Formats of eBooks Sample of an eBook record on the catalog
eBooks come in variety of formats. Here are three popular types of eBooks:
Kindle
• File Extension: .AZW (a version of MOBI owned by Amazon) • Exclusive for Kindle, can be read on other devices with Kindle app
ePUB
• File Extension: .epub • Can be read by most popular devices except Kindle. • The text automatically reflows within the display screen
• File Extension: .pdf • Can be viewed in most readers except the first edition of Kindle. • Commonly used to publish documents and images • Do not allow text to flow between pages or to fix the screen size.

E-books for Everyone is a current grant project funded by the Institute for Museum and Library Services through the Texas State Library and Archives Commission, and coordinated by theHouston Area Library Automated Network. We are a group of public libraries in the Houston area working together to help our patrons understand and use e-books and e-readers.

How to register a new Kindle 1. Access Amazon.com 2. Click on “Manage Your Kindle” from the Kindle menu on the left hand side of the screen 3. Sign in with your Amazon account 4. Click on “Register a Kindle” on the left hand side of the screen, enter the 16-digit number of your Kindle, and click on “Register” button. (You'll find Kindle's serial number on the outside of the box or on the Settings menu on your Kindle.)
How to check out library eBooks to Kindle
1. Access http://houstonlibrary.org/downloads, and click on “Overdrive Digital Media Catalog” link 2. Click on “Advanced Search”, and then enter proper information to search for an eBook for Kindle 3a. If an eBook is not available, you can click on “place a hold” to hold this eBook 3b. If an eBook is available, you can click on “add to cart” next to the Kindle edition 4. Click on “Proceed to Checkout” 5. Select “Houston Public Library” from the drop down list 6. Enter your Houston Public Library card number, and click on “Sign In” 7. Click on “Confirm Check Out” 8. Click on “Get for Kindle” 9. At this point, the Amazon website will popup, click on “Get library book” 10. You may be required to login to your existing Amazon.com account -- or create a new account if you currently do not have one. 11. Select the device you would like to download your book then click on “Continue” button. On the next window, a message will appear to confirm that the eBook has been delivered to your Kindle (Public library eBooks require an active Wi-Fi connection for wireless delivery to a Kindle device.) 12. Turn on your Kindle, the eBook you just checked out will automatically sync with your device.

How to transfer Kindle eBooks to Kindle via USB When you see that a Kindle eBook requires “USB transfer”,
after step 11 mentioned above, continue to use the instructions on the following slides to transfer to your Kindle. 12. Click “Save”, and then click “Open Folder” on pop-up windows (You will see the downloaded eBook in the explorer windows) 13. Connect the Kindle to your PC using the USB cable, then double click on Kindle drive, you will see “documents” folder 14. Drag the downloaded eBook and drop it onto “documents” folder 15. Unplug Kindle from your computer and the downloaded eBook will now appear on your Kindle
How to return Kindle library eBooks 1. Access Amazon.com 2. Click on “Manage Your Kindle” from the Kindle menu on the left hand side of the screen 3. Sign in with your Amazon account 4. Select “Return this book” from the “Action” drop down menu next to the book you want to return

How to install “Adobe Digital Editions” software 1. Access http://www.adobe.com/products/digitaleditions/ and click on “Launch” button on the middle left hand side of the screen. 2. Select the features that you want to install and click on “Next” 3. Click on “Install” 4. Click on “Close” when the downloading process is completed. How to authorize “Adobe Digital Editions” software 1. After the “Adobe Digital Edition” software launch, click on “Continue” 2. You have click on the link “get an Adobe ID online” if you do not have one yet. 3. Click on “Create an Adobe Account” on the new browser window. 4. Fill out the required information, and click on “Continue” 5. Now go back to the “Adobe Digital Editions”, and enter your new Adobe ID and password. Click on “Activate” 6. Enter your Houston Public Library card number and click on “Sign In” 7. Select your lending period, and click on “Confirm Check Out” 8. Click on “Download” 9. Adobe Digital Editions will pop up and the eBook will be open. How to Transfer an eBook from “adobe digital edition” to a nook 1. Turn on the Nook, and connect to your computer/laptop using the USB cable. Then, click on the “Go to Library View” icon on the top left of the screen. (The Nook icon will appear at the bottom left) 2. Drag the downloaded book icon and drop to the Nook icon. 3. Unplug the Nook from your computer, and you can see your new eBook in “My Library” section of your Nook.

How to download the OverDrive Media Console app to your Android 1. Tap on “Play Store” icon to open the app 2. Search and install “OverDrive Media Console” 3. After the installation complete, tap on “Open” How to browse/checkout/download library eBooks to Android 1. With the OverDrive Media Console app open, tap “Get Books” from the menu 2. Tap “Add a Library” 3. Input your zip code and tap “Search” 4. Select any Houston Public Library location 5. Tap “Houston Area Digital Media Catalog” 6. Use either “Browse” or “Search” to find your desired eBook 7. When the desired eBook is found, tap “Proceed to Checkout” 8. Tap on the arrow to select “ Houston Public Library” 9. Enter your library card number 10. Tap “Confirm check out” 11. Tap “Download” 12. Tap “Settings” to enter your Adobe ID account if you have one, otherwise please access
www.adobe.com to get Adobe ID 13. Input Adobe ID and Password to “OverDrive Media Console” app 14. Tap on the title of the downloaded eBook to start reading 15. Enjoy your eBook How to return library eBooks on Android 1. Tap and hold the eBook that you want to return 2. Tap the “+” sign, and then tap “Return/Delete” 3. You can choose “Return then Delete” or “Delete Only”
