President’s Message:Okay, I am going to attempt to get ahead of this.  On Sunday January 25 nineteen club members participated in a great drive and lunch arranged by Eric.  It was a beautiful day and Eric did a terrific job.  I took the Pininfarina Azzurra (aka Fiat Spider) and it ran beautifully down to the restaurant in Southport.  When I came out of the restaurant it was morto (for non-Italians that means it was sleeping with the fishes).  I suspected the alternator but a short push and clutch release got it started and off we went.  Well, several miles later the spark of life again left it.  We had a little impromptu coffee klatch without the coffee with the Burrs, Finns, Moores and Williamson’s at an empty lot while waiting for triple A to arrive with a golden chariot for my dead steed.  While waiting we had the time to verify that my three month old alternator had indeed apparently electrocuted itself.  A great deal of sympathy between all the British car drivers was not in evidence and trash talk abounded.; my solace in knowing with full confidence that I will one day meet them sitting forlornly on the side of the road in their little British car. BMCCF - MinutesTemptations, a.k.a. the BMCCF Club House

January 15th, 2015

Meeting was called to order at 7:00 by President Steve Donatone.

40 car enthusiasts were present for the meeting, skyrocketing from the 39 who have attended the last two meetings. Keep that enthusiasm up!. The minutes of the November meeting were approved by acclimation.

Steve acknowledged Charlie Schaefer (our own Sparky) for once again taking up tools and almost committing bodily harm. This time it was an ax to his toe. Charlie sported a very stylish boot but was in good spirits. Charlie – please be careful.

Car ShowThe 2015 BMCCF car show is September 26th at Wrightsville Beach Park. Steve asked that club members register as early as possible to give the committee maximum amount of time to prepare for the crowds.

Eric Robertson then informed the group that his car show committees are in place with the exception of Goody Bags and Media. Anyone interested in heading up one of these committees please get in touch with Eric as soon as possible. Eric reminded the committee chairs that they should be lining up support for their area of responsibility.

WebsiteThe web site is again able to be accessed. Lynn Wilson has volunteered to be the webmaster (that is a gender neutral term) but Lynn needs passwords/locations/etc. from Christin before Lynn can access. The members thanked Lynn for taking this on. The way the website is set up, there is no charge for having this website.

FinancialSteve reminded those present that with the dawning of new year comes payment of the annual dues. The dues are still a very reasonable $25 and should be paid to Caryl Finn who was present at the meeting and eager to get your money. Steve asked for a show of hands of those who had paid and while many hands were raised there were some who had not yet paid. Steve asked those present to see Caryl and pay those dues.

John Moore gave the Treasurers report. The 2014 car show netted $1800 and contributions to various charities were made from that money. In 2014, the membership costs – including $350 for insurance, nametags, activities and contributions – were $2360 in effect “making” $470. We had fewer activities in 2014 and there was no website charge in 2014. Some members pre-paid in 2014 for the 2015 dues. The balance is approximately $7100. This is healthy and includes a $6,000 contingency reserve as voted by the Board of Directors.

Activities:

Steve stated that the Holiday party was a hit and there are several future social events including the chili cook-off. Steve asked John Foster to provide some specifics. The Chili Cook-off is Friday, Feb. 13th (no, in my humble opinion this does not count as a Valentine’s Day special dinner!) at the SeaPath Yacht Club Clubhouse in Wrightsville Beach. You can set up your delicacies beginning at 5:30. Tasting starts at 6:00 and voting begins at 6:30. There will be appetizers, chili, gumbo/chowder and desserts. Please bring the beverage of your choice. The club will provide paper products. Let John Foster know what you are bringing so his team can allocate enough space, paper products, etc. The Rusty Bumpers will play a short set.

Carl Wilson spoke about his hosting a “kick-off the year” party at Autoworks on Saturday, Feb. 7th from 2 – 4:30 PM. RSVP to Carl - that means let Carl know you are coming. Bring a chair and an appetizer/dessert if you like. There will be door prizes and fun for all including slot car racing.

Due to expected inclement weather, Eric has cancelled the lunch drive to the Purple Onion in Shallotte. Eric will re-schedule and let folks know via email.

Eric explained that members of the activities committee – Donna Schaefer, Karen Burr, Susan Roberson and Beth Foster – are working on a week end getaway for later this year. Any ideas? Contact one of these folks. More to follow on this.

Eric also reminded the membership that if anyone has an idea about an event, let him know. The person suggesting the event will organize that event and Eric and his team will publish the details.

Finally, Eric mentioned that last year after a meeting the group watched a video ”Magnificent Machines”. Eric will talk with the Temptations folks to see if we can do that again.

Steve said he will plan for some Saturday morning breakfast meetings. These are well received and allow for members who cannot make the evening meetings to participate. Look for any updates as to date/time/place of future meetings.

By lawsSteve said that after two months and numerous reminders, the vote to amend the by-laws is 53 yes/4 nos. The motion passes. Any questions about the details, contact Steve. Steve will work on the text to post on the website and will ask Charlie to publish in the newsletter.

