TODAY’S HEADLINESRACING REVIEW

UNFORTUNATELY ROCKS IN ROBERT PAPINOn a packed Stakes card at Maisons-Laffitte yesterday afternoon, where the ground was good to soft, the main race was the Gr.2 Prix Robert Papin. Just six juveniles, four from Britain, with one apiece trained in France and Italy, went to post and the 1100m race went the way of the Karl Burke-trained Unfortunately, a first Group winner for the ill-fated first season sire Society Rock.

The Tom Dascombe-trained Frozen Angel (Dark Angel) was sent straight to the front and set a good tempo. He was ridden along after halfway, where he was soon challenged by the winner, with last time out Gr.2 Queen Mary Stakes winner Heartache (Kyllachy) challenging down the outside. The winner had to survive the French stewards, having caused the sole French runner, the Criquette Head-Maarek-trained High Dream Milena (Dabirsim), to be snatched up inside the final 100m, when she tried to make a run hard against the near rail.

This was not the first time Unfortunately had travelled across the Channel, as, having won on his second start at Hamilton Park in May, he was beaten only a head in the Listed Prix La Fleche at Maisons-Laffitte in June. He had then since been a neck runner-up in a Pontefract conditions contest. A return to France could be on the cards next for next month’s Gr.1 Prix Morny at Deauville.

Bred by Tally-Ho Stud and a €24,000 Tattersalls Ireland September Yearling Sale graduate, he is a half-brother to the high-class mare Look Busy (Danetime), winner of five Stakes races, the most important being the Gr.2 Temple Stakes. They are siblings to four multiple winners by Chineur, Danetime, Raise A Grand and Red Clubs. They are out of the dual-winning Unfortunate, a daughter of Komaite.

Bred by owner Nills Petter Gill, she is out of the Danehill Dancer mare Negra Del Oro, who won the Norsk Derby and was second in the Dianalopning, Norsk 1,000 Guineas, Norsk Oaks and Swedish Oaks. The third dam is the Reliance mare Note, dam of the Gr.2 Union-Rennen winner and excellent jumps stallion Network.

PRIX DU CARROUSELThe final Stakes race at Maisons-Laffitte yesterday was this 3100m Listed race, which provided Hughie Morrison with a one-two, headed by Fun Mac, who was winning for the first time in Stakes company.

The son of Shirocco set out to make all and was allowed to dictate at a steady pace. Olivier Peslier quickened the tempo on the run for home and sent his mount for home 500m out. Despite having a hoard of challengers in the final strides, he held on from his stable companion Vent De Force (Hurricane Run) by a nose, with Travelling Man (Oasis Dream) a head back in third.

The six-year-old had run well on all three starts this year, which included finishing third in the Chester Cup. Amongst his other attempts in Stakes company, he had been third in the 2015 running of the Gr.1 Prix du Cadran.

Bred by Gestut Gorlsdorf and a Tattersalls October Yearling Sale Book 2 graduate, he is the best foal out of the winning Montjeu mare Favorite, whose yearling colt by Sea The Moon is Lot 49 in the BBAG Jahrlings Auktion. The second dam is the Roseanna Stakes winner Fluid Dancer (Irish River), whose daughter, the three-time winner Fureau (Ferdinand) produced the Champion

A homebred of the Wetheimer brothers, Esquisse is a half-sister to the Listed Prix Matchem winner Pilote (Pivotal), who has also been Group-placed fives times. They are out of the Gr.2 Prix de Malleret winner Legerete (Rahy), who was placed in both the Gr.1 Prix Marcel Boussac and Gr.1 Prix de l’Opera. This is from a fine family that includes the likes of Gr.1 winner and sire Groom Dancer.

PRIX DE LA PEPINIEREThe pace for this 2000m Listed race for fillies and mares aged four or older was sedate and made by the restrained Meliora (Starspangledbanner), with a few rivals keen in behind. The race turned into a typical French contest, with a burn up the home straight from around 500m out. The leader kept finding for Stephane Pasquier, but was passed on either flank 100m from home. Silver Step (Silver Frost) swept past on the leaders left, while on her right was Avenue Dargent (Kendargent) and it was the former who came out victorious in a tight finish, scoring by a short-neck from the Spanish-trained raider. The pair pulled a length and three-quarters clear of the late finishing Tikiouine (Mastercraftsman).

