life to Christ, he began studying and working to helpothers.

He’s had a few “mysterious things” happen to him, too, in which he sees God’s hand.

For example, Skinner was once at a gas station whena woman drove in, came up to him and gave him a“stern message” about how he had to change his life.“You’re not a stranger to God,” the stranger told himbefore she drove off without buying any gas.

Ministry worksToday Skinner has finished a training course through

New Directions, a local prison ministry, and spends agood chunk of his time volunteering there.

He writes pen pal letters to prisoners all over theUnited States and dreams of one day starting a Chris-tian reentry home for recently released inmates.

He now has a stable family life with his wife, Dani-elle, and two young sons and has made the Eaton Rap-ids Wesleyan Church his home.

“I’m at the most peace I’ve ever been in my life,” hesaid.

New Directions, Inc., now in rented space at MountHope Church in Delta Township, casts a wide net. Its di-rector, Pastor Len Hill, trains outreach volunteers whovisit prisons and jails to counsel inmates, somethingSkinner would also like to do someday.

There are 160 volunteers on Hill’s mailing list, andthese dedicated folks travel to the Eaton, Ingham andLivingston County jails, as well as to 20 state prisons,

including ones in Coldwater, Jackson, Ann Arbor andMuskegon and keep track of the number of people theycontact each week. That figure averages around 860souls.

They also ship Bibles and Christian books and DVDsall over the U.S., 25,000 pounds of them last year alone.

Reaching outHill began prison ministry in 1984, becoming the direc-

tor of the local program in 1992, around the time heretired from General Motors.

“It’s been a marvelous adventure,” Hill said, of thelast 25 years, adding that he feels God’s presence when-ever he meets incarcerated people.

New Directions also works with teens in youth facili-ties and helps the children of incarcerated parents goto the Youth Haven Camp in Rives Junction in the sum-mer.

The ministry also makes sure they have gifts underthe tree at Christmas.

“In 2009 we gave 125 children gifts and sent 15 tocamp,” Hill said.

Local resident Shawnee Collet’s family is one ofthose camp families.

Collet, who is raising five sons, ages 10 to 18, as asingle parent, says she’d recommend the camp experi-ence to anyone.

“It helped get them out of the neighborhood andhelped with anger issues,” she said. “All the boys reallyliked it.”

One of her sons, 17-year-old L’Don Napier is a seniorat Sexton High School with college on the agenda fornext year.

He says he liked the camp zipline and dodgeballgames, but especially the “cool counselors” who madeit a “comfortable” place.

New Directions has a small stipend from the church, but exists mostly on donations. Anyone who would liketo contribute to its work, are asked to contact Hill at319-5741, ext. 12.

Support for local DI teams is encouragedEaton Rapids’ Destination Imagination teams are our

“community assets.”On March 5, 48 students from Eaton Rapids Public

Schools took part in the Regional Tournament for Desti-nation Imagination.

There were nine teams present.Teams ranged from 3rd grade to seniors. For some, it was a first time experience, for others,

they have spent more than half of their educational yearsinvolved with DI.

All this is made possible by the parents who volun-teer their time to be managers, appraisers, or coordina-tors.

They do this because they care about the educationalexperiences of our kids in Eaton Rapids.

Because of their grant writing, we have found finan-cial support over the years from the Eaton Rapids Pub-lic School Education Foundation and a first-year grantfrom DART Corporation.

Because of the generosity of those involved, we haveallowed students a chance for creativity and to buildteam skills.

In giving recognition, we must not forget to mentionthe true wonders of this program — the students.

They allow us to see new possibilities with unendingenthusiasm.

We ask that you take time out of your busy scheduleto thank any member involved by coming to Holt High

Letter to the editor

School on Saturday, April 16 for the State DI tournamentwhere six of our nine teams will compete.

Bond vote happenedfor a good reason

While I agree with a re-cent letter to the editor that itis a sad state of affairs whenless than a quarter of theparents vote in an electionthat involves their children’sschool, I applaud those thatvoted the recent school bond

down. I received mailings, automated phone calls andreminders at school func-tions — all urging me to votefor the bond measure.

What I did not hear washow this money was goingto help educate my children.Iheard about new buses, newcomputers, new expensivelearning programs, securitycameras for a parking lot,

an updated auditorium, andmore money for athletics. While none of these thingsare bad, none of them arenecessary either.

Our kids don’t need state-of-the-art computer systemsand nice new athletic facili-ties.

They need a world classeducation so they can com-pete with the rest of the

world and win.In the Feb. 27 edition, sev-

eral members of the schoolboard felt they needed to bet-ter understand why we vot-ed no and how to change theno to a yes.

For me, spend money toeducate my children. Thatwill change my vote to yes.
