EBI LOCK FOR MAINLINE AND MASS TRANSIT
BOMBARDIER* EBI* Lock Computer-Based Interlocking systems supervise and control
wayside objects such as signals, point machines, balises and level crossing protection.
Through Bombardier’s collaboration with Swedish State
Railways, the first Computer-Based Interlocking (CBI)
system in the world went into operation in 1978. Now in its
fourth generation, our latest CBI technology uses the same
basic design-for-safety principles, proven and in use for
more than 35 years.
EBI Lock 950 CBI systems supervise and control wayside
objects such as signals, point machines and level crossing
protection. The systems receive the route setting
commands from the traffic control centre and then lock
the route ahead of the train and release it after the
train passes.
EBI Lock CBI systems form the heart of all BOMBARDIER*
CITYFLO* and INTERFLO* solutions, providing major
enhancements to capacity and flexibility and high availability
in comparison with conventional signalling standards.
Systems are comprised of an interlocking computer, a
stand-by back up computer, a transmission system and
centralised or distributed object controllers. The system
ensures maximum route availability and safety on the
rail network.
INTERFLO systems offer a range of main line solutions
which also support European Rail Traffic Management
System (ERTMS) technology. CITYFLO systems are
solutions for urban transit networks such as trams, light rail
vehicles and metros.
EBI Lock systems are as follows:• EBI Lock 400 in depots and stabling yards
• EBI Lock 500 deployed for secondary and industrial
line interlockings
• EBI Lock 600 for use in CITYFLO 550 mass transit
signalling solutions
• EBI Lock 950 most advanced and widely used CBI
system for mainline and mass transit

BENEFITS OF EBI LOCK RELIABILITY
• The interlocking computer and its hot standby backup computer ensure maximum system availability,
providing an economical and reliable railway solution.
• All EBI Lock systems are equipped with diagnostic and self-testing functions. Service technicians can
access the information via a service PC that helps them to locate any problems quickly and plan the
necessary maintenance.
• EBI Lock components can be serviced in the field without disturbing train traffic. The electronic
circuitry is mounted on circuit boards that can be replaced in minutes.
MODULAR DESIGN• Developed for the lowest possible life cycle costs, EBI Lock systems are very cost-effective to install
and maintain. Consisting of tried and tested modern modules they can be easily upgraded and
adapted to different customer requirements.
• A station equipped with an EBI Lock system can be completely controlled from a traffic management
centre or from a control desk. A combination of both these modes is also possible if required.
• The EBI Lock CBI system takes full control itself and automatically establishes train routes in
accordance with pre-programmed procedures.
• Automatic route setting can also be an advantage on small, remotely controlled stations with low
traffic levels.
FLEXIBILITY • With the most country-specific adaptations of any CBI system in the world, EBI Lock systems can be
customised to suit the various types of control systems, interlocking functions, wayside objects and
special functions of different rail administrations.
• Due to its high levels of compatibility and interoperability with diverse train equipment and
signalling systems, an EBI Lock system can be customised to suit specific or national requirements
in any rail network.
• Functions for Automatic Train Protection (ATP) and Automatic Train Operation (ATO) can also be
integrated into the systems.
• EBI Lock can be modified to interface with other types of computerised or all-relay interlocking systems.
• A single interlocking computer is capable of controlling several stations simultaneously and can also
control the lines between stations.
ERTMS• The EBI Lock system has been designed to cater for the enhanced interlocking function specified for
ERTMS/European Train Control Standard (ETCS).
• With balise driver boards in the object controller system, Eurobalises in ERTMS/ETCS Level 1 can be
controlled in a cost-efficient way.
• By simply adding an EBI Com Radio Block Centre (RBC), EBI Lock CBI systems can transmit and
receive information via radio for ERTMS/ETCS Level 2.

