In Scandinavia, we tend to be travellers. We like the adventure of being in new places and

landscapes, hearing other languages, and figuring out how to get around. It makes us feel

extremely alive and it makes us appreciate home even more when we return. Spring and

summer is when we do most of our traveling (and, of course, most of our homecomings). So

when we designed these shoes, we did so with a sense of roaming the world. These are shoes

that feel light and easy to move in and that have a spirit of adventure – in their colours, their

textures and their styles.

We create with an open mind. For us, ideas can come from anywhere — from nature,

movies, art and from furniture to architecture to fashion. Our shoes are where our

inspirations come to life. Ideally, we pass our inspirations forward — and something about

our shoes inspires you.

Can you describe this season's collection for us?

I think these are bright and powerful shoes, characterized by

straight clear lines, strong colours, a sense of happiness and a

positive outlook to the future. They are like eye candy. After the

darker winter times, we feel people want to go out and show

themselves — to be visible and proud of who they are.

What were some of the inspirations behind the collection?

We called our theme “eye candy”, which led to brighter,

colourful shoes. We also focused very much on our materials,

the texture and feel of the leather itself. Another influence was

the complexity of daily life, which we think raises the importance

of simplicity and clarity. Rather than greys, beiges and neutral

colours, we chose colours that step out more – like “dynasty

blue” and “teaberry pink”. It is like candy. The moment you buy

it, you choose the taste and the flavour. You know if you're in the

mood for lemon or for cherry.

These designs feel very Scandinavian. Was this the intention?

Everything that we do is rooted in Scandinavian culture. Every

product carries the essence and spirit of our perspective on life

and our values. For us, it's simply natural to combine comfort and

function with elegance and style. The landscape, the culture,

the history — all these things inspire us every day. They're part of

our design language.

How do the collection colours fit in with overall trends in fashion?

We definitely see an intersection between our sensibility for

the collection and the mood we're seeing on catwalks and at

fashion shows. It is all about lightness and bold colours. Taking

a decision and choosing a position. Right now, there's a strong

movement to reflect happiness and positive thinking. People

want to make a statement. They want to feel visible and part of

a bright future. It's the ”being-proud-of-who-I-am” season. There's

a sense of positivity and lightness and being in the moment. A

candy feel.

Tell us about the feel of the shoes. What can the wearer

expect in terms of lightness, flexibility, walkability and so on?

It's very much the ECCO feel. Comfort, lightness, flexibility,

walkability — this is the “feel” we develop further and further

every season. With each collection, we face challenges and

strive to improve the experience of our shoes. A big part of

every collection is to see every challenge as an opportunity to

become more creative and find new solutions. This makes our

job exciting.

Which shoes are you most excited about yourself?

I am really happy to see the ECCO Jogga with its new colours

and new uppers. My particular favourite is the “ECCO Jogga

Desert Bootie”. For me, it carries the ECCO spirit and makes

a clear statement in terms of colour and design. It brings

comfort and style together in a casual way. The sport-inspired

outsole is the perfect match for the “Desert Bootie” upper.

I am not the “high heel” person, but if I were, I would instantly

fall in love with this season's ECCO Sculptured shoes, which

really offer an incredible mix of comfort and style.

KRISTIN KÄPPLINGER Vice President Branding

Can you tell us why the

ECCO Dress Comfort Collection is so special?

ECCO Dress Comfort was designed for the kind of women we really

admire. We call them the 3-in-1's – because they balance being

a mom, being a romantic partner and striving in their professional

life. And they do it all with grace and feminine style. The collection

is intended to be “easy” to wear. The shoes are versatile, stylish

and very comfortable – the most comfortable wear-to-work shoes

we make, which is saying something. The details are also very

important – the rivets, bows and embossing. It's a very feminine look.

In addition, the ECCO Dress Comfort Collection is all leather – the

upper and inner lining, all of the elements.

Tell us more about the versatility of the collection.

ECCO Dress Comfort is for all the things that happen in a woman's

day – taking the kids to school, going to the office, the coffee bar,

shopping, cinema, drinks in the evening and dinner with friends.

What are some of the innovations that make these shoes different?

At the heart of the shoes is our direct-injection technology, a

different way of shoemaking that lets us make shoes that are very

light, supple and shock-absorbing. It's everything that makes an

ECCO shoe comfortable, only we've made it extremely sleek and

minimalistic, which is what enables us to create the styles. The direct

injection also delivers an extremely good fit — with plenty of room

for the toes. We've also developed special leathers that are resilient,

yet extremely soft and feminine, with a great touch and feel.

