Veterans honored

On Nov.11 in the South Eaton Cemetery in Eaton Township, a very special tribute was paid toveterans of all wars. The program was put together by Eagle Scout candidate Nathan Dolmanof Charlotte. The program honored all veterans but also served to dedicate the new Veteran’sMemorial that Dolman created as a permanent tribute to the 26 veterans in the South EatonCemetery, many of whom served in the civil war. Mr. Dolman purchased and erected the monumentand memorial garden as part of his Eagle Scout project for Charlotte Troop # 37. He raised over$1,700 to fund the monument and memorial garden. The monument and garden was placed in theSouth Eaton Cemetery in late October and dedicated in a ceremony on Nov. 11. Over 80 attendeeshonored our veterans at the ceremony that included the VFW Honor Guard and speakers from theAmerican Legion Post 42, National Guard, Sons of the Civil War Veterans, and Congressman-ElectTim Walberg. The invocation and closing prayer was issued by Pastor Mangan of Mount HopeChurch. arms raised.Other entries, though, are sculptured

works of art made of materials most adultswould never connect with turkeys. A jointeffort by fifth graders Jasmine Johnson andCheyanne Davis, for instance, uses an oldred sock for the turkey’s wattles.

Fourth grader Cameron Peters construct-ed his turkey mostly from colorful autumnleaves. And fourth grader Brooke Gibbskept to a feather theme.

Except many of her turkey’s feathers arebright pink. Food service staff have to becreative folks themselves, figuring out how

to slip some extra spinach into the salad tomake it healthier, for instance. The turkeycontest was an idea to make the mid-daymeal more fun.

Who knows? A pink feathered turkeymight just spark a conversation betweenkids who haven’t had the chance to knoweach other very well - yet.

“It was something to get the kids excit-ed about coming to eat lunch,” said foodservice director Linda Vainner. “It’s amaz-ing how creative they are.”

Turkey contests aren’t the only thing upVainner’s sleeve. It seems there was anoth-er contest last December - this one withreindeer.

Turkeys: Kids make some art

It seems this dedicated woman, who hasno first hour class this year, has already re-ceived a lifetime achievement award for hergenerosity over the years.

The top winner was the Cindi Penski’sAP English class, whose members broughtin 384 items.

Some of the high school items will soonfind their way into food baskets put togeth-er at Heart and Hands, according to Inter-act Club advisor Stacey Surato.

“I’m proud we got everybody to kick inand work, especially since we started outslow,” said Interact treasurer Ryan Rich-mond. “We really got the number up as highas those in the past.”

Heart and Hands director Roz Bullen, who has seen an October uptick in the num-

ber of people needing assistance, says thegiving goes both ways.

“It (the food drive) gives the students agood experience helping other people,” shesaid.

Making sure everyone has enough foodisn’t just the prerogative of high school stu-dents. Middle school kids recently collectedalmost 1,200 pounds of food as part of thisyear’s Michigan Harvest Gathering, half thetotal amount collected, according to ERMSsecretary Sue Shaw.

The Harvest Gathering effort was coor-dinated by Leslie Neubecker, the dieticianat the Eaton Rapids Medical Center.

Second and third graders at Northwest-ern Elementary also worked hard in thatfood drive.

It seems you’re never too young to givethanks.

In late October, we had three high school teachers takea caravan of students on a college visit.

Jamy Marske, Ryan Anderson, and Dori Ike took33 students up to CentralMichigan University (CMU)to introduce them to col-lege. These students havehad their ups and downs inhigh school.

Our students were greet-ed by Dr. Hernandez as wellas seven CMU students whovolunteered their time to putpresentations together and walk with our teachers and stu-dents throughout the day.

Our students found out about financial aid, and admis-sions, as well as resources available to them in the library.

And they sat in on a classroom lecture by a college pro-fessor. They also toured different departments throughoutthe day to find out more about majors and minors offeredin college. Our teachers brought seven juniors on a returnvisit. They were able to meet with college advisors andprofessors in fields that they are interested.

Mr. Marske took one junior (Amber) to the honors col-lege where a CMU honors student who received the cen-tralis scholarship met up with the two of them. Amberwas taken to the honors college to meet with an advisor tofind out what it takes to get into the honors program. Am-ber also had a meeting with a professor in the Departmentof Health and Human Resources, who helped her plan outcourses she would need to take to become a Physician as-sistant. Mr. Andersonm took (Annatasia) to meet withadvisors in the area of Fashion design. Annatasia really en-joyed the meeting with the advisors and walked away with

a CD about the entire program.Mr. Marske also took (Kaitlyn and Samantha) to the

ROTC building on campus where they learned more aboutthe program from a CMU student who is currently in it.They now know what to do to get into the program andhow it will help them pay for college.

The feedback from our students who went on the tripwas very positive. So far we have taken about 90 at-riskstudents to CMU over the last year and a half. We are hop-ing to do another trip to CMU in April.

I wanted to thank Dr. Hernandez for his efforts and hos-pitality. I also wanted to thank Dori Ike for organizing thisfor ERPS. She has been a big proponent of our studentsexpanding their horizons.

My family and I were eat-ing dinner in a restaurant afew nights ago, and whenthe tab came, I noticed astatement printed in boldletters, which said, “SaveThe Music Foundation.”