Trained by Pia Brant, Silver Step was making her first French start of the year, having already run twice at Meydan and at Newmarket in May and Epsom last month. On each of those four starts she failed to trouble the judge. Listed-placed in the Bagatelle on this card twelve months ago, she ended her campaign last season with victory in the Gr.3 Premio Elena E Sergio Cumani at San Siro.

D’AMATO RUNNER HUNTS DOWN RIVALS FOR EDDIE READ SUCCESSThe Philip D’Amato-trained Hunt scored his biggest victory to date on the opening weekend at Del Mar on Saturday, when taking the nine-furlong Gr.2 Eddie Read Stakes. The son of Dark Angel travelled strongly just off the pace, but had nowhere to go at the top of the home straight. However, with the leader Kenjisstorm (Stormy Atlantic) shifting to his right, a gap appeared with a furlong to run, which Hunt quickly went through and ran out the length winner. Second home was Ashleyluvssugar (Game Plan), a half-length in front of Mr Roary (Scat Daddy).

A maiden winner in seven starts for Michael O’Callaghan and Qatar Racing, the five-year-old moved to the States midway through his three-year-old season, but was winless on his first four starts. Last season he won three of his first four starts, all allowance optional claimers, before taking the Siren Lure Stakes at Santa Anita in June. This was a first victory since then, with his best run in five intervening starts, when third in the Gr.3 Eddie D Stakes last September.

Bred by his former trainer’s father Michael O’Callaghan and a €78,000 purchase by David Redvers at the Goresbridge May

Breeze-Up Sale, Hunt is the best performer from seven foals of racing age out of the placed Vettori mare Mansiya. She is a half-sister to the Listed Cheshire Oaks winner Abury (Law Society), the dual Listed-placed Forest Shadow (Sadler’s Wells), the Listed chase winner Shadows Lengthen (Dansili) and the Listed chase-placed Ma Yahab (Dr Fong), as well as the dam of the Joint Champion South African Three-Year-Old Filly Bad Girl Runs, winner of the Gr.1 Paddock Stakes and Gr.1 Cape Fillies’ Guineas.

ARROGATE DEFEATED ON RETURN AT DEL MARDel Mar on Saturday was meant to herald a winning return of Arrogate in the Gr.2 San Diego Handicap, but the four-year-old, who on his last start won the Gr.1 Dubai World Cup in spectacular fashion, bombed out. The son of Unbridled’s Song failed to pick up rounding the home straight and finished a distant fourth behind Accelerate (Lookin At Lucky), who scored by eight and a half lengths.

“I’m at a loss for words,” said jockey Mike Smith to www.bloodhorse.com. “He was just flat – so flat. We were going around there OK and then I took him outside like I did in the World Cup, but he just didn’t pick it up. So I dropped him inside again and cut the

sandwiches, cooked with precision on the nearby barbeque by the local Lions Club, drifted across the small pavilion.

As expected, the broodmare Brilliant Bisc led the way selling to prominent New Zealand breeder Sir Owen Glenn, the man that raced Criterion in Europe two seasons back. Bidding opened at A$100,000 and climbed to A$350,000 in A$25,000 increments, where proceedings momentarily stalled. But after a 60 second hiatus things got rolling again until no one challenged the A$600,000 call of Glenn’s representative Geoff Roan seated high in the stands to the auctioneer’s left. Roan would say after the sale that the mare was pencilled in to visit first season sire and Gr.1 Golden Slipper winner Capitalist at Newgate Stud.

Brilliant Bisc was a high class two-year-old, winning the Listed Gimcrack Stakes, the opening two-year-old fillies event of the season in Sydney. She was then Listed-placed a further three times and added a pair of wins to her CV. As a broodmare she has a rising two-year-old colt by Written Tycoon, who made the even A$1 million when sold to agent James Harron at the Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale in April, while she also has a colt foal by I Am Invincible to follow. Sold as Lot 35, Brilliant Bisc entered the ring in foal to first season sire Exosphere to a 21st November cover.