Wrap upSteve asked for any new business. Eric said someone lent him a photo album but Eric can’t remember who it was. To the owner of the photo album: contact Eric.

Moss Motors will have their first annual car show on June 6th in Petersburg, VA. For more information contact Mickey Finn.

Steve adjourned the meeting at 7:25 PM

Respectfully submitted; Pam McMahon

This year the British Car Club - Midlands Centre will be hosting the 9th annual Carolina British Classics Car Show, otherwise known as CBC-IX, on Saturday March 28th, 2015. Please help us get the word out about this event by forwarding this e-mail to your members and posting it on your event calendar. Our show this year celebrates the Carolina Area Austin Healey Club. We will again be merging our event with the popular Tartan Day South Festival at the Columbia Speedway, a historic “vintage” track from the early days of NASCAR racing. Registration for the show this year is $30 by March 15 and $35 after. There is no additional charge for passengers and your registration fee includes entry to the Festival. New this year for all preregistrations, the driver and passenger will receive free admission to the Friday evening concert at the speedway where we are also planning a reception at our show tent. There will be many interesting and entertaining diversions throughout the day and a variety of merchandise and food vendors. As always this is a charity event with a portion of the proceeds going to Palmetto Lifeline, a premier no kill animal shelter located on Bower Parkway in Columbia. The show's web page is http://www.bccmc.com/CBC-IX.html. We looking forward to seeing you at the show!

The Busted Knuckle Returns:By John Foster - Part 1

Since acquiring a 1971 Triumph TR-6 (that had set unused for a number of years after a "small" ft. end collision) from fellow BMCCF member Gil David, the general plan is to get the car running to access the condition of the engine, etc. before addressing the body work.

Some of the items accomplished are:

Drained/removed/flushed radiator & hoses.Drained engine oil (pretty black) & replaced canister style oil filter.Removed/drained gas tank (old fuel was really STINKING).Blew out fuel supply lines, cleaned mech. fuel pump internal filter, removed/cleaned carb. float bowls, etc.Cleaned corroded ignition points & re-set gap, cleaned scale from inside distributor cap/rotor contacts.Sent clutch slave cylinder to Apple Hydraulics for brass sleeving the bore and re-build.Cleaned all battery power & ground cables & attachment points.Drained/re-filled Trans. oil, topped off differential & rear shocks.Greased front end/drive-shaft & rear axles.Removed spark plugs & sprayed WD-40 into cylinders.

THE YEAR IS 1914The year is 1914 --- One hundred years ago. What a difference a century

makes! Here are some statistics for the Year 1914:************ ********* ************

The average life expectancy for men was 47 years.Fuel for this car was sold in drug stores only.Only 14 percent of the homes had a bathtub.Only 8 percent of the homes had a telephone. There were only 8,000 cars and only 144 miles of paved roads. The maximum speed limit in most cities was 10 mph.The tallest structure in the world was the Eiffel Tower .The average US wage in 1910 was 22 cents per hour. The average US worker made between $200 and $400 per year ...A competent accountant could expect to earn $2000 per year,A dentist $2,500 per year, a veterinarian between $1,500 and $4,000 per year, and a mechanical engineer about $5,000 per year.More than 95 percent of all births took place at home ..Ninety percent of all Doctors had NO COLLEGE EDUCATION!Instead, they attended so-called medical schools, many of whichwere condemned in the press AND the government as "substandard."Sugar cost four cents a pound.Eggs were fourteen cents a dozen.Coffee was fifteen cents a pound. Most women only washed their hair once a month, and used Borax or egg yolksfor shampoo.Canada passed a law that prohibited poor people from entering into their countryfor any reason.

The Five leading causes of death were:1. Pneumonia and influenza2. Tuberculosis3. Diarrhea4. Heart disease5. Stroke

The American flag had 45 stars...The population of Las Vegas , Nevada , was only 30!!!Crossword puzzles, canned beer, and iced tea hadn't been invented yet. There was neither a Mother's Day nor a Father's Day.Two out of every 10 adults couldn't read or write and only 6 percent

of all Americans had graduated from high school.Marijuana, heroin, and morphine were all available over the counterat the local corner drugstores.Back then pharmacists said, "Heroin clears the complexion, givesgives buoyancy to themind, Regulates the stomach and bowels, and is, in fact, a perfect guardian of health!"(Shocking?)

Eighteen percent of households had at least one full-time servant or domestic help...There were about 230 reported murders in the ENTIRE U.S.A. !I am now going to forward this to someone else without typing it myself. From there, it will be sent to others all over the WORLD - all in a matter of seconds!

Try to imagine what it may be like in another 100 years.

Scary!!!

Will  this  be  the  LiNle  Bri2sh  Motor  Car  of  the  Future

My  guess  is  WE  will  never  know!Oh  Well  ...

