Ridden by Tom Queally, the five-year-old son of Equiano was held up early on in the six-furlong event but, having threaded a passage towards the far-side rail at the two furlong pole, the imposing gelding stayed on tenaciously, despite drifting left to score by a neck from the fast-finishing Tasleet (Showcasing) in second, with the favourite Limato (Tagula) a further three quarters of a length behind in third. TODAY’S HEADLINESRACING REVIEW

TIN PROVES HIS METTLE IN DIAMOND JUBILEEThe Tin Man, who made such dramatic progress thorough the sprinting ranks last year, culminating in victory in the Gr.1 British Champions Sprint Stakes, added further lustre to his CV with a win in the Gr.1 Diamond Jubilee Stakes, the feature race on the fifth and final day of Royal Ascot.

The gelding, who also finished fourth in the 2015 Gr.1 Champion Sprint Stakes, was gaining his third victory at the track. The Tin Man groom’s Oleg Sheyets also won the best turned out award.

today, but Tom said when he won at Newbury [July 16] last year, it was like a road, so he put me at ease about that.

“The Tin Man was the first horse we bought for the Fred Archer Syndicate and he is the top-rated sprinter, so he is a great advert for the syndicate and Fred Archer also built my yard! We have been a bit thin on the ground with runners this year, but it doesn’t matter when you have a horse like The Tin Man to get you out of jail.”

“I’ll see how he comes out of this race. He is entered in the [Gr.1] July Cup, it’s the obvious target, but we will play it by ear. Things have come right for him at Ascot this year and he is in good form at the moment. There looks to be a good three-year-old around the place [Aidan O’Brien’s Caravaggio], so we’ll see what happens later in the year.

“He is great for the yard and a great horse to have. I’m sure we will meet with Caravaggio at some point this year and let’s just hope The Tin Man is in one piece when they do meet up.”

Owned by the Fred Archer Racing-Ormonde syndicate, which was set up by Fanshawe’s wife Jacko, bred by Elizabeth Grundy and a Tattersalls graduate (one of four Royal Ascot winners yesterday), he is a half-brother to the Champion Sprinter Deacon Blues (Compton Place), who also landed the Gr.2 (then) British Champions Sprint Stakes, and the Listed-placed filly Holley Shiftwell (Bahamian Bounty). They are out of the dual winner Persario (Bishop Of Cashel), a half-sister to the triple Gr.3 (then) Leicestershire Stakes winner, Gr.1 Prix de la Foret-third and sire Warningford (Warning).

Like his son, Equiano, who stands at Newsells Park Stud, had his finest moments at Royal Ascot, winning the Gr.1 King’s Stand Stakes twice.

HARDWICKE STAKESIdaho provided his dam Hveger with her second Group winner of the week at Royal Ascot when her four-year-old son of Galileo followed his Gr.1 Prince of Wales’s Stakes-winning elder brother Highland Reel to take the Gr.2 Hardwicke Stakes. Held up behind the leaders, headed by Dal Harraild (Champs Elysees), he was sent to chase Dartmouth (Dubawi), who took over the running in the straight. He quickly overhauled the Royal runner and set sail for home, but his winning margin shrunk as Barsanti (Champs Elysees) finished like a train from a long way back to get within half a length of the winner.

Trainer Aidan O’Brien said: “He is a full-brother to Highland Reel, he has a fabulous pedigree and we’ve always loved him. Epsom was his first run of the year and he arrived at the track only an hour before the race [after travel problems] and he was very upset and he never got time to cool down. He was very unlucky in the St Leger last year, he had a lovely position in the straight.

“Look, we are delighted; he is by Galileo and they never know when to stop improving and trying. Seamie [Heffernan] gave him a peach of a ride. We were very happy coming into the race.”

Often overlooked, Idaho finished third in the Gr.1 Derby and second in the Gr.1 Irish Derby to Harzand, before taking the Gr.2 Great Voltigeur on his way to his disastrous run in the Gr.1 St Leger where he stumbled and unseated Heffernan three furlongs from home.