Upon further reading, Ilearned the foundation hasas its goal, the maintenanceof music in the schools. Thebill was soliciting a dona-tion, which could be addedto the restaurant tab, andwould show the revised to-tal for record-keeping pur-poses.

This unobtrusive, but ef-fective way of supporting theschools, is not only unique, but very creative. Whatbetter asset could be found

than a donation to one of themost vulnerable subjects inschool curriculums today?

While the music founda-tion may produce significantdollars, it also exemplifiesthe effort and the willing-ness to support an asset ofthis caliber.

he creativity of solicitingassistance from restaurantcustomers is not only inno-vative, but illustrates anoth-er asset- building endeavor.

There are scores of waysthat motivated individualscan support and sustain ev-er-improving schools.

It is clear that adult in-volvement is necessary ifwe are to continue to buildbetter and better academicsystems. What better wayto give this support, thanto add a dollar or two tothe total when you receive arestaurant check of this na-ture.

It is imperative that we,as adults, get behind and be-come a part of the educa-tion of our young people. Tostand on the sidelines, andexpect that teachers, alone, can raise the competencylevel of our youth, is falla-

cious.A community, rich in con-

structive parental support, isa community that is “aheadof the game.” The musicfoundation is simply an ex-ample of directed supportthat can be found in anycommunity at any time.

Asset building is a never-ending undertaking. It be-gins with the will and desireto make something better, and to enhance the city inwhich we live. Successwill always be a cooperativeachievement.

that it has been long over-looked. EATON RAPIDS - Despitethe rigors of playing both highschool soccer and runningcross country, Greyhoundsophomore Kenny Wherrycontinued to get stronger asthe fall sports season woreon. Wherry turned in respect-able times on the 5K crosscountry trails at the start ofthe cross country season, fin-ishing fourth at Springportwith a 17:11.

But throughout the sea-son Wherry continued toshave seconds off his time.He was sixth at the GreaterLansing Cross County Invita-tional with a 16:23 followedby a second-place finish atthe final league jamboree ofthe season with a 16:20, allwhile playing soccer for ateam that was batting to winits first district championshipin 12 years.

And like the soccer team, which saved its best for thelast of the season, Wherry hit

his stride at the state crosscountry meet. He finished15th with a time of 15:57 andwalked away from the Mich-igan International Speedwaywith all-state honors.

He also made his goals forthe season.

“I really wanted to go tostates, get a top 15 and final-ly break 16 minutes,” Wherrysaid.

This was Wherry’s firstyear running cross country, making his all-state per-formance even moreimpressive. Because of com-mitments to soccer, Wherrymissed three races during theregular season. Three timesduring the season Wherry fin-ished a 5K run, then changedinto his soccer uniform andheaded off to a game.

“He’s a special athlete whowants to do as many thingsas he can, and do all of themwell,” Eaton Rapids crosscountry coach Rick Smithsaid. “He’s a very diligent per-son who works very hard tobe successful at whatever he

does.”Smith said it was easy to

have Wherry as a dual-sportathlete with commitments toboth soccer and cross coun-try. “He always communicat-ed with me, he was in myclassroom and we would talkabout what was on his sched-ule for soccer, and he wouldrun whenever he could,”Smith said.

Wherry, who was the onlyEaton Rapids boy to qualifyfor the state meet, knew hehad to keep with the frontrunners.

“I tried to not get caughtin the middle of the pack, be-cause once that happens youget kind of screwed over,”he said. “But I didn’t want toburn everything early on.”

Wherry kept pace withthe top runners, avoiding get-ting bogged down among the249 Division 2 harriers.

“He analyzes races,”Smith said. “He doesn’t getas much time on the courseas others, so he makes surehe knows who he is running

against and where they’llbe.”

Wherry also showed hisclassroom skills, earning ac-ademic all-state honors witha 3.87 GPA.

With soccer and crosscountry over, Wherry planson joining the swim team tostay in shape for the springtrack season. He made hismark with the Greyhoundtrack team last spring as adistance runner. He’s set alofty goal of running a 4:15 inthe 1,600-meters and makingthe state meet. His long-termgoal is to break the four-min-ute barrier.

He looks to repeat as across country runner anda midfielder on the soccerteam next fall.

“It’s pretty tiring, I defi-nitely didn’t think it woulddo that much to my body, butI always came home reallytired,” he said. “I’m glad I didboth of them, I think we cango way further in soccer andI think I can get much fasterfor cross.”

Wherry earns cross country all-state honorsBILL [email protected]

CHARLOTTE — The hol-iday season is almost here.As many of you can imag-ine, this year may be a toughtime of year for many of thefamilies that Housing Servic-es for Eaton County (HSEC)serves.

Families that are enrolledin the Extended ServicesProgram at HSEC are transi-tioning into permanent hous-ing after being homeless. They are trying to get their

lives safe and secure onceagain.

At the same time, theywould love to get their chil-dren something nice for theholiday.

Most of them are strug-gling to keep the basic neces-sities, so finding the moneyneeded to do a little some-thing for their family is diffi-cult.

To assist these families,HSEC is requesting assis-

tance from social groups, businesses, or individuals inthe area that would like to“adopt a family” for the hol-iday season.

If your family, office, orchurch group is interestedin adopting a family, or youwould like to learn more, contact Danielle Sheldon at(517) 541-1180 [email protected].