Is the collection an outcome of

ECCO's Scandinavian design philosophy?

Absolutely. Applying form follows function to shoemaking means it

all starts with the foot. The shoes are shaped anatomically. And the

direct-injection technology gives the shoes the flexibility to follow

the foot. The decoration is also Scandinavian — essential and

stylish - no bling. Again, the leather is specially developed for this

category, to make it even better fitting, more feminine and stylish.

Can you describe the feel of the shoes?

I think the feel is amazing. Thanks to soft leathers and direct

injection, the collection is highly flexible, extremely light with

good cushioning and excellent shock-absorption. The walking

feel is superb.

Do you think you'll wear the shoes yourself?

Yes, the ballerina. It's definitely the most comfortable ballerina

we've ever made. I love ballerinas but all the ballerinas I like

are cemented and not that comfortable. This ballerina is very

Scandinavian. Simple, with basic colours that are a no-brainer

to match, but also in fresh, fun colours, like teaberry. I plan to

wear them to the office and also for casual nights out, with

jeans and a jacket.

You seem excited about this collection. Tell us why.

The entire SS14 collection excites me, but especially the new

ECCO Touch group. Our company stands for innovating comfort

and pushing ourselves to be better and this product is the

perfect example of how we do this — and I love how they look.

How would you describe the ECCO Dress Comfort concept?

The idea is to mix traditional ways of shoemaking with our

core technology of direct-injection — the result is an elegant,

feminine shoe with a very classic look. We are also using finer

and softer leathers that make the shoes extremely comfortable

and lightweight – all you really have to do is touch the shoes and

you’ll want to wear them all day.

How would you describe

the kind of women Dress Comfort is designed for?

The ECCO Touch is made for busy women with busy lifestyles.

The kind of women who demand comfort and quality without

compromising style. She wants a classic, feminine looking shoe

with fine details that she can wear to the office and then out for

dinner that same evening, but that is still comfortable to wear

while running errands or dropping her kids off at school.

Can you walk us through the technology that's in the shoe?

The technical foundation of ECCO Touch is a highly refined

version of the process that we are known for —direct-injection

technology. The soles are injected underneath the uppers,

offering a more feminine look. This technology, mixed with

hand craftsmanship, offers a truly unique product. We are using

remarkably fine leathers, which result in exceptional touch and

feel, allowing the shoes to be very soft and flexible. Even the

stitching is finer. On the inside, the comfort shank is injected with

polyurethane between the sole and the upper, adding even

more comfort by creating a shock-absorbing layer for you to

walk on.

In what ways do they reflect

ECCO's Scandinavian design philosophy?

This collection goes right to the roots of Scandinavian design –

sleek minimalism, functionality and simplicity. Less is more. This is

our design language. To us, “form following function” means the

shoes must be comfortable — they must follow the foot.

KRYSTAL JONES Product Manager Ladies Branding

You've recently moved from Canada – how do you think

women back home will like the shoes?

Being Canadian, I know this shoe is perfect for the North

American market. It's a great wear-to-work product and I

really think women there will love the styles. Of course, they

will love how soft, lightweight and flexible they are too.

Do you think you'll wear the shoes yourself?

I already have a few pairs, but I will definitely own all of the

ECCO Touch shoes in the collection. The ECCO Touch 15

ballerina is perfect for weekend getaways and exploring

new cities. It’s something you can wear for long periods of

time and the classic styling works with almost anything in your

closet. I’m wearing these now and I definitely need more

colours! The pumps are great for meetings at the office and

then wearing out to dinner. The materials are so soft and

the shoes are so light that you can really wear these all day

and into the night. The sandals are the perfect addition to

any summer outfit and can easily be dressed up or down.

They make you feel feminine and elegant, but extremely

comfortable at the same time.

I love all of the small details on the shoes, but most importantly

how they feel on the foot. ECCO Touch is a true testament

that you don’t have to sacrifice style for comfort.

Bicycles play a vital role in Copenhagener's everyday lives, while contributing a huge portion

of the city’s visual appearance with more than 390 kilometres of designated bike

lanes. When coming to Copenhagen, you will see bicycles parked at every station and in

every street. Every day 36% of the city’s citizens commute to work, school or university

by bike. In fact, more people commute by bicycle in greater Copenhagen than cycle to

work in the entire United States (even though the US has almost 57 times the population

of Copenhagen). The bicycle offers a more affordable and eco-friendly way of getting

around, and it is estimated that the number of people commuting by bike in Copenhagen

will rise to 50% by 2015. Here, you'll find every kind of person riding to work on their

bike, from lawyers to construction workers, stock brokers to fashion editors.