A six-year-old for the next few days at least, Brilliant Bisc, a daughter of international performer Elvstroem, came with plenty of pedigree being the best of six winning foals out of Stella Cadente (Centaine), whose five wins included the Gr.1 Australia Stakes over 1200 metres around Moonee Valley. Her Listed-placed half-sister Moon Fever (Fusaichi Pegasus) produced the Hong Kong Listed winner Dashing Fellow when mated to Duporth, as well as the enigmatic sprinter Aeronautical (Encosta De Lago), who took the Listed Razor Sharp Handicap at Randwick and was third in the Gr.1 Newmarket Handicap down the Flemington straight course. Stella Cadente’s dam Temple Fire was also Listed-placed and a Bletchingly full-sister to the Gr.1 Australian Guineas winner Kenny’s Best Pal, but importantly a three-quarter sister to the Golden Slipper winner in Bint Marscay (Marscay), dam of the Gr.1 winners Bollinger and Mannington.

Agent James Bester won a short battle for the mare Private, the second dearest lot of the day, the gavel falling at A$360,000 three

corner, then wheeled him outside once more and tried to get something from him. But he was just flat. He wasn’t trying. So I just wrapped up on him and got him home safe.

“We’ve got to go back and start over again. Get it back right.”

BISC PROVES BRILLIANT TO TOP TURANGGA FARM DISPERSALYesterday’s unreserved dispersal sale of stock from Stuart Ramsay’s Turangga Farm, held at the White Park showground at Scone, drew a good crowd from up and down the eastern seaboard, as well as New Zealand, and hence saw strong competition for the vast majority of lots, writes Glen Latham. Despite it being mid-winter in Scone, White Park was bathed in warm sunshine as auctioneers Jonathan D’Arcy and Harry McAlpine did their best to keep proceedings moving, whilst the crowd occasionally became distracted as the delightful aroma of the exceptional steak

Topping the Inglis Turangga Dispersal Sale was the Listed-winning mare Brilliant Bisc (Elvstroem). The six-year-old mare, in foal to Darley’s reverse shuttler Exosphere, was bought for A$600,000 by Go Bloodstock Australia Pty Ltd

Rising eleven and with yearling and filly foals to come both by the red-hot sire Star Witness, Shantha’s Girl is the dam of the ultra-consistent three-year-old colt Violate, who was placed in both the Gunsynd Classic and Rough Habit Plate, both Gr.3s, at the recent Brisbane Winter Carnival. Sky Cuddle is a Snippets half-sister to the Group winners Highly Recommended and Sky Love, and the Listed winners Hint and Undeniably.

Earlier on, Tait had picked up Lot 55, the Danehill mare Midnight Fling out of the Gr.1 Blue Diamond Stakes winner Midnight Fever for just A$18,000. Here is a pedigree chock full of black-type performers, headed by Gr.1 Australian Guineas winner Rock Classic and Flying Spur’s Gr.2-winning daughter Astrodame. Winner also of the Gr.2 Edward Manifold Stakes and runner-up in the Gr1 Thousand Guineas, Midnight Fever is a full-sister to the Golden Slipper-third Startling Lass. Dam of Midnight Minx, who was Listed-placed as a two-year-old, Midnight Fling was sold in foal to Widden Stud’s Gr.1-winning sprinter Nicconi.

Tait confirmed after the sale that both Shantha’s Girl and Midnight Fling had been bought to join the quality list of mares to go to Lanwades Stud’s shuttle stallion Bobby’s Kitten when he takes up duties at Twin Hills in a few weeks.

