Consistent efficiency throughout UPS load rangeManyUPSscitegreaterthan90%efficiencywithoutmentionoflowornoloadrange.Today’saveragesystemoperatesatonly55%ofitsratedloadorcapac-ityrange.However,efficiencyisusuallyreducedinthislower-loadoperatingstatus—notsowiththe9390,whichreachesoptimalefficiencyratesatlessthanhalfload—andmaintainsthisoptimalefficiencythrough-outtheloadrange!

Low input current THD enhances generator compatibilityElectronicdevicesandUPSsarebuiltwithsomecomponentsthatarenon-linear.Whenvoltageisappliedtoacircuitconstructedofnon-linearcomponents,thecircuitmaynotrespondlinearly(currentmaynotfollowthevolt-ageinalinearmanner).Thesecomponentsmayevencreatefrequenciesotherthanthefun-damentalappliedfrequency(60Hz).

Thesefrequencies(harmonics)occurinoddmultipliesof 60Hz.Thedegreeofoccurrenceiscalledtotalharmonicdistor-tion(THD).Ifthepowersourcecan’trespondtoallfrequenciesdemandedbythecircuit,thenfurtherdistortionoftheappliedvoltagemayoccur—creatingmorecomplication.EveryUPSproducesalevelofharmon-ics.Unchecked,harmonicscanreduceoverallpowerfactor,causesensitivedevicestomal-function,prematurelyageequip-ment,andcausescreensanddisplaystoflicker.

Toavoidthesenegativeeffects,the9390usesaspecialinputcircuitthatkeepscurrentTHDatlessthan4.5%atfullload—withoutcompromisingefficien-cy.Asaresult,the9390trans-fersmaximumpowerbetweenthesourceandprotectedloadandisexceptionallycompatiblewithmultiplepowersources,especiallyauxiliarygenerators.InthePowerPerformancechartonthepreviouspage,notethatmostmanufacturersrequireaninputfiltertominimizeTHD.ThisaddedfilterresultsinlowerefficiencyfortheUPS—acon-sequencenotgenerallynotedinmarketingmaterials.