Tell us about the ECCO Men's Formal Collection.

The motivation is to always work with contemporary

silhouettes, while making the shoes look even slimmer and

more minimalist. Interestingly, much of our design efforts

have been about adapting our sophisticated direct-injection

technology to look more like traditional cemented shoes.

This mix of timeless shape and simplicity definitely reflects our

Scandinavian perspective.

Name three things you love about these shoes that set them

apart from other men's formal shoes.

One, the combination of exceptional comfort with superb

style. The shoes are high-end in appearance, yet the feel is

light and athletic.

Two, the diversity. We have a wide range of options from more

formal to more casual expressions.

Three, the leather is of excellent quality and very supple.

ECCO is unique in that we craft our own leathers and that skill

set really shines in our Men's Formal shoes.

What's your personal favourite from the collection?

Right now, I’m wearing ECCO Contoured. It's sort of a hybrid

shoe, combining a casual running-inspired outsole with a very

clean formal upper. It's been one of our best-selling shoes

around the world and for this season, we're giving it an even

more interesting, funky colour palette. I love it.

How would you describe ECCO's approach to a business

shoe in terms of walkability, fit and feel?

We are conscious that men wear these shoes all day long

and frequently into the night, so comfort is critical. Our direct-

injection technology makes our shoes lighter, more flexible

and more durable. It's the same technology we use in our

casual shoes. As a result, our business shoes feel almost like

walking shoes.

Can you talk about different ways men might wear these

shoes? For example, with suits and also more casual clothes.

In general, men are taking more and more freedom with

how they express themselves. Increasingly, we are seeing

men wear our dress casual shoes in different, interesting ways,

including with more formal work attire.

What are some of the highlights

of this season's Leather Goods Collection?

The new men's products are very exciting. One of my favourites is

the ECCO Denio Messenger bag. Its clean modern lines showcase

the natural beauty of the ECCO leather. It's a true expression of

Scandinavian design.

The Small Leather Goods Collection is also very special. We've

created a family of wallets, belts and small accessories that start

the summer off in the right mood.

You'll see wonderful leathers and appealing bright colours.

What are some of the inspirations behind the collection?

Ideas are sparked from everything – it is a result of learning and

evolution / past and future. But our biggest inspiration is the leather

itself. Every piece of leather has its own qualities and emotion.

Describe some of your favourite leathers for the season.

For me, there are two leathers in particular that I'm really excited

about.

The first is Scuba, which is an embossed leather that combines a

matte surface with bright colours, creating a super fresh, modern

look. This leather is a feature of our ECCO Dalaman bags.

The second is Toro. It's a leather that lives and ages with you. It has

a slightly oiled surface and a natural handcrafted feeling, which

gives the bags a masculine and structured look. I especially love

this in a deep rust colour. The ECCO Denio Messenger bag is made

from Toro.

Are there any themes or stories that run through the collection?

We worked with three themes.

“Eye Candy”, which is playful with bright poppy colours. It feels

very active and optimistic.

Then there's “Classic Beat”, designed around more elegant shapes

and black and white imagery inspired by the beat movement of

the 60's.

Our “Exposed” theme is more rugged and rougher, characterized

by natural tones, metallic shades and distressed textures. It's more

nature-inspired.

W O R D S F R O M O U R B A G E X P E R T

W I T H S A R A R O S I N A

SARA ROSINA Designer

How does the collection express

ECCO's Scandinavian design orientation?

For us, form follows function. We always say, “Your life is in

your bag”. We ask how the organization of a bag can make

someone's life easier. Our bags are designed to make the

complications of life simpler and more relaxed.

How does the collection fit in with other trends you see in bags

and overall fashion?

Our product history comes from a combination of fashion trends,

leather trends and consumer needs.

Even if we're working in the context of current movements in

fashion, our products stand out. Everything we do is filtered

through our fusion of Scandinavian design and high-end leather

craft. It's genuinely unique.

We do not necessarily follow all trends present in the market.

However, I can recognize that some of the things that have

inspired us, like the dull leather surfaces, the bright yellow colour

story or the retro sci-fi, metallic shades, seem to have inspired

other designers as well.

For example, the matte black and white look of our ECCO Delight

bags, as well as eye catching metallic leathers, are also showing

up in the collections of other luxury brands.

“For our holiday, we “unplugged” in Vimmerby. Instead of movies, computers,

and shopping, it was all about swimming, reading and relaxing in this medieval

village. As this was the hometown of Astrid Lindgren, writer of children's books

like Pippi Longstocking, we also took our kids to Astrid Lindgren's World, an

amusement park that brings her books to life. Our visit there inspired lots of

storytelling and imagination games. Some of my most enduring childhood

memories are from my own family holidays. I think my children's magical

memories will come from here.”