Bred by the Hveger Syndicate, he is also a half-brother to the Australian-born Valdemoro (Encosta De Lago), who was second in the Gr.1 Crown Oaks and the Gr.1 Storm Queen Stakes. Their dam Hveger (Danehill) was placed in the Gr.1 Australasian Oaks and is a full-sister to the multiple Gr.1 winner and Haras du Petit Tellier-based sire Elvstroem and a half-sister to the triple Gr.1

winner and sire Haradasun (Fusaichi Pegasus), who won the Gr.1 Queen Anne Stakes in 2008, from the family of the Champion Sprinter and sire Starspangledbanner (Choisir), who was also a Royal Ascot winner at the highest level in 2010.

CHESHAM STAKESDiminutive September lived up to her tall reputation, following her easy victory at Leopardstown early in the month, with a comfortably victory in the Listed Chesham Stakes.

Slowly away and bumped leaving the stalls, the two-year-old daughter of Deep Impact was held up towards the rear of the field, travelling strongly, as Nyaleti (Arch) set a searching pace up front. She began to make her move three furlongs out, quickening to the front inside the final furlong and, though Nyaleti kept on doggedly, she had her measure and strode away to score by two and a quarter lengths, with Masar (New Approach) a short head behind in third.

September’s commanding victory propelled her to favouritism for the Gr.1 1,000 Guineas and 10-1 for the Gr.1 Oaks. Her stablemate and paternal half-brother Churchill won this on the way to victory in this year’s Gr.1 2,000 Guineas.

Winning trainer Aidan O’Brien, for whom she was the sixth winner at the meeting, said: “You would have to be delighted with her; she learned plenty today. She is out of Peeping Fawn and by Deep Impact, so she is bred absolutely in the purple. She has a massive engine, is a great traveller and quickens really well.

“Seamus [Heffernan, jockey] loved her when he rode her at Leopardstown [won by five and a half-lengths]. She was very

impressive that day and what’s unusual about her is that she is not a very big filly, but she thinks she is big; she has a big personality. Like those very good ones, she has a real presence about her.

“You would imagine that she would stay much further in time. We might try and finish the season racing at a mile and then see where we go next year; I’m delighted that she does have the pace to run at seven.

“She could go to the [Gr.2] Debutante [Stakes] and then onto the [Gr.1] Moyglare [Stakes] next. She is bred to stay very well, we were thinking of running her in the Albany Stakes, but Ryan [Moore, jockey] thought we should come to this race.”

Bred by Orpendale and Chelston, she is a full-sister to the winner Wisconsin, who charted a somewhat unorthodox course when finishing well down the field in the Gr.2 Queen’s Vase on Friday, and a half-sister to Sir John Hawkins (Henrythenavigator), who was third in the 2013 Gr.2 Coventry Stakes behind War Command. Their dam Peeping Fawn (Danehill) proved to be extremely tough. She only ran for one season but, following her second in the Gr.1 Oaks, she took the Gr.1 Pretty Polly Stakes, the Gr.1 Irish Oaks, the Gr.1 Nassau Stakes and the Gr.1 Yorkshire Oaks.

September’s sire Deep Impact needs little introduction. The Japanese multiple Champion sire won the Japanese Triple Crown, as well as the Gr.1 Takarazuka Kinen, the Gr.1 Tenno Sho, the Gr.1 Arima Kinen and the Gr.1 Japan Cup, and his owner was sporting enough to bring him to Europe, where he was third in the Gr.1 Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe, though he was subsequently disqualified.

Deep Impact was born less than six months before his supersire

Sunday Silence died, but has proved a more than capable substitute, dominating Japanese racing in the same way that his sire did. His dam Wind In Her Hair (Alzao) is from the regally-bred family of Nayef, Nashwan, Unfuwain et al.

WOLFERTON HANDICAPOwner Martyn MacLeod celebrated success with his first ever runner at Royal Ascot as Snoano was the surprise winner of the Listed Wolferton Handicap. Held up one off the rail in the centre of the field, the five-year-old son of Nayef slipped between his rivals inside the final quarter of a mile. He began to draw clear and kept on well in the closing stages to hold off the late lunge by Majeed (Mount Nelson), who could not quite get to the winner in time.

Trainer Tim Easterby was not present for his fifth winner at the Royal Meeting and MacLeod said: “I don’t know where he is, probably at Redcar. He rang before the race. It’s my first runner at Royal Ascot; not a bad way to start! It’s absolutely fantastic. We ran him at Ripon last time and I know he was off the same mark here, but he just had a bit of interference in that race. It just stopped him from going forward. Today he was brave enough when the gap came. He darted into it.”

