EMBEDDED CONTINUITY & CONTROL
IMPORTANT
HCL EC2TM Disclaimer: HCL EC2 TM, Embedded Continuity and Control, Technology is primarily designed to minimize system downtime and by protecting your system from unwanted and
unpredictable changes of the system configurations, operating system, software settings, parameters settings, caused by viruses, user's errors, system crashes, etc..
While HCL EC2 TM technology significantly helps in increasing the system uptime, please note that HCL EC2TM is NOT an alternative to any other security measures like antivirus, firewall, software update patches, data backup etc.. It is very highly recommended that customer should install separately security features like firewall, anti-
virus, software update patches, etc. It is also recommended that separate data backup be taken from time to time. HCL in no way takes any responsibility of data recovery,
cleaning up virus from the systems, installing any patches etc. Document No: J00000367-IA

HCL EC2TM Technology “ Best Usage ” Guidelines
Do’s
Before first time use of HCL EC2TM
, user is advised to read the HCL EC2TM
readme file & help file
HCL EC2TM
will take its first snapshot when the user turns on his system; if the computer
is pre-installed with HCL EC2 from HCL plant (This snap-shot will be the image of the HDD as shipped from HCL plant). Users are advised to take snapshot once all user software’s and applications have been installed
HCL EC2TM
Standard can have only one snapshot at a time. Users are strongly advised to take periodic snapshot of the system to save all the current data
HCL EC2TM
Standard will not work if there is a physical damage to the HDD / system,
Therefore users are strongly advised to take periodic backup of data in an external media
HCL EC2TM
is not an alternate to an Anti-virus. It is strongly advised to scan your system regularly with the most recent Anti-virus software before taking a snapshot of your
system. Update your Antivirus software’s virus definition file regularly
If you forget your password, you must contact HCL support Engineer. Refer HCL EC2TM
help file and follow the procedure to send the string to the Engineer for retrieving your lost
password
Clean the Disk periodically using the DISK CLEAN option in ABOUT menu available in EC2 to optimize the system performance and storage space. This will defragment the
snapshot
To secure and manage your snapshot, it is recommended to keep a security password in the EC2 console. Refer HCL EC2
TM help file for more details
In the event you wish to uninstall EC2 from your system, it is strongly advised to take the entire system data & files backup on to a network remote location or an external media. This is to prevent any data loss in case you have not been able to uninstall HCL EC2
TM
correctly
HCL EC2TM
needs to be Uninstalled before proceeding with any operations like - formatting / partition change of HDD or OS repair
It is must to install HCL EC2TM
on all the Operating System if you are using multi OS in your system. Read the HCL EC2
TM help file for Installing in a multi -boot environment
During HCL EC2TM
installation (if it has been purchased as a stand alone package), care
should be taken while changing the location of the My Documents and Temporary Files to a new location under the optimize your system performance page, after change, EC2 won’t monitor the new location if the location is in a drive which is not protected by EC2
In case HCL EC2TM
has been purchased as a stand alone software package, then before installation, it is necessary to “turn off” or “disable” any existing Recovery Tool (including MS Windows Recovery Tool) or any encryption tool. It is also suggested to defragment
the system HDD and uncompress the HDD before proceeding for installation

Don’ts
Do not try to boot a HCL EC2TM
installed system from an external source to modify, repair or Format the drive. The recovery solution will fail to start, you may also lose data
Do not format the drive or re-install the OS without uninstalling the HCL EC2TM
first. If you do so, you may lose data
If HCL EC2TM
is not installed properly or it has been knowingly or unknowingly uninstalled from the system, EC2 may stop responding and your system may not be protected by HCL EC2
TM Technology
Do not try to repair the OS using your OS Recovery CD. Before doing so, uninstall EC2
EC2 does not validate the status of the system or OS rather it just takes the hard disk contents and saves it for latter restoration as it is. So it is very important that the user is aware of this fact. User needs to ensure when snapshot is taken, the OS & other files are
in a known good working condition otherwise when the snapshot is restored back by EC2, you may see corrupted OS / missing files or unexpected result
Do not install any Recovery Tool or any Recovery services along with the EC2, this may
have conflict and your system may crash, resulting in loss of data
Do not use any disk cloning / imaging / partition / encryption utilities which access hard disk directly. Doing so may interfere with EC2 operation and it may result in loss of data

Limitations
HCL EC2TM
will work only on HCL desktops and notebooks
HCL EC2TM
will not support on dual HDD. It will support only one physical drive and it can
be the OS installed drive only
HCL EC2TM
works only on Windows XP / Windows Vista Operating Systems (all flavors), and will not work on any other operating systems like Windows Server OS / Linux etc.
HCL EC2TM
will support HDD capacity of only up to 250GB
HCL EC2TM
will not work if hard disk is physically bad / damaged or if there is any hardware problem
HCL EC2TM
is not a real time backup tool. Any data or file user creates is protected by HCL EC2
TM only if a snapshot is taken after creating the data or file
You can not view the data protected under EC2 by connecting the HCL EC2TM
protected
HDD to other system as a secondary HDD as EC2 maintains file tables in a proprietary format
After installing HCL EC2TM
you should not increase or decrease the partition size/change
drive letter after first installation. Not following this will lead to data loss. Uninstall the EC2 to perform this operation
HCL EC2TM
has no option of taking backup to external devices
HCL EC2TM
will not protect the un-protected drive
HCL EC2TM
does not support RAID, SCSI / SAS Hard Disk
In HCL EC2TM
, program logs will display only the snapshot taken time. Further program
log may not capture all actions accurately in this version
HCL EC2TM
will not work if any other recovery Tool or HDD encryption tool gets installed along with the EC2 already installed in the system. (i.e., installing Recovery Tools or any
recovery services working on Windows Operating System, and even running Windows System restore option on your system etc.). This will lead to system crash, blue screen dump and/or data loss
HCL EC2TM
is recommended only for standalone systems. Systems connected to network storage, file servers, centralized backup systems etc are NOT recommended to be loaded with HCL EC2
TM. HCL EC2
TM is not validated or designed for such
environments