Bag: ECCO DIKSON Overnighter. Timeless and perfectly modern, it's the only

bag you need for a short trip and also the ideal accessory for a longer time

away.

In Scandinavia, we equate summer with travel. We gathered some friends and members

of our ECCO team to find out where they went for their summer getaway.

“For five generations, my family has come here for vacation and

it's where I spent all my summers growing up — swimming in the

lake, fishing, exploring, playing cards inside on rainy days. Of

course, everything was candlelit and still is, as there is no electricity

or indoor plumbing. To this day, I still basically do the same things

when I go there. I love the total tranquility – surrounded by nature,

no TV, no Wi-Fi. It's down to earth, simple and pure. A big contrast

to a busy life in Copenhagen.”

Bag: ECCO BARRA. This cross-body bag is designed to keep your

hands free to reach for whatever the moment calls for — perfect

for whatever adventures your travels bring.

“On the coast in northern Sweden, Umeå is where I grew up. I come back

for two weeks every summer. It is a place where I relax and regain energy.

My family has a red wooden house by the water where you can pick wild

blueberries, go fishing off the dock, take a walk in the forest or boat for

a picnic on one of the many close-by islands. It's never boring here. The

house is always filled with guests and my mother makes the most fantastic

food. Since it's so far north, the days are long and the sun hardly ever sets.

During the late hours, I like to sit and enjoy the sounds of the fire in the

sauna and cool down afterwards with a dip in the water. There is no better

place for me than that red wooden house in Sweden.”

Bag: ECCO DALAMAN Tote Shopper. Rich, soft leather in happy colours

with plenty of room for whatever you bring — and whatever you find.

Everyone should have a bag like this.

Inspired by the concepts behind the historic Danish getaway of a Kolonihave, we photographed

much of our Spring/Summer collection there. These are shoes characterized by soft textures,

vintage-inspired details and lived-in colours. All with a lightness and flexibility that makes it easy

to be spontaneous and open to the moment.

GARDEN GETAWAY

In the 1800s, the Danish government created an oasis in

the country where workers could decompress and get

closer to nature; the Kolonihave, a garden colony of simple,

livable sheds amidst generous plots of nature. Today, the

Kolonihave continues as a weekend sanctuary, popular

among young families. It’s filled with Scandinavian design

cues, gardens, country landscapes and natural beauty.

ECCO is the rare shoe company that also makes its own

leather. Can you tell us about some of the types of leather

featured this season?

The leather we use for each shoe is very much driven by its

use. So for ECCO Men’s Formal we tend to use traditional firm

leather with a super smooth surface and high shine — this kind

of leather holds shape beautifully.

For women, we've developed a new, velvety, super soft

nubuck leather, which brings out our seasonal colours very

well.

We are also featuring a super soft nubuck, yet with an oily

finish that imparts a more worn, lived-in look, while adding

water resistance.

And we feature a super soft camel leather, which feels like

a second skin, yet is very durable, with a unique texture and

natural waterproofness.

ANNE BERNECKER Trend and Colour Consultant

Why is leather quality important to the fit and comfort of an

ECCO shoe?

As a natural product, leather evolves and changes with age.

High quality, soft leather actually adapts to the shape of the

foot. It's not just for appearance, it adds to fit and comfort.

As part of your job, you do a lot of work with colour. Can you

talk to us about the colours for this season?

For SS14, we're working with a fairly bright colour palette, with

lots of strong accents. With the economy still in recession, we

want to brighten people's mood with colours that pop.

Can you tell us about some

of the textures and finishes we'll see?

We've focused on natural finishes that really bring out the

beauty of the leather. In terms of texture, you'll see lots of

super soft nubuck. You'll also see nature-inspired textures with

strong pebble or structure in concert with bright colours for a

very fresh look.

Tell us about ECCO's approach to leather craft.

We combine our deep knowledge of traditional craftsmanship

with a love of innovation. We are always exploring new

ideas and pushing technical and aesthetic boundaries. We

work with the latest technology and have a strong focus on

sustainability.

AN AFTERNOON OF ADVENTURE

When you're a kid, every day has the potential to be an adventure, a quest

— or a play. Even when you’re relaxing, you’re never at rest. We make shoes

that give growing feet all the possibilities they deserve. From free-breathing

materials to sporty comfort and lively colours, these shoes give kids plenty of

space to be kids. They unite modern style with ready-to-move capabilities. They

feel good. They look good. They do everything.