Snoano, who was third in the Gr.3 Sandown Classic Trial, was bred at Minster Stud by former Champion jockey Willie Carson, who was on hand to greet connections in the winner’s circle. Carson said: “He has always been a lovely little horse, a real trier.”

Twice a Tattersalls graduate, he is out of an unraced half-sister to the Gr.3 Prix Chloe winner Sparkling Beam (Nayef) and the

RETIRING TRUSTEE MARK DAVIES REFLECTSMark Davies, who is standing down as a trustee of the Ascot Authority after 15 years, reflected: “In my time we have knocked down the old stand, moved to York, rebuilt the stand, had a few problems. But we have now sorted those all out and got Ascot back on to the pinnacle that Ascot deserves to be on. I am very proud particularly of the people who work here. There is absolute commitment, loyalty and love of the place. I have worked in many firms and I have never seen it as it is here. It is a real testimony to the people here. When I look back, it is them that I will miss, from the gateman to the chairman, everyone!”

Johnny Weatherby, Her Majesty’s representative at Ascot, added: “I would like to say thanks to Mark Davies. He has been fundamental to the progress that Ascot has made, both at home and abroad, in a period of considerable change for the racecourse. Quite simply, Mark’s contribution has been outstanding.”

two miles and five furlongs to beat the Willie Mullins-trained Thomas Hobson (Halling) one and a quarter lengths in second and Aidan O’Brien’s US Army Ranger (Galileo) a further one and three quarter lengths back in third.

This was Johnston’s second winner of the Royal Meeting after Permian’s victory in the Gr.2 King Edward VII Stakes on Friday. The Middleham trainer said: “There’s nothing like it, having old horses like that, a nine-year-old gelding. The owner talked about retiring him towards the end of last season and I said to him ‘What else is the horse going to do? What’s he going to do but race?’ Markus doesn’t like them to run too often, but he’s a nine-year-old who could run every week. We took him to Pontefract [in October last year] and I said ‘We’ve just got to be bold and run him more often and he won and that earned him another year in training. As he’s shown today, he’s far from finished yet. He doesn’t have many miles on the clock for his age.”

Bred in Germany by Gestut Auenquelle, he is a half-brother to the Listed Winterkonigin Trial winner Oriental Magic (Doyen) out of Oriental Pearl (Big Shuffle), who won the Listed Preis des Gestutes Graditz and is a full-sister to the ill-fated Oriental Flower (dam of the Gr.2 Gerling Preis winner and Classic-placed Oriental Tiger).

Gr.1 Prix Marcel Boussac-third Rainbow Springs (Selkirk). The next dam Pearl Dance (Nureyev) was also a Gr.1-placed juvenile, having finished third in the Moyglare Stud Stakes.

WOKINGHAMOut Do, had not won a race for two years, but the eight-year-old son of Exceed And Excel put that behind him when scorching to a half-length success in the Wokingham Handicap under jockey Daniel Tudhope for trainer David O’Meara.

The horse overcame serious injury to get to Royal Ascot and earlier this week nearly found himself running at Chelmsford rather than at the Royal Meeting.

“It is brilliant,” said Yorkshire-based O’Meara. “Out Do broke his jaw two years ago and then had a bit of a bad season last year. We had thought he was coming back to himself though, the signs were there and he’d put in two good performances at Ripon and Haydock.

“It was touch and go whether we’d get into this race; Monday morning we declared him for Chelmsford, then when the confirmations for here were produced, he only had four to come out for him to get a run here. So we scratched him from Chelmsford and hoped he’d get in here; we declared on Thursday morning and I think he just made the cut by two.

“He is a very fast horse, he had won a Listed race [City Walls Stakes in 2015] in the past over five furlongs and we had hoped then he was going to make up into a Group race sprinter.

“There has been some debate whether he is better over five or six furlongs, but recently over five he has been lacking a little bit of pace, so back at six he looks a lot happier and he was good today. The fast ground is a must for him. We were happy with the draw in stall one, we were worried whether there would be any pace on that side, but a lot of the runners migrated over there.”

Bred by Equibreed srl and twice a Tattersalls graduate, he is out of Ludynosa (Cadeaux Genereux), a half-sister to Silverskaya (Silver Hawk; dam of the Gr.1 Metropolitan Handicap winner, Classic-placed and sire Seville) and the Gr.2 (then) Prix d’Astarte winner Daneskaya (Danehill; dam of the Gr.2 Kyoto Kinen winner and sire Six Sense).

