How is food stored in the space shuttle?

Fresh foodOn short trips that only last a few days astronauts can have fresh food and vegetables.

Just add water.

Freeze driedFreeze dried food is quickly frozen then all the water is sucked out of it. When you want to eat it you add water.

Heat treatedThe food is heat treated. It is heated really hot to kill all the germs. Then it is cooled down and put into packages

In the space kitchenA space shuttle has a kitchen with hot and cold water it also has an oven.

Just add water and heat!You have to add water to powdered or freeze-dried food. It takes 20-30 minutes to add water and to cook the meal.

No washing up!

The cold and hot water is not for washing-up it is done with special wipes.

How do astronauts eat?

GravityThere is no gravity in the space shuttle so everything floats. Astronauts use a toehold to stop floating away while they eat.

Gravity

They use forks and spoons, but the food has to be moist enough to stick together.Velcro is used to hold bowls, trays and cutlery in place.

Food is served on a tray. Magnets, springs and Velcro hold the cutlery and food packets to the tray.

DrinksDrinks are kept in pouches with built in straws.
