On a very cold early morning in Kelowna, you may have been one of 40 Kelowna Sunrise Rotary members parking on the streets and walking into the Kelowna Yacht Club to be greeted, badged and handshook by an unsung hero (always here early, setting up and greeting) Bruce Brown, traded breakfast monies for wine draw tickets with Robin Durrant & Craig Garries, led in singing the Canadian national anthem by Garry Ford, and prayed for by Greig McPhee before President Barb Penner welcomed our guests: Melissa Newell (daughter of Chico Newell), Adam Jones (guest speaker), Pat McPhee (wife of Greig McPhee), John Haller (guest of Tom Paterson), Jim Holburton (member to be), Al Bischoff (visiting Rotarian from Kelowna Morningside), Dana Fauconnier (wife of Mike Davis) and Jennica Sedmak (daughter of Jerry Sedmak).

Bill Reynolds invited Chico Newell, Rena Warren, David Wikenheiser & Pat McAllister to the front to celebrate their graduation from the new mentorship program; they were mentored by Jerry Sedmak, Wayne Evans & Andy Griffin.

After a group hug, I overheard a comment about our club 'boosting the budget through blackmail…..

Jane Fletcher introduced Dr Adam Jones, a professor at UBC she met when working there recently. Adam has lived in China, Singapore, the UK, Mexico, Canada, USA and Australia, travelled to over 70 countries on every populated continent, written 15 books, and has been teaching at UBC Okanagan since 2008. Adam has been the recipient of the Teacher's Honour Roll every year starting in 2009 (awarded to instructors in the top 10% of student's evaluations). Adam teaches genocide studies, human rights, gender and international relations, and mass media. His research includes crimes against humanity, humanitarian intervention and peacebuilding, and international law. Adam holds Canadian and British passports.

Adam was born in Singapore and his brother in England; their parents now live in Vernon (his dad is a Rotarian). Most of his research, travels and publications are about the 'global south', aka the third world. Today, he focused on Ethiopia as he was there this past summer and knew it has a soft spot in our members hearts. He talked about their past history which could be depicted as a very thin dark skinned child begging, but they have evolved into a country where muslims and Christians cohabit peacefully. Ethiopia has the highest birthrate in the world, but is full of world/man's history such as the home of Lucy's skeleton and the beginning of man.

The capital city, Addis Ababa, is a melting pot of Africa. Lalibela, Bahir Dar and Gondar have wonders of the ancient world worth visiting, where local priests are still working in very ancient churches. 85 million people live in Ethiopia, and it is NOT a wasteland. Adam is also a photojournalist and showed some of his Ethiopian photos during his talk, pointing out one as the battlefields where the Italians 'got their butts kicked'. Ethiopia is very much a traders society, with plenty of selling/business going on. It also has a thriving beer industry.

A problem, typical in most global south countries, is that the children are quite often needed to work alongside their parents and they cannot attend school in those circumstances. 70% of female are still subject to circumcision and genital mutilation. Women are the guardians of traditional culture, and their beads and hair braiding depict which cultures they are keeping alive.

Adam Jones has 9,000 images on his Flickr site which has a creative commons license, meaning anyone can use those photos for free, as long as they give credit to the photographer. www.flickr.com/photos/adam_jones/sets/ The photos are divided by countries so they are easy to view and GORGEOUS.

There was only time for a couple of questions, then Dan Hilbrecht thanked Dr Jones and Barb Penner presented him with a Sunrise pen, which he promised to use until he loses it!

Fred Lindsay alluded to Foundation Month but wanted to remind all this is your chance to give something for Christmas that is longer lasting and more meaningful than the usual types of gifts - give the gift of school! The Market Children Sponsorship Program helps kids in Tegucigalpa, Honduras through the H.E.L.P. Honduras Society. You can sponsor pre-school/kindergarten/primary school for $120/year; grades 7-12 for $225/year; Vocational for $300/year; and University for $350/year. There are also other options for giving. Just email Jane at [email protected] if you'd like a form sent to you, which also has instructions for paying via credit card.

Congratulations to recent RLI (Rotary Leadership Institute) graduates Linda Frandsen, Bruce Brown, Maria Reyes, and Bill Reynolds! Our club has the most RLI grads in the District. Keep your ears open for the next offering, probably in the Spring.

Sheriff Don Turri fined :

Al Bischoff has 32 years perfect attendance (by attending other club's meetings

as makeups). Don noted that 32 years ago Pat Bentley would have been 62 and

Pete Mackenzie would have been 4 (fined both of them). Don also noted that

makeups were not as easy 'back in the day' as there was no internet to find out

when and where a local meeting was being held.

Don Turri did something Gary Bowker NEVER does, and fined himself for being

Italian and having their 'butts kicked' all over the world in wars

Chico Newell was fined for his new scruffy look, but his clients never complain!

Martha Kennedy was fined for 'not wearing a gun?'

Chris Murphy fined for volunteering to be a District Governor's treasurer

Maribeth Friesen was fined for being 12 hours late for a meeting (right day and

time; wrong time of day!)

Rene Bernard left $2 for leaving early

Grey Cup was something our club used to hold a draw for but, since Hamilton is

going to be killed by Saskatchewan, anyone who's been in Hamilton for any