QUEEN ALEXANDRA STAKESThe curtain came down on Royal Ascot with a thrilling finish to decide the Queen Alexandra Stakes. The Mark Johnston-trained Oriental Fox, winner of the race in 2015 and fourth in 2016, returned to the Berkshire track to take the spoils with Joe Fanning in the saddle once again.

The nine-year-old son of Lomitas, owned by Markus Graff, ground it out in the final furlong of the contest over an extended

Thrilling winner of the Gr.1 Diamond Jubilee Stakes at Royal Ascot. The second Gr.1 success for this top rated sprinter. Consigned by Newsells Park Stud as a yearling.

COOLMORE LANDS OWNERS’ PRIZECoolmore, had to rely on countback to secure the owners’ prize at Royal Ascot from Godolphin, with the Tipperary operation pipping its rival by the means of an extra second. Though they both had six wins apiece, Coolmore had seven seconds to Godolphin’s six.

Coolmore’s UK representative, Kevin Buckley, commented: “It is marvellous. It has been a fantastic week and we have thoroughly enjoyed it. As we all know, it is an ultra competitive week, so we are always happy to get a couple of winners. It was a very closely run race for the owners’ trophy, going down to the second places.”

The son of King’s Best was settled in mid-division as Asterina (Dalakhani) set off in front. He went six lengths clear and still held an advantage as the field turned for home, but was soon swallowed up. Best Fouad quickened past the leader and held off the challenge by a neck from Traffic Jam (Duke Of Marmalade) and Civerny (Whipper), who came from the rear of the field.

The winner of the Listed Vase d’Argent in April and three other Stakes races last year, this was his tenth victory from 27 starts.

Bred by Mahmood Mouni and a graduate of Arqana’s 2014 Vente de l’Arc, he is a half-brother to the Listed Foundation Stakes winner Rawyaan (Machiavellian), out of the winning Riverman mare Raheefa, who is a half-sister to the Brazilian Gr.1-third Spa Francorchamps (Wild Again).

CURDLED IS FIRST STAKES WINNER FOR ALL TO HARD Australian supermare’s Black Caviar’s younger brother All Too Hard celebrated his first Listed winner yesterday when Curdled took the Listed Winning Edge Stakes at Doomben. The colt, who was having his fifth start, just got the better of his rival Marseille En Fleur (Swiss Ace) in the closing stages to win by a nose.

All Too Hard, a Gilgai Farm-bred son of Casino Prince, retired to Vinery Stud in New South Wales to stand alongside his sire, following victories in the Gr.1 Caulfield Guineas, Gr.1 C R Orr Stakes, Gr.1 Futurity Stakes and the Gr.1 All Aged Stakes.

LAND O’BURNS STAKESThe Listed Land O’Burns Stakes, the feature race of the day at Ayr yesterday, was won by the Henry Candy-trained Spring Fling. The six-year-old daughter of Assertive took cover in the main body of the field as Merry Banter (Bated Breath) took off in front at a fast pace. The winner struggled to find racing room, but when she did a furlong from home, she quickened well to win by a length and a quarter from Rural Celebration (Pastoral Pursuits), with Queen Kindly (Frankel) a further neck behind in third.

This was Spring Fling’s first victory at Stakes level and her third win from 18 starts, during a career which has lasted five seasons.

Bred by Caroline Wilson, the Goffs UK graduate is a half-sister to the Gr.1 Diamond Jubilee Stakes and Gr.1 Haydock Sprint Cup winner and young sire Twilight Son (Kyllachy) and the Gr.3 Hackwood Stakes and Gr.1 Sprint Cup-placed Music Master (Piccolo).

