    President's Message

For nearly six decades, El Camino College has been proud to serve our community’s educational and cul-tural needs through outstanding course offerings, diverse entertainment venues, and exceptional athletic and fitness opportunities. So now, as we enter our 60th year, the campus itself is taking on a “fresh” new look, with safety and technology upgrades continuing throughout the campus. As we move forward with our facilities plan, we know that our new construction is all thanks to you, our supporters who helped pass our first-ever bond measure four years ago. We are also growing academically – El Camino College consistently ranks tops in transfers to University of California and California State campuses, and our enrollment continues to rise. Of course, our students are our main source of pride here at El Camino College. The determination, drive, and discipline they demonstrate on a daily basis as they pursue their academic and career goals is truly inspiring. Please feel free to visit our campus – we are your community college. Take some time to see the improve-ments in the making and see how El Camino College is changing for the better. Thomas M. Fallo, Superintendent/President

  • 2007 SEASON PREVIEW

2007 EL CAMINO WARRIOR BASEBALL 5

A New Era The El Camino College baseball team looks forward to the 2007 baseball season with an experienced team ready to contend for a South Coast Conference championship. Under the direction of first year coach Nate Fernley, the Warriors look to improve on last year’s 22-21 record. This season returns six starters from the last two years, giving the Warriors a talented offensive unit. Combining that with a young and growing pitching staff, the team has high expec-tations for the upcoming year. The Warriors play a 44-game schedule including 20 home dates at Warrior Field. The Warriors are assisted by coaches Bob Fernley, Michael Acosta and base-ball operations specialist Bill Hood.

Infield Dane Braunecker, A.J Rodriquez and Kyle Leamy come into the season as experienced sophomores, counted on to lead the Warriors throughout the year. Rodriquez was an All-Conference DH last season hitting .336. Braunecker hit over .300 his freshman year be-fore redshirting last season and Leamy will make the move to 1st base after having an impressive summer and fall. Newcomers Robbie Estrada and Ryan Lopez look to anchor the defense up the

middle. Estrada, a 19th round draft choice of the Tampa Bay Devil Rays in 2006, will be counted on to play solid de-fense and provide offense in the middle of the order. Lopez, an All-CIF performer, provides the team with a steady glove and handles the bat well. Ramon Marquez provides offensive punch from the left side and will be an

offensive factor. Rene Chavez, Nick Jones and Alan Gatz provide depth and experience that will be depended on throughout the season. Outfield Ross Babineaux and Brian Ramirez bring the offense pop and speed to the heart of the War-rior lineup. Babineaux hit .318 last year after making the conversion from pitcher to outfielder. Ramirez is a versatile player that will not only be counted on in the outfield, but will see time in the infield as well. Ramirez leads all returning play-ers with a .344 average in 2006 and will be looked upon to be a catalyst for the offense. Newcomer Matt Mercier brings speed and the ability to get on base, and sophomore B i l ly Applegate brings great defen-sive play and a good arm to a strong out-field core. Freshman Billy Madden pro-vides a big stick that brings power to the Warriors offense, and Jose Tostado provides depth as well. Catchers Derrek Duarte will be counted on to do most of the catching this upcoming season. Duarte hit .336 last season for the Warriors and will be depended upon to handle the pitching staff in his first full season behind the plate. Freshman Rey Lopez has made great strides offensively this fall and looks to provide depth and contribute in many situations. Nick Jones is a jack of all trades who will not only provide stability to the infield but also to the catching position. Starting Pitching

    The Positions

  • The Warriors look to rely heavily on ex-perienced sophomores to fill in the starting rota-tion for the 2007 season. All-Conference third- year sophomore Jeff McKinley returns to the mound after going 5-1 with a 2.41 ERA in 2005. McKinley, who sat out last season with reccurring back problems, will be looked upon to carry a good portion of the work load. Sophomore Garrett Ozar comes to the Warriors after two years at the University of San Francisco. Ozar provides experience, leadership and the ability to throw all pitches for strikes, and will be part of a 1-2 punch that gives the Warriors high expec-tations. Alan Gatz made the transition from in-fielder to full-time pitcher this fall. Gatz has made great strides on the mound and will be a key factor for the team’s success. The fourth spot in the rotation could be filled by freshman Rich-ard Riley or sophomore Shawn Fendley. Riley has great stuff, with a variety of pitches, and sopho-more lefthander Shawn Fendley provides experi-ence and emotion.

    Relief Pitching

The Bullpen for the Warriors has a num-ber of pitchers who will compete for innings. Freshman newcomers Taylor Adlam and Percy Perez look to be strong contributors toward the end of games. Eric Morales, Flavio Ramos and Travis Goins will provide much-needed depth and all have potential of making impacts this season. Matt Ronan brings a left-handed arm and South Coast Conference experience to a young pitching

staff. Redshirt fresh-man Anthony Mccaw will be called upon to not only provide innings, but be a situ-ational hitter. Gilbert Camacho could be a factor after complet-ing a successful sea-son with the soccer team.

Season welcome from the Athletic Director As the Athletic Director for El Camino College, it is my privilege to welcome parents, student-athletes and supporters of Warrior athletics to the 2007 season. As in the past history of baseball at El Camino College, we continue to strive toward excellence in the classroom and on the field. We pride ourselves on preparing the student athlete for life, career and/or transfer to the four-year institution through our educational plan. Our athletic programs offer quality com-prehensive educational opportunities to these gifted individuals who excel in academics and athletics dur-ing their time at El Camino College. Once again, we enter this 2007 season with high expectations and a renewed commitment to our commu-nity and our student-athletes. How to Keep Score Warriors’ fans can enjoy baseball more this season by keeping score of the game. The best part about keeping score is that it’s easy. All you need is a basic knowledge of baseball’s rules. Experts use a simple code, which is based on numbering players by their positions. Number Players as Follows 1. Pitcher 6. Shortstop 2. Catcher 7. Left Fielder 3. First Baseman 8. Center Fielder 4. Second Baseman 9. Right Fielder 5. Third Baseman DH Designated Hitter

Symbols for Plays Single FC Fielders’ choice Double HP Hit by pitcher Triple WP Wild pitch Homerun PB Passed ball SH Sacrifice SB Stolen base BB Walk FO Force out K Strikeout DP Double play BK Balk E Error F Foul SF Sacrifice Fly IW Intentional walk L Line drive Kc Called out on strikes B Bunt ~ Change, either for a new pitcher or batter

Every time a batter goes to the plate, use the number to indicate how he was retired or how he reached base. Fielding plays retiring batters or runners also call for use of the numbers. For instance, the batter who grounds out to shortstop is retired 6-3 in your scoring. If he flies to the right fielder , merely use the figure 9. If it is foul: 9F. In the example to the right, the batter reached first on an error by the second baseman, stole second, went to third on a wild pitch and scored on a passed ball. It is convenient to encircle all runs as shown so that scoring plays may be seen at a glance.