Foals had led off proceedings, the first 27 lots being young stock by a variety of stallions. It was James Bester who was listed as the buyer of the top lot, giving A$125,000 for a well-developed filly by Your Song (Fastnet Rock) out of Stratum’s daughter Space Odyssey. A reasonably early foal with a 20th August foaling date, the filly is out of an unraced daughter to the very fast mare Will Fly by Green Dancer’s French-bred son Will Dancer. Will Fly racked up five wins at Gr.3 level, generally over short courses before producing the Gr.2 Maribyrnong Plate winner Sanziro (Danzero) and the Gr.3 R N Irwin Stakes victress Flying Object (Peintre Celebre).

Marketing the filly for re-sale will be slightly easier for Bester should Your Song maintain his narrow, one win lead over All Too Hard in the First Season Sire by Winners title, which has just a week to go.

Stuart Ramsay was delighted with the results, the 87 lots sold grossing over A$4.1 million. “We achieved what we set out to achieve and I’m really happy with the sale, really happy with it. It’s grossed well.” Ramsay’s silks of green, yellow braces and white hooped sleeves will still be seen on the racecourse and he has held back some foals to be offered at next year’s yearling sales.

bids after an opening gambit of A$250,000. Sold as Lot 62, this daughter of Encosta De Lago and the Straight Strike mare Good Faith went through with a positive test to another Golden Slipper winner in Vancouver.

A 2005 drop, Private has produced three winners to date, the best being the Sebring filly Believe Yourself, who won the Gr.2 Sweet Embrace Stakes in Sydney, ran fourth in the Golden Slipper and was subsequently third in the Gr.1d Singapore Guineas. For her part, Good Faith won the Gr.1 Ellerslie Sires’ Produce Stakes before foaling the Gr.3 winner Tully Dane. Good Faith was out of the British-bred Shirley Heights mare Head Of The River, a half-sister to the dam of Norse Dancer, and is the grandam of Gr.1 ATC Australian Oaks winner Daffodil.

Another mare with a positive cover to Vancouver held down third spot for the day, that being the Gr.2-placed Clover Lane by O’Reilly offered as Lot 38. Bought by South Australia’s Robertson Equine Investments, she made A$220,000 and is one of two foals to race out of Sequential Charm, winner of the Gr.2 Queensland Guineas and a granddaughter of Thatch’s Irish-bred son Rustic Amber through the perennial winner-getting Queensland-based sire Sequalo. Clover Lane’s first foal, a colt by Tale Of The Cat’s Gr.2-winning son Trusting made A$6,000 as Lot 3 in the foal section.

Matthew Sandbolm of Hollymount Stud was active, buying two well credentialed mares for less than A$400,000. The first was Lot 41, the New Zealand-bred Critical Angel by Last Tycoon’s Champion son O’Reilly out of the Gr.1 winner Critic by Centaine. A winner and Gr.3-placed at three, Critical Angel was sold in foal to Testa Rossa and comes from the family of Gr.1 W S Cox Plate winner and sire Ocean Park(Thorn Park).

She set Sandblom back A$180,000 and an hour or so later he was again successful, spending A$205,000 on Lot 71, Tenant’s Tiara, a Listed-winning daughter of Chief’s Crown’s son Beautiful Crown out of Maintenant by Hennessy. Tenant’s Tiara went through with a positive cover to More Than Ready, the resulting foal being a half-sibling to four winners headlined by the Listed-winning Zoutenant (Zizou).

Another prominent studmaster stocking up was Ollie Tait, who made the trip from his Cootamundra property Twin Hills Stud in the state’s south west to the Upper Hunter Valley for the sale. He was rewarded when his A$155,000 bid was accepted on Shantha’s Girl (Lot 66), a daughter of Redoute’s Choice and Stuart Ramsay’s own Gr.1 Emirates Stakes winner Sky Cuddle.

Top-weighted Lady Eli and Dubawi’s Gr.3 Valley View Stakes victrix Quidura duelled through the final furlong, the former asserting close home to triumph for the fifth time at the highest level. Successful in her six starts at two and three, these featuring the Gr.1 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf and Gr.1 Belmont Oaks, the brave dark bay then faced a battle with laminitis after stepping on a nail shortly after the latter victory, but has returned as good as ever, winning last October’s Gr.1 Flower Bowl Stakes, failing by just a nose in the following month’s Gr.1 Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Turf and adding May’s Gr.1 Gamely Stakes. She hails from the third crop of the Gr.1 Metropolitan Handicap hero Divine Park, who now stands in South Korea.