CENTRAL INTERLOCKING SYSTEM
The EBI Lock central interlocking system
collects information about the status of the various wayside objects, processes the
interlocking data and sends commands to the relevant object controllers.
Communication takes place via redundant high-speed
channels in which information can be sent in both
directions. All communication takes place via ethernet,
on dedicated or open networks.
Optimum availabilityTwo interlocking computers are used by each EBI Lock
system, one operates as an on-line computer and the other
as a hot standby. If a malfunction is detected by the on-line
computer, the computer in hot standby takes over, thereby
avoiding any interruption to the system availability.
Safety assuredCommands are received from the railway traffic control
centre. The system evaluates these commands with
respect to traffic safety rules and the actual traffic
situation. Only commands that can be completed safely
are ever executed.
When all the safety conditions are fulfilled, the interlocking
computer transmits orders to the object controllers which,
in turn, control the objects on the track-side. The object
controllers transmit the status of the track-side objects
back to the interlocking computer.
Safety is ensured using multiple approaches such as
diversified software, with independent system parts
supervising each other. The diversified software is
developed by two independent teams, strictly following
coding conventions. EBI Lock CBI systems operate at
CENELEC Safety Integrity Level 4.
Diversified programsEvery interlocking computer contains three
microprocessors. The two main microprocessors
(A & B) process (in parallel) diversified programs
for safety functions. These different programs have
identical functions and must achieve the same result
for a function to be executed. Any inconsistency in a
particular program is quickly detected when one
program does not produce the same result as the other.
The EBI Lock system then issues an alarm to traffic
management while transferring control to the
standby computer. The third processor (C) is used
for processing non-vital functions relating to servicing,
interfaces and transmission.
EBI Lock software is structured for flexible adaptation to a
rail administration’s signalling or operation rules. Once the
administration-specific rules have been adapted, EBI Lock
site-specific data can be prepared quickly if required.

Guaranteed transmissionHigh system availability and ongoing communication is
assured through the use of a redundant network. In case
of a broken cable, transmission is switched to the
alternative channel without impacting upon functionality.
All telegrams are marked with the time of transmission.
The receiver can therefore check the validity of the
information or order.
Object controllersEBI Lock object controllers are fully electronic and are
connected directly to wayside objects. Every object
controller can control several objects and can be
positioned centrally together with the computer, or
distributed close to the objects. With direct control,
the power supply can be regulated to the controlled
object which causes minimum wear and reduces the
need for maintenance. With distributed object controllers
cabling is kept to a minimum, a cost-effective benefit
that also reduces the risk of induced currents causing
signal interference.
Flexible expansionThe EBI Lock interlocking computer has the capacity to
control and supervise a large number of wayside objects.
If more objects need to be controlled a number of EBI
Lock systems can be linked modularly to achieve the
necessary capacity.
Housing conceptThe housing concept contains all the equipment required
to run the object controllers in standard pre-wired racks
and facilitates installation. The compact design is based on
proven, well-defined and tested components from carefully
selected quality suppliers and is CENELEC compliant,
ensuring operator safety.

EBI TOOL DESIGN AND MAINTENANCE
EBI Tool is a comprehensive, user-friendly
software package. Designed to allow EBI Lock interlocking systems to be engineered,
installed, commissioned and maintained by signal engineers.
EBI Tool allows the interlocking systems to be installed
very quickly as they are thoroughly planned and tested
in a computer environment before commissioning.
Speeds, distances, train routes and other traffic requirements
are put into the system which links selected objects in
accordance with the applicable interlocking rules.
CommissioningThe commissioning of Bombardier interlocking systems
is accelerated by thorough testing off-site. The modular
housing concept is supplied with all the equipment pre-
wired, this makes it possible to test all the equipment while
it is still at the factory. All that is then required on-site is an
assessment of the cables and wiring.
Extension and modificationThe EBI Tool package can also be used to re-programme
existing interlocking systems. When a station is expanded,
the existing EBI Lock CBIs can easily be updated to
manage the increased geographical coverage. When the
verification is performed, the backup computers are loaded
with the new data generated by EBI Tool, and can then
assume control during the period when the interlocking
computer is updated. With an efficient reloading process,
this can be done during normal operation.
Maintenance and Diagnostic CentreThe EBI Tool Maintenance and Diagnostic Centre (MDC)
is a modern infrastructure management, maintenance
and diagnostic system that can remotely monitor EBI
Lock CBIs. The system collects, analyses and presents
performance and diagnostic event and alarm data from
all signalling subsystems.
EBI Tool MDC combines performance and event
information with asset and health status in a single system.
It links existing network sub-operating systems together,
enhancing system interaction and data transfer, thereby
providing an integrated infrastructure management system.
