Cod & Lobster Brasserie >>

Page 19: Eat Drink Nelson 2016

nz wine varietiesreislingComes in many styles, from bone dry to medium and to sweet dessert wines. A hardy vine best suited to the cool, dry climate of the South Island, especially Nelson.

sauvignon blancDry crisp wine – tropical fruit flavours and a crisp, clean finish. This grape thrives in warmer, dry regions, namely Marlborough and Nelson.

chardonnayDry white wine with full fruit flavours. A grape primarily grown in warmer regions, though grown successfully in Central Otago. Very often fermented in oak barrels (barrique), which gives the wine its toasty oak flavours.

gewürztraminerThe grape itself is Traminer, “Gewürtz” is the German name for spice. This medium dry wine shows spicy characteristics with a lychee aroma. Very suitable for spicy Asian and Eastern cuisine.

pinot grisAn outstanding Chardonnay substitute, weighty and deep flavoured. Belongs to the Pinot family of wines. Pinot Gris produces good wine; dry, full flavoured and flinty.

viognier(Pronounced “VEE-oh-nee-aye”). Has full, spicy flavours somewhat reminiscent of the Muscat grape. Viognier wine can vary from almost Riesling-like character to almost Chardonnay character, depending on production method, but is not noted for ageing ability and is best drunk while young.

cabernet sauvignonMedium/full bodied red wine with integrated berry and oak flavours. Grown in the warmer climate regions of NZ.

pinot noirThe graceful ‘lady’ of red wines boasts a complex array of aromas and flavours. Though traditionally grown in the Martinborough region, Nelson produces some very remarkable wines in this variety.

merlotProduces fruity, early drinking wines with low tannin and acid. Often blended with Cabernet Sauvignon.

melbecCalled a rustic version of Merlot. It is mouthfilling and vaguely reminiscent of blackberries in youth, but soft and low in acid.

shiraz / syrahSyrah and Shiraz may be one and the same grape variety, but there are definite differences. Grown in NZ, France and California, where it produces typically earthy, spicy wines, this classic red variety is called Syrah. Grown in Australia and South Africa, is a bolder more fruit driven wine, which is called a Shiraz.

Over the hill from the Ruby Coast lies Tasman, peppered with farmlets, vineyards, olive groves, and boutique art and craft studios.

Mapua this seaside village, once a thriving horticultural port is a destination in itself offering an irresistible blend of art, wines, dining and adventure experiences.

Next stop Motueka, located in the heart of hop, horticulture and fishing country. Unwind at a café and try some retail therapy.

Further along the bay is the Ruby Coast, a spectacular picnic spot with sea views back to Nelson.

It is here that our Creative Pathway journey swings to the South to the Moutere Hills. The rise of the hills leading in to the Moutere signal the nearby Kahurangi National Park, New Zealand’s second largest national park with many day walks and tracks to explore.

Continue Nelson’s Creative Pathway through Lower Moutere farmlands and beyond to the vineyards. The wineries are well sign posted. Some offer café style dining, others invite you to bring a picnic & enjoy the outdoors.

Take a lazy drive through prime agricultural and horticultural land with the spectacular Richmond Ranges in the distance. The Waimea West turn-off leads to Brightwater & Wakefield, two of the earliest rural pakeha settlements and near Ernest, Lord Rutherford's birthplace.