MAJOR JOHNNIE LEWISMajor Johnnie Lewis, for a number of years Vice-Chairman of the British Bloodstock Agency, has died at the age of 80, having not being well for some years. He rode as an amateur with success under both codes while serving in the 11th Hussars before joining the Curragh Bloodstock Agency. In 1971 he joined the BBA, in those days by far the dominant force in its field, with its particularly large gathering of foreign buyers at the December Sales quite a sight. It was in that area that Lewis first made his mark, forging links particularly with Japanese breeders, which led to him over the years securing the sales of the stallions Lammtarra (Nijinsky) and Generous (Caerleon) amongst other sizeable deals. He is best known now as the manager of Prince A A Faisal’s interests, which have included the top-class Rafha (Kris), winner of the Gr.1 Prix de Diane and dam of the leading sires Invincible Spirit (Green Desert) and Kodiac (Danehill). They were trained by John Dunlop and Lewis bought horses for a variety of the master trainer’s owners, including Benny Andersson of ABBA and David Hunnisett.

Lewis was recognisably an army officer in his manner, but he was also a true gentleman of great charm and humour, slightly dark sometimes, with the slight air of the worries of the world on

CONDUIT’S THINKING DANCER CAPTURES TOKYO CUPThinking Dancer won the Gr.3 Tokyo Jump Stakes yesterday, his first victory at that level. The four-year-old son of Conduit ran out the winner by a neck from fellow open-class winner Good Sky (Stay Gold), with experienced chaser Bit Allegro (Gold Allure) a further length and a quarter back in third.

He was placed four times on the flat between the ages of two and three, before going over fences. He won his second start over jumps, a maiden steeplechase at Fukushima, and was third in the Illumination Stakes next time out. This year, he was placed in the Pegasus Stakes before winning an open steeplechase on his return to Fukushima.

Bred by Northern Farm, he is a half-brother to four other winners out of Spring Board (Assatis), who was third in the a Listed race in Japan and is a half-sister to the Gr.3 Queen Stakes-second Sakura Hustle (Maruzensky; dam of the Japanese Group winner Sakura Speed O), from the family of the Champion Japanese Two-Year-Old Filly Sakura Saezuri (South Atlantic).

Champion Stayer Conduit retired to stud in Japan, but returned to Europe in 2016 to stand at Tullyraine Stud.

(Tagula) and Tasleet (Showcasing) together, resulting in a Stewards’ enquiry, he held on to score narrowly.

The winner of last year’s Gr.1 British Champions Sprint Stakes, having finished second in the Gr.1 Haydock Sprint Stakes, this was his third win at Group level.

He is a half-brother to the Champion Sprinter Deacon Blues (Compton Place) and the dual Listed-placed Holley Shiftwell (Bahamian Bounty), and is the fifth foal of his dam Pesario (Bishop Of Cashel), who won twice and is a half-sister to the triple Gr.3 (then) Leicestershire Stakes winner and sire Warningford (Warning). Their dam Barford Lady (Stanford) also won twice and is a half-sister to the Listed Doncaster Stakes winner Ansellman (Absalom), while the third dam Grace Poole (Sallust) was Listed-placed and is a half-sister to Tim Ding (Celtic Ash), who was second in the Queen Alexandra Stakes at Royal Ascot.

Persario has a yearling colt by Poet’s Voice and a colt foal by Muhaarar.

Idaho (Galileo) was held up just behind the leading quartet. As Dartmouth (Dubawi) took over the lead, he began to make his challenge, taking the lead inside the final furlong and, though pressed in the dying strides by Barsanti (Champs Elysees), he kept on well to win his second Gr.2 race, having landed the Great Voltigeur last year and finished placed in both the Gr.1 Derby and the Gr.1 Irish Derby.

He is a full-brother to the multiple Gr.1 winner Highland Reel, who took the Gr.1 Prince of Wales’s Stakes on Wednesday, and a half-sister is the dual Australian Gr.1 runner-up Valdemoro (Encosta De Lago). They are out of the Gr.1 Australasian Oaks-third Hveger (Danehill), who is a full-sister to the Champion

his shoulders. He was dead straight and did his best always to be fair to both sides in any deal. It sounds like an odd combination, the traditional man in tweeds and a Swedish superstar, for example, but Lewis took it all in his stride. This style was perhaps of another world to the pushiness of today and, when the old-fashioned, comfy world of the BBA changed, as the agency went public to realise the value contained in it for the directors, he was not very happy about it, but he stayed on until retiring officially in 2001 from the floated company, continuing to manage his clients’ interests as a consultant, based in Letcombe Regis, near Wantage.

He was married to Itchy and they had two sons, Rupert, who followed him in to the army, and Rhydian, who was awarded the OBE the other day for his work in financial services. Funerary arrangements will be confirmed shortly.