Lady Eli is the sixth foal of Sacre Coeur, whose fourth, the Afleet Alex filly Bizzy Caroline won the Gr.3 Regret Stakes and Gr.3 Mint Julep Handicap. By Saint Ballado, Sacre Coeur is out of Kazadancoa, who produced the Gr.2 (then) Schuylerville Stakes victrix Changing Ways to Time For A Change, the Gr.3 Potrero Grande Handicap victor Jacodra to Highland Park and the Gr.3 Santa Anita Breeders’ Cup Handicap scorer Jacodra’s Devil to Devil’s Bag. In turn, Changing Ways is the dam of High Yield’s Gr.2 Dixie Stakes winner Pays To Dream, while another daughter of Kazadancoa, the Wavering Monarch mare Royal Run produced the Gr.2 Jersey Derby victor More Royal to Mt Livermore and the Gr.2 Breeders’ Futurity scorer Tejano Run to Tejano. Moreover, Royal Run is the grandam of Machiavellian’s Gr.1 Racing Post Trophy hero Palace Episode, who stands at Haras du Logis Saint-Germain, and Spring At Last’s Gr.1 Alcibiades Stakes heroine Spring In The Air and the third dam of Tapit’s Gr.1 Spinaway Stakes queen Sweet Loretta and Mr Greeley’s Gr.2 Debutante Stakes victrix Laughing Lashes. A full-sister to the Gr.1 Oaks third The Dancer, Kazadancoa shares her grandam Aimee with the European Champion Miler and outstanding sire Blushing Groom, the grandsire of More Royal.

4.00 (BST) BAD BARZBURG, 2YO MAIDEN, 1200M1. KABIR (Ger), 2c,

Lord Of England – Karena (Midyan) O: Darius Racing, B: Matthias Tamrat, T: Andreas Wöhler €24,000 BBAG Jahrlings Auktion by HFTB Distances: 4½l, 2¼l. 7 ran.

Kabir (Lord of England) was clearly expected to run well, as he started at a shade of odds-on for his debut. His supporters had no worries as, after racing close up in third, he swept into the lead at the entrance to the straight and quickly put daylight between himself and his pursuers. It is hard to say what the form is worth, but he could hardly have won more easily and is one of his powerful stable’s three entries for the Gr.3 Zukunfts-Rennen. He was well bought by Holger Faust, Darius Racing’s racing manager; his breeder had named him Konig (King), but, in line with Darius Racing’s custom, has been given a Persian name as befits horses named after on of Persia’s great kings. He is the last foal of his Listed-placed dam Karena (Midyan) and is a half-brother to six winners, notably Kahlua (Dashing Blade), who was a smart two-year-old, third in the Gr.3 Preis der Winterkonigin and became dam of Gr.2 German 1,000 Guineas winner Kali (Areion), as well as the dual Listed-placed Koonunga Hill (Big Shuffle). The second dam Key To Love (Alzao) won twice at two and has bred six winners, including Key To Pleasure (Sharp Prod), who was a Gr.3 winner and runner-up in the Gr.2 Goldene Peitsche, as well as the Listed winners Key To Luck and Key To Fortune (both by Big Shuffle). Key To Love was also a half-sister to the Sharpo siblings Kaka and Keniana; the former was also runner-up in the Gr.2 Goldene Peitsche, but won twelve races in all, three of them at Listed level, while the latter won the Listed (then) Preis der Winterkonigin and is dam of Italian Gr.3 winner Key Royal (Royal Academy). The family has been based in Germany for several generations, but Kabir’s fifth dam Karsavina (Silly Season) was runner-up in the 1972 Gr.3 (then) Cherry Hinton for Noel Murless. Most of the many winners have been sprinters, but Kabir was certainly not stopping at the end of this six furlongs trip and should get a mile at least.