Five car hobby predictions for 2015

By Kurt Ernst - Hemmings Daily

In January of 2014, I fired up the incense burner, cast some chicken bones, read a few tea leaves and gazed into a crystal ball to come up with a series of car hobby predictions for the coming year. A few turned out to be right on the money, while others weren’t even close; as a futurist, my career would be short-lived, but as a weatherman, I’d be atop my game.  With 2015 now spread out before us, it’s time once again to hammer out five car hobby predictions for the coming year.1) Prices for air-cooled Porsches (with the possible exception of the 914)

will rise significantly over the next 12 months. In terms of price growth, air-cooled Porsche 911 and 912 models have become the new Ferraris. Like their Italian rivals, prices have gone nowhere but up in recent years, and this trend may well accelerate as the economy recovers and the auction market remains relatively hot. Don’t expect a Porsche model (even the 917) to approach the $35 million price point of Ferrari’s revered 250 GTO anytime soon, but if you’re in the market for a Porsche 912 (or even a 911 SC), there’s no time like the present to buy.

2) Japanese cars will continue to gain respect, and interest, at auction. A few decades back, almost no one considered Japanese cars collectable, but prices for high-end Japanese sports cars have grown considerably in recent years. Toyota 2000GT models now routinely sell in the

20

Page 21: Eats Starts @ 6 PM BMCCF3rd Thursday of each month unless otherwise posted. BMCCF Meeting February 19th Temptations Eats Starts @ 6 PM Meeting Starts @ 7PM BMCCF The Cape Fear British

million-dollar range, with Mazda Cosmo models trading hands for a quarter-million dollars. A two-door “Hakosuka” Nissan Skyline GT-R sold for $242,000 last summer, and that car was never even sold on these shores. As prices for these uber-desirable models grow, look for a trickle-down effect to occur on more pedestrian models, such as the Datsun 510 sedan and unmolested examples of third-generation (FD) Mazda RX-7s. Overall, I expect to see a much larger Japanese car presence at auction in 2015.

3) The automotive industry will continue to be plagued by recalls. As consumers get more litigious, and as cars grow ever more complex, automakers will be forced to err on the side of caution when it comes to safety defects, and recalls will continue to plague manufacturers. While 2014 will go down as the year of GM’s ignition switch recall, or the Takata airbag recall, 2015 will very likely see similar recall-related scandals aplenty. Components need to meet certain specifications to be chosen by automakers, but they must also prove to be cost-effective.

4) Look for postwar cars to capture more wins on the concours d’elegance circuit. Last year’s Pebble Beach Best in Show win by a 1954 Ferrari 375 MM Scaglietti coupe was no fluke, but a sign that the winds of concours glory may be shifting away from prewar cars. Blame it on a changing demographic, which (potentially) sees cars built after World War II as both more interesting and more relevant. Will this have an impact on pricing of pre-war cars? Eventually, but probably not in 2015.5) Don’t expect big growth or a big decline in the auction market. From

2012 to 2013, revenue growth in the top-ten cars sold at auction rose by over 63-percent, while from 2013 to 2014, this growth was a more sustainable eight percent. Barring any major changes to world financial markets, expect a similar performance in 2015, and I’ll go out on a limb by predicting the top-10 sales at auction in 2015 will total $165 million, a growth of just over eight percent.

Only time will tell

Wrightsville Beach makes list of ‘World’s 20 Best Surf Towns’

January 10, 2015 By Port City Daily

Wrightsville Beach has been named by National Geographic as one of the top 20 surf towns in the world.

The magazine’s website includes Wrightsville Beach among 20 destinations “picked not necessarily because they are home to the best waves, but because the sum of their parts makes them inviting for locals and visitors alike,” as stated on the site.

Wrightsville Beach is one of seven U.S. destinations on the list, the others located in Hawaii, California and New York. The rest of the list consists of destinations in 13 other countries, including Australia, Brazil, Japan and South Africa.

The list includes recommendations for places to eat, stay and play in each location. Wrightsville Beach’s listing includes a description that states: “The whole family can enjoy Wrightsville’s trademark mix of sleepy southern beach town and growing metropolis. Think catfish with caviar or barbecue with Beaujolais.”

The listing recommends surfing between August and October, when the weather offers “consistently above-average surf.” It also describes Wrightsville as “a hotbed of stand-up paddleboarding” and notes several companies providing opportunities to do so.

Other locations on the list include: Byron Bay, Australia; Florianopolis, Brazil; Tofino, B.C., Canada; Nosara, Costa Rica; Biarritz, France; Bukit Peninsula, Bali, Indonesia; Bundoran, Ireland; Shonan, Japan; Taghazout, Morocco; Raglan, New Zealand; Muizenberg, South Africa; San Sebastian, Spain; La Paloma, Uruguay; and in the U.S.: Encinitas, California; Santa Cruz, California; New Smyrna Beach, Florida; Hanalei, Kauai, Hawaii; Paia, Maui, Hawaii; and Montauk, New York.
