WELCOME TO THE FURLONGS FESTIVAL OF 2019! Once again the Residents Association of Sutton-on-Sea is able to welcome you to this
event that’s now so firmly fixed in our yearly calendar. Last year’ s Festival was so well
attended & so action packed that our Committee took the decision to expand it.
So with the much appreciated support of Sutton Rovers we are this year using the whole
extent of the playing fields. This land was given to our community as part of the recognition
of the concern King George V had for our country’s young people …so many of whom had
died during the war that overshadowed the early years of his reign. The national body now
overseeing this legacy very much encourages such communal activity as this celebration.
It takes place due to the enormous effort & imagination of a great team whom I list below.
They gave me firm instructions this year to “leave it to them” to organize… & it has been
good to be able to sink into a back pew, never tempted to become a back seat driver,
I trust you will be as thrilled as I am at the results of this team’s enthusiasm & planning.
Our expanding work has been matched by an expanding membership. If you would like in
any way to join in our efforts please contact us, either at the Festival Info Gazebo or by
ringing Leila on the phone number below.
Yours, trusting you will enjoy all this year’s Festival has in store for us,

FURLONGS FESTIVAL:
THE ENTERTAINMENT… At the west end of the Arena:
Adrian Graham’s
GIANT ALDABRA TORTOISES
Adrian got his first tortoise when he was about
four, having started asking his parents for a
pet, such as a dog. But he was allergic to all
animals with fur, hair & feathers, so he ended
up with his first tortoise which grew big as did
Adrian’s collection. He insists they are not a
circus but a display he only takes along “to a
few well organised events” where they certainly
become a star attraction.
It was here in Sutton-on-Sea they raced for the
first time… surprising us with both their speed
& cunning. So once again we are giving
punters the opportunity to put a pound on the
tortoise they guess will win!
