BERWICKSHIRE’S ESSENTIAL COMMUNITY TRANSPORT This summer BAVS were fortunate enough to have Freja Raiker with us for

two weeks whilst she carried out her school work placement. Freja spent

did get the opportunity to spend the day with a Berwickshire Wheels client

and below is a report on how her day went:

Berwickshire Wheels is a service that provides transportation to both

disabled and able-bodied users, taking them to appointments, group

meetings, on shopping trips, sightseeing outings, or on visits to family and

friends.

I went for a trip with Philip ( a carer for one of our service users), and Finlay, a

wheelchair user who uses Berwickshire Wheels on a regular basis, so that I

could see how this service is users and the impact it has on people’s lives.

Finlay is in his 20s and suffers from motor neurone disease. Finlay has been

using Berwickshire Wheels since August 2012, and uses the service on a

regular basis. Without Berwickshire Wheels, Finlay would be stuck indoors.

The minibus we had was quite large and had plenty of space in the back for a

COMMUNITY EMPOWERMENT ACT BAVS is delighted to note that the Community Empowerment Bill was passed by the Scottish Parliament on 17 June, 2015, and following the granting of Royal Assent, will become law! The Community Empowerment Act represents a powerful statement of intent by the Scottish Government about a re-balancing of power, and BAVS looks forward to encouraging and supporting the use of the provisions within the Act. Each part of the Bill will be brought into force separately, once the relevant regulations and guidance are in place. BAVS hopes to contribute to the development of these, particularly in relation to asset transfer, community right to buy and participation requests. Over the coming months our Third Sector Partnership (BAVS, The Bridge, The Social Enterprise Chamber and Volunteer Centre Borders) will be running a number of events focussing on the community ownership aspects of the Community Empowerment Act - look out for further information. New Member of Staff—Kerry Hague, Part-time Shop Manager, Coldstream

I have recently joined Susan Taylor in managing the BAVS Coldstream shop following her decision to reduce her hours, so we now job share the role. I have a history of working in the voluntary sector and within Local Authority care settings - most recently as a Service Manager for Sheffield City Council. Following a decision to change our lifestyle in preparation for my Husband leaving the Army at the end of 2016, we “up sticks’ and moved to Coldstream from Nottingham in Nov 2013. Since moving to the area I have strived to remain in employment that kept me within my local community rather than continue with a commuting/working lifestyle so with that in mind I have been keeping myself busy by working at a local coffee lounge, volunteering at the BAVS shop, being a volunteer befriender for Seton Care and supporting an older gentleman to live independently in Kelso. I look forward to have an increased involvement in the
