Modulation (PCM), Differential Pulse CodeModulation (DPCM), Delta Modulation, Line Codes Spectra, MultilevelSignaling, Intersymbol Interference, Time Division Multiplexing and PacketTransmission System.Transceiver architectures and characteristics, Cryptography and Opticalcommunication systems.

Course goalsAbility to understand the analysis and design of digital communicationsystems considering these four main concerns:

1. Selection of information bearing waveform.2. Bandwidth and the power of the waveform.3. Effect of system noise of the received information.4. Cost of the system
